So when do we get to see the results of the Best of San Diego swing? |
| |
HERE ARE THE RESULTS! I won every category! From best lead to best dressed female! Most shirt changes to best swing venue! I hope that I get to host the Best of next year so I can keep up the streak! (Tammy is in charge of the voting - it's up to her.) |
| |
And I imagine she's been busy with other small items... |
| |
Aaahh Shawn..so my little 'following' lesson made quite an impact...i didn't think they'd all notice so quickly! ;) -valerie- |
| |
Hey, Tammy, when are the results of this to be announced? |
| |
***BEST OF SAN DIEGO SWING*** I just spoke with Tammy...I am going to be announcing the winners in the next few days! She has been so busy with her daughter Clara that it has been forgotten a little lately. I was thinking of announcing a winner a day for a couple weeks. Thoughts? |
| |
just put them all up at one time |
| |
I'll put up a couple winners every few hours, with all winners announced by the end of the week. Sorry Ian! They are on the front page of the website. ENJOY |
| |
The winners will be announced at a SDLHS function to be held in May. Details are forthcoming. |
| |
Shawn and Glenn, you teases. Just post them. Its not like its the academy awards or anything. |
| |
I think that a SDLHS function to honor the winners would be great! We could all get seriously dressed up and have a blast! Anybody have suggestions on a venue? Something very nice, I hope. ^_^ I'm thinking everybody go black-tie, nice dinner at the venue and then we have some performances from local or out-of-towners, and then present the awards! I'm also thinking this would be the perfect opportunity for groups of us to rent limmo's, party it up and do the night up right! Anyone else interested in renting limmo's with me? |
| |
Jeez, the awards weren't that formal. People who didn't have internet access didn't vote, and we just have to hope that Shawn controlled the cheating enough so that the awards are somewhat valid. I'm not a SDLHS member, anyway. |
| |
Yeah! With two consecutive votes so far, San Diegans prefer dancing to Swing music spun by Dennis. I'm with you Charlie. I have an idea on where to start the party. |
| |
Careful with the assumptions - 2nd and 3rd place were REALLY close to Dennis in the voting... |
| |
But two for two is very impressive. Dennis has a very loyal following. We need a second DJ who caters to the LA/Hollywood camp. |
| |
The most remarkable aspect of the voting to me was the three way tie for best couple. Each has such a different style. |
| |
[stepping over chairs to reach the podium] I'd like to thank the members of the Academy for all their support. You like me; you really like me! I'd like to thank my acting coaches who encouraged me when I was mustering my first funny face. I'd like to thank my talented make-up artists who knew how to bring out the face they always knew was deep in me. I'd like to thank all my follow co-stars. If I drew a laugh from you, it was worth all the effort. But most of all, I'd like to thank you, the audience, for recognizing the true artistry of a funny face. =) [does 10 one-handed push-ups before being kicked off the stage...cue the music] |
| |
We've really worked hard ever since we started (1-3/4 years ago). We are still practicing and trying to better ourselves to this day. We're also trying to diversify our style w/ incorporating different dances. Such as: the smoothness and effortless grace of Carolina Shag, the foot work and energy of Boogie Woogie, the fluidness of Hollywood Style, the playfulness of Savoy style, and the Balboa and Collegiate Shag. Quite a mix, yet they are all swing dances. Thanks to all again!!!! |
| |
Just two categories to go... |
| |
the crowd goes silent |
| |
They are ALL POSTED on the www.SwingOrama.com homepage. The voters have spoken. In order to ensure accuracy, I checked IP addresses, checked cookies and removed all obvious voting irregularities (there were several). Quite a few people voted, so at least the web-going crowd has spoken regarding the 1999 Best of San Diego Swing! |
| |
Surprisingly it looks fair. To tell you the truth, I was really skeptical of the voting accuracy. My personal opinion, the winners deserved their placement. |
| |
I think that all the votes are believable. Different combinations of nominees for some categories could have changed some of the voting for some of the close races. Congrats to the winners! (And thank you to those who felt I had good swing spirit!) |
| |
Cool! Congrats to the winners. Hey Shawn, about how many votes were cast? (there I go, looking for more data again...) All the nominees were excellent. It would have been cool to post them again, like the Academy awards. "The nominees were" and "the winner is!" |
| |
Go Meeshi! 3 awards - wow! : ) Mel finally gets the credit she deserves - Everyone smiles & has the greatest time dancing with you...that in itself makes you the best follow in my opinion! (and being such an incredible dancer helps too of course!) :D Love ya my friend! -Valerie- |
