What award did you win Marcus? ![]() |

Be sure to check out the Swing-O-scope! Generously donated by a couple of lovely ladies with uncommon vision. Let them know you appreciate the hard work they did so we can get another one for August. Follow the link below! Swing-O-Scope |

A slight shortage of follows, alas. Marcus, what award did you win? Hmmm. This purple paper is fascinating! ![]() |

Margi's class We were going to meet at the Lima Bar and Grill before coming to the Rocket, but it has closed. It was a real treat hearing the Bob Gordon Trio play there on Tuesday nights. Next time Gabe! The outside of Portuguese (is that how you spell it?) Hall. ![]() |

This was a sad sight. ![]() |

If someone can hire the Bobby Gordon trio to play the Rocket, I'm there! |

Meeshi and I want to bring live music to the Firehouse, but there have been complaints regarding the noise levels. We are working on it. Bobby Gordon is high on the list. We have also talked to Randy of Air Mail Special about a quartet playing also. So how do you really feel about it Britt? |
| |
I've already spoken to Bobby about booking his band to play for us at the Rocket. He'd love to. In fact, I tried to book him for the 25th of this month, but one of his guys was busy... Should I shoot for the 15th of next month? (My next open band night) |

August 15th? That conflicts with the Eddie Reed Big Band at the Crazy Horse. Damn! |

Did Lima actually close for good? Wow, if so, it's just another casualty among the restaurants and bars that have supported swing music. The first I remember was Johnny M's, then Harmony on Fifth, Papa Jacks, and the Marriott bumped the Saturday night thing to early Sunday evening. I think there's a bunch more that closed that I've failed to mention. It's nice having the Rocket, Break Away and Firehouse to depend on in that they're sponsored by dancers for dancers. |

How about the Supper Club a Go Go. That's where I first saw Johnny, Jeff, Meeshi and Margaret dancing and decided I needed to try Lindy Hop. |

Oh yeah!!! Supper Club a Go Go, sort of a more casual Harmony on Fifth. Yep, it went under too. I heard, though, that it was because one of the co-owners was on cocaine or something and "borrowed" a little extra for entertainment purposes. I hated that tile floor anyway. Harmony on 5th had a small dance floor, too. Papa Jacks was always too sticky from all the alcohol that never got cleaned up properly. (Although it was buttery smooth and velvety when Jenna Ferguson and I tried it out for the 1st time before it opened.) My favorite dance floor is the new and improved "Rocket". Portuguese Hall is so nice. The lights are on a rehostat and can be dimmed, as anyone who stayed from 11-12pm knows, and the CD player works perfectly. It should be moved up to the stage so excited dancers on that nice sprung wood floor don't make the CD player skip. For those of you who noticed that the sound system was distorted somewhat, when I arrived at 10:30 I noticed it too and just reduced the "gain" on the mixer. The signal from the CD player was too "hot" going into the mixing board and was creating a distorted signal. Easy to fix and it sounded perfect thereafter! I should probably have posted all the Rocket stuff under "The Rocket", duh, but I'm in a hurry. I love you all! God bless us everyone, even Dennis and Reuben, Amen. Jeff |

And the Sunday night at the Marriott is now dead, too, right? |

I just got off of the phone with Bobby Gordon. We've booked his trio for the 22nd of August!!! It will be a great show. I'm really happy they're all free that night to play for us dancers. Just so you all know, bands love playing for us. We're a great crowd and musicians like being appreciated for what they do. Remember to let the bands know when you enjoy their music. Also, Margie and I are working on a knockout line-up for the next three months. So stay posted for exciting bands to come. To-date calendar at www.Rocketswingclub.com -- check it out!! |

Great work Jim! Look forward to hearing them. |

Peggy Claire's performance at the Rocket should be great too. I've excerpted the following from an email she sent me: -------------------------------------- I've got a dream band for the Rocket. There's me, Pat Danna on guitar, Ben May on bass, Ben's favorite drummer Denny Dennis on drums, saxophonist/clarinetist Rod Cradit and the world's most famous classic jazz trombonist Dan Barrett on bone, trumpet, coronet and flugelhorn. Dan has played 3 times at Carnegie Hall: with Woody Herman, pianist Joe Buskin and in a tribute to Louis Armstrong. He played lead trombone and was a featured soloist in Benny Goodman's band. He has four recordings as a leader on Arbors Jazz records, which is the top classic swing jazz label today, and in fact, is their music director. He is in great demand as an arranger and is featured on probably hundreds of CDs recorded by classic jazz giants all over the world. He simply has no competition as a trombonist. IMHO he is as good as anyone in his genre on trumpet, etc. too! The music is going to be orgasmic--for ME at least. I think y'all will like it too! -------------------------------------- I don't know if that's enough to entice Reuben to come down - but let's hope not J. So where have you been Andy? |
