| Free Rocket Club Swing Party - New Location | 43 | 06/28 04:19pm |
| |
Hey, the Rocket was the place to see some early Swing Break attendees showing up to dance: Chris from Oklahoma had to fight off a line of follows asking him to dance. I heard wonderful comments from follows about his lead, so follows look for him this coming weekend! A couple from Boston was also there: Henry and (ack! I forgot her name!). They'll be here through Saturday. It's going to be a great week of dancing with out-of-town dancers!! So ask a traveling dancer to a 3 minute dance and make them feel at home here in San Diego! |
| |
Yeah, that was fun last night. And the substitute sound system was OK, thanks to Jeff. |
| |
One more thing: Jim Cruzen was DJing and did an awesome job. Way to go Jim! I heard his stuff on Sunday at the Marriott and if you keep playing that sound, I'll have to make Sunday a night at the Marriott! Kudos to Jeff Eldridge for bringing the speakers! |
| |
Yeah, Jim was very good! He played a lot of stuff I like to play plus lots of other good stuff. He says his tastes are closest to Meeshis. And that's just fine by me. |

Hello All! My name is Jessy. I am at school near L.A. but am from the Bay Area. I will be in San Diego next Friday, the 21st, and am looking for a jumpin' venue with advanced lindy hoppers. Is Vasa Hall an option then? I was there last year and really enjoyed it! It sounds like it has become a hot topic in the SD swing scene. Any suggestions will be extremely appreciated :) THANX! -jessy (Remember me Michael? The red-head from the Paladium shows!) |
| |
Jessy, or should I call you Jester? Welcome back to San Diego! Of course, I remember you. How long will you be in town for? If it's just for the weekend here would be my rec's: Thursday: By far, the Firehouse. Meeshi and Ron keep the crowd grooving to blues/jazz dance songs. Friday: Cafe Savoy [if it's open =( ] o/w Tio Leo's maybe having something Saturday: Break Away up in Encinitas. I believe Emily Belt is teaching follow styling points. Great floor and good dancing. Sunday: La Jolla Marriott Characters bar. Not as big as it was on Saturday nights, but good dancers have been showing up of late. Tuesdays: the Rocket. A lot quieter than its hey-day that you may remember, but still the hard-core hoppers come to dance. Any one else on rec's? |
| |
I spoke w/ Mickey last night at Champion and he lead me to believe that The Rocket won't be happening this Tuesday. I was wondering if this is true? It's Luis' last night in town, and a lot of people were going to be there to say good bye. |
| |
Mickey's contact information is at www.rocketswingclub.com.... |
| |
Hi Chris...actually there must have been a misunderstanding. I just spoke with Mickey and one of the owners of Vasa Hall to clarify your question myself. THE ROCKET WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE ON TUESDAYS AT VASA HALL . When there is any new info you will find it posted here. Mickey or I will make sure you are all notified of any changes. So be sure to come out in force for Luis Romero's last night before he moves. I know many of us are tired from the exchange this weekend but together we'll keep the energy going. See you there!!!! |
| |
Come on out tonight to the Rocket. I'll be DJing. I've got some great stuff to play and would love to play it to a full house. I think I'll play more songs from my recent compilations of swing songs about sex and swing songs about food. Sort of a 9 1/2 weeks theme, I guess you would say. Don't miss the farewell jam for Luis! |
| |
Well, I was planning on going to the Rocket for Luis' last night in town anyways. But your plan to play sex and food songs is an added bonus! Valorie |
| |
Hey Michael, thanks for listing the Break Away dance that I'll be teaching at. To clarify the lesson - it is for leads and follows. It is a lead and follow styling class with emphasis on how to show off the follow. Charlie Yi will be teaching with me. It will be a lot of fun, so please come one, come all and spread the word. Thank you! -Emily |
| |
When I called the farewell jam for Luis, he ran behind the DJ booth and changed his t-shirt, to the screams of the crowd. He danced to two songs, Lavay Smith's "Honey Pie" and Bill Haley's "See You Later Alligator". All the women will be so sad to see him go. It was a good night. About 13 of us went out to Dennys afterwards, too... You know, Margaret and Jim have pretty much taken over the running of the Rocket and are doing a fine job. It takes a bit of work to set up and break down all the equipment, and Jim brings it home every night to safeguard it. |
| |
