Thanks, Chris, for another perspective on the evening at Claytons. The truth seems
to always lie somewhere in the middle. Maybe that's why the truly great dancers
always dance from their "middle", I mean...uh..."center".

"And by refusing to listen or dance to it because it isn't in 6-track Dolby Hi-Fi Surround-Sound, then you're limiting yourself just as much as the Swing Nazi that I have been accused of being would." - Dennis
Um, but I'm not refusing to listen or dance to it.

Actually I was all set to go, but didn't get off work till 9:00 pm- weekly reporting can be a pain. Plan to be out a bunch this week, practicing new Jeremy and Alicia stuff.

I'll be DJing at the Firehouse this Thursday. Not sure what I'll be featuring. I'll try to mix it up, as usual... But I'm having an urge to mix in some fast ones. But it depends on the crowd.

Fantastic job last night, Ron! I had a really great time last night.

Yeah, I'll second that. Especially liked the fact that many tunes came from the CD you made for me: Playful Tunes for HopMichael.

Love that tune: Here We Go Again. Thanks for that dance, Krista!

Class? DJ? I'm outta the loop now.. someone help me! ~8^)

I was supposed to be DJing at the Firehouse tonight, but I've still got some major papers to write. So Ron will be spinning in my stead.

I'll probably hang out after the Swing Movement class for a bit, so I might see you tonight.

Ciao,

Meeshi

He's teaching a routine, building week to week, I think.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Laurel (Laurel) on Thursday, December 14, 2000 - 01:44 pm: Edit

He does the routine only at the very end of class so it'll still be worth it to go for the other stuff. Maybe if newcomers show up, he'll go slower on the routine so *I* can get it! I was an idiot last week.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Andy (Hitman) on Thursday, December 14, 2000 - 02:02 pm: Edit

what time is class?

and the routine.. is it a swing movement or a lindy one (ie does a person need knowledge of lindy to take it?)

i have a friend who doesn't lindy. would the class be inappropriate for her?

Ron...you suck. if ever there would be a book or
directory, if you will, to refer to suckiness, you
would be on every page, thus fitting every damn
description of suckiness. But I had a good time
tonight. I had a good time tonight despite your dumb
ass. I mean, please...in the parlance of our times, a
swing dj, if you will, who plays worthless shit to
begin with...HOW IN THE •••• DO YOU NOT HAVE ANY
FUCKING CHARLIE FUCKING
CHRISTIAN???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, please...you...you...tweed!!!
CHARLIE CHRISTIAN!!!
Have you never heard of him before?
Has his name somehow eluded you in your vast search
for "good" swing music? How in the hell do you...just
how do you justify this?
How does one claim to be any sort of swing dj at all,
and NOT own one SINGLE FUCKING CHARLIE CHRISTIAN
CD?????!!!!!!
ok...i didn't mean that. cussing and swearing up a
storm is not becoming...i mean it's unbecoming.
but ••••...•••• me...no Charlie Christian.
that's sick.
it's not even the fact that I had a Charlie Christian
c.d. with me that you refused to play because of your
pissy rule of not playing other peoples c.d.'s (which
I do not care to hear any justification for if you
dont mind)
but it's the fact that you didn't have any Charlie
Christian of your own on hand to begin with.
that, and toppled with the fact that you actually
offered up Benny butt •••• Goodman in his stead. you
fucking fascist.
blech.
crazy bitch.
do your dumbass a favor and buy some charlie
christian. ANY charlie christian...any at all. any
will due. if the c.d. says "Charlie Christian"
then buy it. buy it or I will summon the almighty
powers of Sydney Bechet to strike your weasily ass
down with the palsy.
either that, or I'll beat you senseless like the
prissy little school bitch you are.

by the way, your slow music was 100 times better that
ANY of the fast shit you played, so dont go around
thinkin you did anybody a favor by playing uptempo bad
music. save it.
i could listen to that slower shit all night...but who
the hell wants to dance slooooowwww allllllll
niiiiight? please....you must work for the Art
Association of La Jolla.

As far as I'm concerned, Jake, if you show up at place I'm DJing again, I'll do my best to play all the crap you hate, in an attempt to drive you out the door. And don't bother coming up to the DJ booth to ask me about something I've played or to make a request again.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Blackrider (Blackrider) on Friday, December 15, 2000 - 12:42 pm: Edit

hehehehehe

no really, go buy some charlie christian. do your self a favor...you know, like a chritmas present from you to...you.
besides, ron, what would you know about what I hate? in that case, I really hate the fucking eagles man, so if you played any of that shit, i would take my hat off to you. if i was wearing one.
hahahaha, woa, you are a crazy bitch, you're probably fuming right now!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Reuben Brown (Gurureuben) on Friday, December 15, 2000 - 12:45 pm: Edit

Three things are funny about this:

1. Jake, Charlie Christian mainly played WITHIN Benny Goodman bands, it being his Big Band or more frequently his small groups... so why the ragging on Goodman?

2. Jake is right though, how could any "swing DJ" not have any Charlie Christian?!? I mean for Christ Jebus' sake, the most popular version of "Flying Home" (as loved by many Savoy influenced dancers) features Lionel Hampton and Charlie Christian playing with one of Goodman's small bands.

3. Jake asking about something Ron played. Yeah, that will happen... how funny is that? And Ron telling someone to not make any requests again... what an assshole of a DJ!

Okay, carry-on in the land down under.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron (Ron) on Friday, December 15, 2000 - 01:19 pm: Edit

2. Then I probably do have Charlie Christian! But not a Charlie Christian CD. But hey, he died in 1942 and I don't claim to have a lot of pre-1945 stuff.
3. Reuben, the last time Jake was at the Firehouse, he asked me about the Wycliff Gordon version of "It don't mean a thing" that I played, and who did the version of "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" I played (Artie Shaw, 50's). I have been polite to him despite his flaming here on the forum, but I don't think I'll bother now.

