Hey, does anyone remember the details of Liz O'Grady's fantastic announcement at the Firehouse last night?

She mentioned that a generous anonymous benefactor of the San Diego swing dance community was hiring George Gee and JJ&W for a FREE concert for San Diegans. Donations for a charity (can't remember the name) would be accepted in lieu of admission.

I believe it was to be June 5 (Monday) at Champion Ballroom? Can anyone confirm details?

Let's welcome George Gee back with a show in force! He is one of the few national bands that still plays for the dancers.

Remember this past fall when he played at the Rocket? Remember how after the Gestapo--oops, I mean, police--closed the concert down, George offered to come back the next night and play for free? You gotta love George and his band for his show of generosity. Not to mention that his Basie-influenced arrangements straight out swing!

So if you can't catch him at Catalina or at 3rd Street, you have absolutely no excuse not to catch him right in our own backyard.

See you on the George Gee-driven dance floor!

HopMichael

Liz O'Grady did. Its a birthday party for her and her wealthy student, Irv. You have to call her to reserve your spot, because she wants Lindy Hoppers to have the first dibs. But her voice mail is filling up too quickly, she said. But there's 250 spots, so I really don't think there will a problem with getting a spot. How many did we get at the George Gee event that you promoted, Shawn? I don't think it was 250...

Incidentally, I will be DJing that night in between band breaks. I hope that doesn't scare anyone off.

On the Monday night of the "failed" GG night, there were about 300 people there. The next night we had about 220 people.

Is anyone going up to Catalina after the George Gee show (either Monday night or Tuesday) who could give a ride to two dancers from Seattle?

Heard and danced to GG & JJ&W at Catalina this past Friday. Still great late Basie swinging sound.

Put on your dancing shoes and let's go dancing tonight!

See everyone at the concert this evening!

That was a fantastic night. To get that high energy band to play in a space where everybody has room to dance is incredible!

Thank you Liz!

They played some great stuff and I had some great dances. But I was a bit disappointed with some of their songs, particularly in the beginning of the third set. Bizarro rhythm changes, etc. But still, a good night! Its great to dance to a live band..

The JJW band is more into soloist-style jazz,
and dare I say it, bop. Thus the drummer cuts
up time like nobody's business, and they rely
on the bassist to lay down four.

I wish PBDA had sprung for the full big band.

For people like myself, who have a hard time dancing to a nice solid beat, George Gee is the best.
Their drummer loves to change the tempo throughout many of their songs, and their organ player just loves those memorable 60's organ sounds.

I spoke with George Gee last nite, nice guy, and asked I him about his musical interests in regards to Jazz from the 30's, since 30's Jazz was responsible for Lindy Hop, and he responded that he finds the music from the 30s simplistic for his taste. He said he prefers jazz with 4 beats to the bar. (??)

I take back what I said about the JJW.
At 3rd street the soloists were cutting
loose with modern jazz solos, but at
Catalina they were swinging. No bop
there. Oh yeah, I totally recommend
the Swinging Live CD they put out (frankie's
85th birthday bash). They play an instrumental
version of 720 In the Books that cooks.