does anyone have mickey's address or will he be showing up to the Rocket anymore? Mel & I have a card that we want to give him for helping us out with sound during the weekend... |
| |
The Rocket is on as usual at Vasa Hall this Tuesday night...so come on out and dance at one of the LAST FEW TUESDAYS at Vasa Hall. DJ music provided by Chris Bowling. DOORS OPEN AT 9PM! As most of you know Vasa Hall is up for sale and we will be moving The Rocket to a "new and improved" location. Check this out! If all goes well we will be spending our hot summer days dancing on a SPACIOUS, NEWLY REFINISHED DANCE FLOOR in a BEAUTIFUL, AIR CONDITIONED HALL WITH GREAT ACOUSTICS, not to mention a spacious parking lot with plenty of great places to eat nearby. Hope to have the details worked out soon!. Keep checking here for details later this week. |

Hi all, I am posting this reminder in two places to make sure I don't miss anyone! This Tuesday at the Rocket @ Vasa Hall we will be celebrating JIM CRUZEN'S 21ST BIRTHDAY. Hope you can all come out and share some lindy love with him. There will be cake, cold drinks, smiles, laughter, hugs, DJ music by Ron Bloom plus a great birthday jam.(Follows get ready!) Hope you can all make it! |
| |
This is for money? |
| |
The Rocket is usually $5, I think. Starts at 9:00 pm. Jim is our local god-like Lindy dancer, just turning 21, finally! |
| |
God-like??? |
| |
my way of saying that he is very very good... way above me, that's for sure. |
| |
In that case were all God-like :) |
| |
Local??? |
| |
Jim is defenetly the GOD-LIKE figure of the San Diego lindy scene. |
| |
AKA, "Jimmy the Moocher", is not a God. |
| |
Jim??? |
| |
Happy Birthday, Jim! And congratulations on the occasion of your graduation! By the way, what was your major? Lindy Hop? =) |
| |
defenetly??? |
| |
Oh, hey Moosey, in case you were wondering.... Two and a half hours in court, 271 dollars, no traffic school allowed, and 1 mph short of having to visit the coroner. Although... *I* think it would've been cool to witness a human autopsy. Hardened biologist that I am, I don't think the "shock program" would've affected me too much. |
| |
No defensive driving course?? That's no fair... |
| |
Yeah, hehe, before he had everyone come up, the judge talked about the coroner's program. He was like, "we'll SEND you to the coroner, and we'll MAKE you watch an autopsy being done on an accident victim. Maybe THAT'll scare you into driving slower!" And the whole time, I was thinking... damn, that'd be pretty cool. Maybe I'll get to do that. But alas, if I were only going 1 mph faster.... |
| |
Never underestimate the use of the phrase "Please?" |
| |
I've witnessed a human autopsy. Believe it or not, at the LA county general hosp when Nagouchi (the one who did Marilyn Monroe) was still the coroner. It was actually interesting. (I know this really dates me). It wasn't as bad as knowing that a friend of mine who got into a car accident memorial weekend might be paralyzed for the rest of his life. |
| |
Dapper Dan is coming to visit from the Houston Swing Dance Society next week. I met him this past Sunday at the Melody Club in Houston and he told me he'll have some time in the evenings to check out our dance scene. Please extend him a San Diegan greeting and an invitation to dance should you come across this traveling Lindy Hopper! |
| |
Hey, all, While all you guys were going up to Eddie Reed's concert, an era closed at the Rocket. The last night of the Rocket at Vasa Hall had a small but great group of dancers show up for its last hurrah. I'll admit I mainly went for sentimental reasons. Thank you Jim for a great mix of dance tunes. Thank you Jen, Michelle M, Xela, Amy, "Swing Mom" Chris, and Val for making this wistful lead remember the days at Vasa gone by. Looking forward to the new Rocket at Portuguese Hall, HopMichael |
| |
How about another Dennis/Ron Challenge?? I think it would be a close one as Ron is trying more to appease everyone, and Dennis well, has played a lot of sh&*$% lately. Seriously, both of them play better music when they are tryinng to appeal to other's constituency. |
| |
Don't even go there Ian. I'm not interested in doing anything with Dennis. |
| |
Who is djing tonight? |
| |
According to the online schedule, Susan Bird and Dax will be dj'ing. |
| |
Hmmm, actually I thought Dax was "flying solo" tonight. I'm not supposed to be dj-ing at the Rocket again until September. I hope I got that right! |
| |
Well, the online schedule has a "subject to change" notice. So, you're probably right, Susan! |
| |
Did anyone else catch the VASA Hall header??? |
| |
Sad, huh. I really liked that space. |
| |
Whaaaaaat???? |
