Members (left to right): Carl Sonny Leyland (piano, vocals), Katie Cavera (guitar, vocals), Hal Smith (drums, leader), Anita Thomas (reeds, vocals), and Mike Earls (string bass) About Hal's Angels When Anita Thomas met Katie Cavera, a musical partnership quickly resulted. Next, Katie put together a jam session with Anita and invited bandleader Hal Smith to play. Following the session the three participants immediately decided to organize a band. Coincidentally, a job offer in Arizona materialized at the same time and "Hal's Angels" became a working trio. The trio expanded to a quintet with the addition of pianist Carl Sonny Leyland and bassist Mike Earls. The Angels play "Southwestern Swing"--Louis Armstrong to Count Basie; Joe Williams to Bob Wills. Anita, Katie and Sonny are featured vocalists. They sing up a storm! When Sonny plays boogie woogie and the blues, crowds always shout for "more!" We are happy to Hal's Angels make their San Diego debut right at our very own Aubergine nightclub this Sunday, June 15th! Oh yes, $10 cover for the dance. $8 advance tickets available at the Firehouse and Cafe Savoy. This week's Cafe Savoy DJ: Tip West of LA's Swing Pit! |
| |
So, 1. Mike isn't coming too? 2. Is the band boogie? or dixie - cause I especially like the cheese in the photo. |
| |
How was the Aubergine last night? |
| |
Last night was especially fun for the few follows that were there (it was a bit lead-heavy early in the evening). The band played some nostalgic pop-swing like Jump-Jive-n-Wale, and a couple of strange medleys comprise of "old brown jug", "In the Mood" and others I can't recall. |
| |
"few follows"?? It was lead heaven....all my favorite follows were there, and I didn't even get to dance with them all (ahem aletha) |
| |
It seemed like each time I thought they couldn't possibly play another Glen Miller song, they did. |
| |
I got there late, say 11ish or so, having just returned from Catalina. I really enjoyed my hour there. The band wasn't "my cup of tea", but the follows there more than made up for what I prefer musically. I had great dances with Amy Johnson, Deidra, Shayna, Christina, Katie Strand (who had not been out in like a year), and many others. So good to see Shesha down this way, as well as Nick Williams from LA. Great pic of Mike and Tip. I saw them both in Catalina. You shoud have heard Tip, at the "El Galeon" karaoke bar on Saturday night before the after dance, singing Guns and Roses "Paradise City", with a definite AC/DC spin on it. Wild stuff. |
| |
To answer Amy's questions: 1) Mike's isn't coming (someone has to stay in LA to run the Swing Pit), but Holly should be accompanying Tip. 2) According to their website, the band claims to specialize in "Kansas City Jazz, Lowdown Blues, and Southwestern Swing", so think early Basie, Jay McShann, Mary Lou Williams and Lester Young. Or think of the "Kansas City" movie soundtrack, but trimmed down for a quintet. Not dixie, a little Basie-ish Boogie, and a lot of 30's Kansas City Swing. Hope that helps. |
| |
Peter Loggins and Jonathan Stout both say that Hal Smith is a god, and even I know how good Carl Sonny Leyland is. This band is going to be awesome. |
| |
I am certainly coming again. I had a great time last week. This band HAS to be really good with those players. If the singer is as good as the players I'm bringing them up to OC. Hope everybody will make it out Sunday! |
| |
Of course if Carl sings it's a hit. |
| |
I'm bummer I'm going to miss this, but HJDF... |
| |
wanna trade? |
| |
whoohoo I'm bringing Lacey with for the lesson - David you better be there!!! |
| |
Last night was rad, the band was all that I expected and more. You could really feel how much fun the musicians had playing together, and playing for the dancers. You know, these guys play in so many other bands, but you can tell by the way they interacted on stage that this is their "playing for fun" band. I can't wait to have them back at the Aubergine in August. (Sorry, guys, I tried to get them for July, but the band members had prior scheduled engagements.) |
| |
Hal's Angels were great! I would have been soooo disappointed if they hadn't lived up to all the hype but they sounded even better in person than the demo clips I've heard. It would be cool if we could have them play once a month - oui? |
| |
Great band Meeshi. I had a good time... you know the music is probably good if Krista bothers to show up, hehe. Now if only we can get the band to play a little more Hot music. |
| |
I liked them, too. And congrats to David, and to Deidra, who won the Jack and Jill contests! |
| |
Wish David & Diedra good luck for the finals of the Southwest Swingoff in LA on Saturday night @ Satin Ballroom..... Sun night was just the prelims. |
