Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander is a septet dedicated to preserving the classic and often overlooked small group swing from the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Founded by two dedicated swing dancers and vintage lifestyle enthusiasts, and using only the best of LA’s jazz community, the Campus Five was a way to expose many dancers and listeners alike to some of the more interesting and under appreciated tunes from the swing era, while still being one of the most danceable bands playing swing today. Picking tunes from the books of notable small groups as the Benny Goodman Sextet, Count Basie’s Kansas City Six/Seven, Artie Shaw and his Gramercy Five, as well as Lester Young, Django Reinhardt, Illinois Jacquet, Duke Ellington, and Coleman Hawkins, and featuring vocal numbers from Ella Mae Morse, Anita O’Day, and the young Ella Fitzgerald. |

You got Steve Lucky!!! for those who haven't seen them before, you have to go! |
| |
Wowee! What a great line-up. I can't even remember the last time I saw Steve Lucky. Remember when they played at Buffalo Joe's, Ian? Those were the days... |
| |
I don't know how you can afford to do this, Meeshi, but thank you so much for promoting live swing music in San Diego! great lineup! |
| |
I remember Steve Lucky at Buffalo Joe's! Does Carmen still play guitar and sing? I think she called herself "Carmen Gettit". |
| |
Whoa - Steve Lucky! Those shows at Buffalo Joe's were awesome. |
| |
I don't remember Steve Lucky...You Old Timers! But I do know Campus Five and the David Patrone Quintet. They put on a good show. And I will not miss Hal's Angels again! Great lineup Meeshi! |
| |
Carmen Getit is still with Steve Lucky. |
| |
Well, you can thank David Patrone for booking Steve Lucky, he did all the leg work. And, Ron, as for affording these bands, we've had to do a lot of negotiating to make ends meet (Steve Lucky is still going to cost an arm and a leg). But I figure, the owners of the Aubergine could kick us out at anytime, so we may as well go for it and get some good bands to play there while we can. |
| |
I sure hope this awesome lineup prompts more regulars to come out on Sundays. I know it's a hard day, but it would suck so much to lose this venue. |
| |
Yeah, I remember that night at Buffalo Joe's too. When was that, '97 or '98? Everyone was there including Johnny Lloyd(now living in Switzerland) and Peter Loggins and Alicia Milo from LA. That was an epic night! Wasn't their Harmony on 5th gig the last time they were in San Diego? I remember we give Carmen Getit an awesome birthday dance. That was a great time too! Last summer I was fortunate enough to see them again up in Seattle on the eve of that city's swing exchange. Let me tell you, they can still bring it! |
| |
I saw Steve Lucky at a mall in downtown LA on my lunchbreak several years ago. Exactly how old are you, CHance?? |
| |
Yeah, thank goodness for all the newbies that have been coming out lately. They're the ones keeping our scene alive right now. Could it be a sign of a resurgent interest in swing dancing? Or is it just because it's summer? |
| |
I saw Steve Lucky in Berkley during the LA/SF Challenge in March. |
| |
What's up with the Henry DeMichele's Trio Italiano? And who cares about Steve Lucky...we want Carmen Getit! ![]() |
| |
From their website: "Henry DeMichele's Trio Italiano is a group of ex-mafia jazz musicians whose unique experience in the mob give them an unusual edge on the stage. While Royal Crown Revue may have coined the term 'gangster bop,' none of the members of that band have ever beaten a person with a baseball bat or tossed someone off of a bridge with 'cement shoes.' Dedicated musicians, the Trio Italiano are currently in the Federal Witness Protection Program, but this will not interfere with their performance. They have played for such noted personages as President George W. Bush, Bill Gates, and Gary Coleman. Don't miss the soulful swing of the Trio Italiano." |
| |
Oh my gosh.....link please Jeremy! |
| |
In order to protect their identity, the band doesn't want to have their website made public. |
| |
"Thank goodness for the newbies" is right. There does seem to be lots of new interest in swing at the moment. I know the regulars need to go to LA to get their Lindy on, but I wish there's was more of a committment with SD dancers to build locally than indulge elsewhere. I hope there's a good turnout for LBtB on Saturday and the Aubergine on Sunday. Lots of experienced dancers will be at Camp Hollywood so I guess we'll just see. |
| |
There's a reason we chose to indulge elsewhere. |
| |
Indulge away. |
| |
Hey, I have logistical questions in regards to Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums. With Street Scene happening that weekend, will it have an effect on the turnout for the Aubergine? If Sunday is supposed to be a short program, when will it end? Is the Aubergine inside or outside the boundary for Street Scene? I'm afraid our drive to downtown will be hindered by large crowds and tons of traffic that night. I guess we'll have to ask ourselves, "Am I a hardcore lindy supporter in this town?" or "Is it really worth all the trouble?" |
| |
It's worth it! Good questions though! I didn't even know about Street Scene. I do know that LBtB won't be affected by it. |
| |
And, Ian, I TOTALLY understand. We all need to indulge once in a while. Camp Hollywood is one of the best weekends of dancing anywhere in the country, and it's close enough to always be affordable for San Diegans. And Lindy by the Bay was packed and wasn't affected at all by dancers in SD making the trip up there. You all were missed, for sure, but we still had a great crowd. Melissa Varriano and Jim Cruzen Dj'd. Good stuff. |
| |
Dude, Gene...after seeing Steve in Seattle..I'd take the train down there if I have to!!! Camp Hollywood rocked my world...(or er maybe it was the continuous supply of liquor and cute boys/great leads....) www.lindyshowdown.com is so gonna kick bigger butts and I don't know I'm ready yet - 1.5 wks!!!! I seriously caught lindy fever again! |