I don't think any of my Eagles swings, or I'd play it for you, Jake.

O.K., so I don't know as much about music as the other posters on this thread, but I'm kind of curious how preferring Benny Goodman makes one a Fascist.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Blackrider (Blackrider) on Saturday, December 16, 2000 - 12:58 am: Edit

1. I know Charlie played much with Goodman, and I wasn't raggin on Goodman. The issue here is not Goodman. The fact that he offered up Goodman instead is what infuriated me. Not because I dont dig on Benny, its just that if Ron, who just said he doesnt carry much pre 1945 stuff, were to play some goodman, there is a very very very veeeerrry small chance that the goodman he could offer up could hold a candle to Goodman small groups with Charlie Christian.

2. Ron...dont be an ass...wait, that's like telling a dog not to eat his own shit...hmmm, well ron, since you are, and probably always will be an ass, just keep being an ass, but do YOURSELF a favor and go out and pay the 11.99 for a Charlie Christian c.d.
(one that says in great biiiiig letters, CHARLIE CHRISTIAN)

3. Yes Reuben, you are half correct. The second time I asked Ron about a recording was because I was in an absolute state of shock when I heard him put on a Wycliff Gordon c.d. I was stupdified. however the man (ron) had no idea about what band mr. Gordon had played in...figures. i was not surprised.
But the first time I asked Ron about a recording was, as he said, in refference to a (very shitty) version of "Softly as a morning sunrise". It sounded very white-bill eliott-esque. I asked him if it was Bill. He said "nope, artie shaw, 1950's"
same shit, different smell in my opinion. dont flatter yourself ron.....wait, again, that's like asking a pederast to lay off the kidie porn.
nevermind.

also, ron, lay off the "oh, i was so polite, but not anymore" shit. i could give a rats ass what you think about me, as im sure you could give a good hot damn what i think of you. you dont have to try extra hard to play shit i dont like, youre doing a fine job as it is. dont you get it?

heh, it figures you would own an eagles album.
to quote ToMwAiTs,
"the eagles bore the shit out of me"

you're middle name is boredom. you swear on and go by the boredom bible. hell, you WROTE the book on boredom.

i could go on and on dissing you on the internet, but it has, not to my surprise, made me bored.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Blackrider (Blackrider) on Saturday, December 16, 2000 - 01:05 am: Edit

and just for the record, a good dj plays requests regardless of differences in tastes or opinions. once again, dont kid yourself ron, you are not a good dj, so telling me you will no longer play any of my requests (not that you ever have to begin with) does not surprise me or bum me out, and it does nothing more than substantiate the fact that you are a worthless dj whom the public has accepted as the opposite.
you or others might call it opinion, i on the other hand call it as i see it; bad taste provoked by brain washing.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Andy (Hitman) on Monday, December 18, 2000 - 12:47 pm: Edit

Aw man, Hep, your post sounds really bad, since it's ambiguous whether you're referring to Reuben's comment about the horse, or um, er you
he he

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By HepNat (Hepnat) on Monday, December 18, 2000 - 01:06 pm: Edit

Well seeing as I am neither dead, nor an animal, and since Reuben wasn't talking about beating me, I thought it was obvious I was referring to the horse.
Come on, man, you're an engineer. Where's your logical reasoning. That said, I thought the ambiguity would make it amusing.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron (Ron) on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 11:24 am: Edit

I'll be DJing tonight at the Firehouse, so come on down. I have 5 or 6 new CDs, and each has a track or two worth spinning. Basie, Ray Brown, Ray Charles, Oscar Peterson. Of course I'll be playing some old favorites, too. Speaking of which, are there any songs that you haven't heard for a while (maybe because they were overplayed and we all got sick of them) that you want me to resurrect?

If you hadn't heard by now, Meeshi has decided to limit the Firehouse to just him and me for DJs, and we alternate weeks. This is my week on. So from now on you know the Firehouse will be consistent with a generally groovy, light on old big-band, music mix. I'll continue to play my eclectic mix of groovyjazz/vocals/blues/popswing&jump blues/R&B/R&R/bigband songs, with an emphasis on groovy jazz tunes, which I've been getting into more recently anyway.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Spawn of Satan (Melbamoose) on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 11:48 am: Edit

Why would Meeshi do that????

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron (Ron) on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 12:57 pm: Edit

You'd have to ask him. He started it a few weeks back.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff Eldridge (Jeff) on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 07:39 pm: Edit

I like the idea. Sorta guarantees that the Firehouse will be a place you can come to
and "groove" since most of us can't get up to San Francisco very often.

The Firehouse started out that way and became popular that way. I think beginners like
it, too.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Adminorama (Adminorama) on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 12:21 am: Edit

I agree - as there are other places where different music can be heard in town. I just hope that everybody continues to be positive and keep recruiting so that our three regular SD venues can stay open.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Spawn of Satan (Melbamoose) on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 12:59 am: Edit

To me, it definitely guarantees that the music is going to suck at least every other week. As long as some people feel the need to get their "groove" on. Oh well.

Here's the scoop on the board...MY HOSTING COMPANY SUCKS!!!!!!!!

They keep running out of disk space on my server. I don't get it. (Since I contend with similar issues at work and know that any idiot can check disk space :)).

I am going to switch next week and the problems should (I sure hope) go away. In fact, I'll try to test the site on the new company's servers Monday and move the whole thing by Wednesday.

So patience...it will be fine shortly. Thanks!
