the Rocket was pretty empty last nite but it was actually kinda cool... some people that don't normally ask me to dance, or that i don't get around to asking, were there and it was a nice change to dance w/ them w/ so much room to dance in.

it's funny how attendance fluctuates so much there as of late...it can be totally packed on tuesday and then completely empty the next. i've always liked the place - lots of room to dance, a nice floor, a quaint little stage... a dance hall w/ a little history...

hope to see more of you there next week!

Upcoming DJ schedule:
2/15 - Ron
2/22 - Chris
2/29 - Kathleen
3/7 - Dennis
3/14 - Ron
3/21 - Chris
3/28 - Kathleen

Kathleen is a newer dancer to the scene, and has been helping Mickey DJ before 9:30 pm or so when the regular DJ starts. Now Mickey wants her as a regular DJ, so wish her luck. We now have a variety of DJs playing a variety of music at the Rocket, which was Mickey's goal.

Anything going on at the Rocket this Friday?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Reuben Brown on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 03:24 pm: Edit

Also... I noted that there were only 140 votes cast after the battle. So, I'm curious, does anyone know what the total attendance was that night?

Lisa, who covers the front door said 115-120 paid. So the rest of the people came in after 11:00 pm (when others were covering the door), and got chips then. Assuming there was no cheating. I think only a few people didn't vote, having arrived too late and saying they shouldn't vote because they weren't there long enough, like Meeshi.

Hey guys,
Just so you know, Rocket now opens @ 9pm.
Additionally, in an attempt to support what we hope will be a growing swing community, we are trying to gear the first hour of music towards tempos manageable for beginners. Hope to see you all out there!
keep swingin'
jim

Music was very danceable. Of course some of the better dancers came in later, as usual. Guess about 30-40 people which gave everybody plenty of room to try things.

Quick question for anyone who knows:

Who's DJing tonight at the Rocket?

Dear Lindy Hoppers,

Opening and operating a Swing Club here in San Diego takes alot of love and hard work, and of course, money. Few are willing to risk their own money, but Mickey Raml did just that when he bought "The Rocket Club" from Alan many months ago for the sole purpose of maintaining the best "swing-thing" we had going here in San Diego. He never wanted anything more than to break even and watch us smile.

As the sole proprietor and risk taker of "The Rocket Club" he's taken alot of hits from all sides, financially and otherwise. He's absorbed the expenses of the rent of Vasa Hall, DJ equipment and DJ's, sound equipment, a website and hotline, city permits, security and door personnel at Vasa Hall, and an honor-system snack bar with drinks, etc. In addition, he endured the management "style" of the owners of Vasa Hall from within and, at times, some criticism from the dance community without. Being new at this, he knew he'd make a few mistakes along the way, but always adapted quickly to the desires of us in the dance community to make Vasa Hall a great place to come dance.

Last week, some of his equipment was stolen from Vasa Hall. He lost 2 expensive PA system speakers and a refrigerator that he had purchased from the owners of Vasa Hall so that we'd continue to have cold drinks while dancing.

In consideration of the above, please support "The Rocket Club" at Vasa Hall this Tuesday, April 11th, and let Mickey know that we appreciate the risk he's taken and the effort he's expended. To assist him in recovering his losses from the recent theft of his equipment, we'll be "passing the hat" and taking up a collection to help reimburse him. (Unfortunately He did not have insurance). Please think about this before you come and give as generously as you are able.

Thanks,
Michelle Cancel

PS. If you are interested in taking up a collection at your event, please let me know and I would be happy to bring our collection container over.

Jeez! Its one thing after another for that guy! Tough luck for Mickey. Those two extra speakers made a great difference in the sound quality there. Which isn't great at Vasa anyway. The speakers in the rear really help balance the sound in the hall.

I can't believe they took the refrigerator!

I don't know what he's going to do to protect himself from further losses there, its a great hassle to have to bring in the equipment every Tuesday.

I'll definitely chip in a donation to help him cover his losses.

Just in case anyone is confused..................
THE ROCKET WILL BE OPEN TONIGHT AS USUAL. Several people noticed the "For Sale" sign out front and have asked me if The Rocket was closed. It's NOT!

Just wanted everyone to have the right information. The question came up because of the "For Sale" sign out front. They are trying to sell the building but for now we will still be swingin' 'till midnight on Tuesdays. Jim Cruzen will be DJing tonight with Ron Bloom spinnin' tunes next week. So come on out and support San Diego's oldest all age swing venue. It's definitely one of the better dance floors around and should be made good use of while we have it. See you there!

What's the asking price for the building? Any info?

Someone told me $500,000!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By HopMichael on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 - 08:35 pm: Edit

Let's see:

at $5 a head, 50-100 dancers a night, it would take 1,000-2,000 nights or roughly 3-6 years of every night dancing for us to buy Vasa Hall.

Hmmm....!

=)

Half a Mil for that dump... in that neighborhood?

And I know it has termites also. More realistically, financing all of it at 7.5% over 15yrs means $4600 in monthly payments. At $5 a head, 920 dancers a month, or just over 100 at each bi-weekly dance. I think we can pull it off!

Michael - you don't mind borrowing the money for us, do you?

Don't forget to budget for insurance, security, maintenance, utilities, and much needed sound system and ventilation up-grades. You'd better add $1000.00 or so onto that monthly income requirement.
You know if we could get several people together to invest & manage, AND get the price down to a realistic amount, it might actually be worth looking into.

Not it!

Funny thing, Shawn. I was thinking of putting up similar figures for a mortgage scale. Didn't have the calculator on me though. Thanks for doing the calculations.

So we can choose to outright buy Vasa Hall

OR

we can support the bar! =)
