starBy popular request, we are having some great traditional swing music at the Aubergine this Sunday, July 13th. Famed drummer, Hal Smith, has assembled a ALL-STAR trio of his favorite authentic jazz musicians chosen specifically to play for Aubergine dancers, thus the name, The Aubergine All-Stars! You won't want to miss this dancer's band, as they will play everything from Basie to Bechet. $8 Cover. Here's the line-up:

***THE AUBERGINE ALL-STARS***
Hal Smith -- Drums, Leader
Carl "Sonny" Leland -- Piano, Vocals
Anita Thomas -- Clarinet, Sax, Vocals

HAL SMITH (drums, leader) has made over 150 recordings; performed with the Dukes of Dixieland, Jim Cullum's Jazz Band, Summit Reunion, Lawson-Haggart Jazz Band, Climax Jazz Band, Grand Dominion Jazz Band, South Frisco Jazz Band, Marty Grosz and led the critically-acclaimed "Roadrunners."

CARL SONNY LEYLAND (piano, vocals) has worked with Gremoli, Bobby Gordon, George Probert, Roger Jamieson's New Orleanians, Chris Kelly's Black & White Jazz Band, Big Sandy & the Flyright Boys (western swing) and the blues band Blue Largo.

ANITA THOMAS (reeds, vocals) has performed with the James Morrison Big Band, led her own Quintet and played in musicals including "42nd Street" and has also made guest appearances with the Golden Eagle Jazz Band, Firehouse Stompers, Bobby Gordon Sextet and others. When Grammy award winner Diana Krall heard Anita with the Clayton-Hamilton Big Band, she described Anita's performance as "awesome."

Wow! That sounds like it's worth getting a baby-sitter for. What's the dance floor like and how much are beers????? I showed David this post and he was impressed with Sonny and the rest. Wow, we may just make it out dancing two days in a row. But, I think if we have to choose, we're gonna have to give this a go around!

The dance floor can be a little sticky in places (spilled alcohol from the surrounding carpet) but otherwise it's nice, and plenty big enough. Beers, including draft beers, are $3.

How was the Aubergine last night?

It was great! I think Carl is unbelievable. He sings well and plays
like few can. I was amazed by Anita. She's so good on sax and
clarinet and also has such a nice voice. I think Hal and the band
had a lot of fun. About 80 people. Nick and Kelly showed up, and
so did Giselle and Jay (I think that's his name, good dancer). Jeremy
taught the lesson and DJ'd the breaks. Lots of folks, including me,
practiced bal and it seemed like everyone was having a good time.

(Sorry if your question was just meant for Tammy...oh, yeah, Tammy
and David did show up too. They made LBtB and Aubergine. Nice
to see them out again.)

The band was totally awesome. Down sides included that they didn't turn on the air until the place was a sweatbox. Also, my DJing sucked. I was exhausted before I even showed up.

Hello! The place was cool. We may try to make it again. You were right, The floor was beyond sticky, it was disgusting and one corner of the room smelled like cat pee. But, hey, I had a fantastic time. I seriously came home with blisters on my feet.

I'm so amazed at how good everyone has gotten. I didn't have one bad dance! All the leads I danced with were great. Thank you! Meeshi, of course, danced me off my feet, literally. I think by the end of the second song of dancing with him, he was just dragging me around the floor.

It sure was great to see everyone too. Hell, David even danced with other people. (amazing). He was amazed at how good everyone is too. Well, maybe it's just that we're so bad now, hee hee hee.

It was killer to see Giselle, too. It makes me feel a little old thinking about how she was just a little teeny-bopper when we met her... Time flies

Hope to see you all again soon!

Tammy

Hey, what's it like at Aubergine when there isn't a band? Who are the people at the door? What was with the sign about a "Dance Contest" when we walked in. Am I halucinating?

RE: Ian, to answer your question, not really, until I am faced with what seems like a former life, if that makes sense.

Hi Tam,

Miss the old Flame class days!

Hi, Who's this? I miss the Flame too. We would have kept it up, but the baby-sitter cost just wasn't worth it. Well, and David's Navy Career got in the way too.

I remember some days I would get home from work and really not want to do the Flame, but by the end of the night I was in such a good mood. It was a great little group of regulars that came.

I would sure like to get my hands on the video Darlene made. We can't remember any moves anymore and we made so many up.

Oops, I digress, this is suppose to be about Aubergine! So, Anyone...what's it like on a DJ night?

Luke from Salt Lake and my sister are in town. They'll be at the Aubergine this Sunday, so come on out and dance with them.