| |
Wow--thanks everybody, I feel so honored. Though, in my opinion, Jim Cruzen is the best lead in San Diego, Jake is the most creative dancer and Billy Middledorf is definitely the most fun to follow. Billy, I promise to save all my topless blues dances for you ;) But I take full pride in being recognized as the best male follow in SD, though I know there's lots of room for improvement. Peace, Meeshi |
| |
Some anectdotes about our favorite leads from the Swing Break weekend: When I spoke with Julia (Droolia of Yehoodi) of SF/Philly over the weekend, she said that after dancing with Jim, she wanted to take him home with her in her luggage!! =) Overheard: Charlie complaining that if he got asked one more time by an out-of-town follow how to find Billy, he'd....! =) |
| |
Hey Meeshi. I say best female lead and best male follow need to dance together next time we're in the same place. I'll lead you follow! Thanks everyone who voted! |
| |
Does that mean I dance with Marcus? Michael? Hmmm. |
| |
Another anecdote: I overheard a couple of young ladies in the NTC restroom complaining that they should only allow people 21 or older into these events. Apparently she had a great dance with some guy (Billy? Jim? She didn't name names) then was crushed to find out he was only 20. I told her any guy over 18 was legal...(I think that's right!). |
| |
Laurel, I couldn't resist: Legal for what? LOL! |
| |
If any of the winners have photos they can email me, I'll make a winners page. Chris, Lisa, Meeshi, Melissa, Tammy, Marcus, Michael, Dennis, send them along... |
| |
Do I have to draw a diagram for you, Michael! Not that *I'd* be doing anything like that with an 18-yr-old. |
| |
Its a year later, I wanted to look at this again, but I can't find the results! Shawn, maybe you could just copy them into this thread for posterity. If we were to do a new round of voting, the results would probably be similar, but I don't think Marcus would win for Lindy slut. He doesn't come out enough anymore! And I'm not sure who would win for most spirit. |
| |
I think I might nominate Quintin for the new Lindy Slut, do to all his recent traveling for lindy exchanges and all. |
| |
Ok, if I'm going to be nominated for something, would someone please define 'Lindy Slut' for me? |
| |
a lindy slut is someone who will lindy with anyone, anywhere, at any time. is that you, quint? |
| |
Oh yeah, Quentin is the consummate Lindy slut these days. |
| |
Ok, shall we have another "Best of SD Swing?" Any new fun topics you want added? I'll put it together if there's interest. |
| |
For most spirit, most support of the scene, or however it was phrased, I'd nominate Meeshi, who continues to run two weekly venues plus one monthly one; Jeff who runs one weekly venue (at no pay!) and sets up and tears it down (with some help) every week; Valerie & Tan who continue to introduce large numbers of people to swing through their classes at the university; and lots others. |
| |
Yeah, Shawn, it was fun last time. Could you re-post the categories/winners from last year? |
| |
Heh, another poll would be cool. When I saw the last one I didn't know who half the people were yet. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
Hmmm... Maybe I'll reconsider nominating Quintin. Even though he travels everywhere for lindy, he's awfully picky about the tempos that he's willing to dance to. ;) |
| |
Mel, since you put it that way, it would be an honor to be a 'lindy slut,' however, like Valorie stated, I don't believe I'd be the best representative, especially since I prefer to watch lindy hoppers dance to faster tempo songs. |
| |
Virtual post by Marcus: (based on email to me) "And it's Lindy WHORE, not Lindy Slut. Worlds of difference." |
| |
That's a very interesting posting strategy for the ultimate lurker. |
| |
Hmm. Whores have to be paid to, uh, perform. Whereas sluts just need a willing partner. Interesting distinction, Marcus.... K |
| |
I was just contemplating that very same thing! |
| |
Yeah, Shawn, let's have another poll, but maybe we should include more subcategories. For example, you can still have a BEST OVERALL LEAD/FOLLOW, but have subcategories such as BEST FAST-DANCING (Bal/Shag/Lindy) LEAD/FOLLOW, BEST SLOW (blues/Navy) DANCING LEAD/FOLLOW, SMOOTHEST LEAD/FOLLOW, MOST PLAYFUL LEAD/FOLLOW, MOST ENJOYABLE LEAD/FOLLOW to watch, MOST ENJOYABLE LEAD/FOLLOW to dance with, etc... I just hope I retain my title as "BEST MALE FOLLOW" (fingers crossed), but I'm a little scared, Chance's swivels have been looking pretty darn good lately. |
| |
Meeshi - i choose, when following, to not swivel. I think that swiveling looks rather funny when i try to to do it so i keep it to a minimum - but of course i'll swivel for you anytime - |
| |
Marcus, Marcus, Marcus! Won't post with us, never comes out to dance with us anymore...*sniff* |
| |
Marcus came out and danced with us on Saturday. Looking rather spiffy in his tux, I might add! |
| |
Chance, I know you don't swivel, I just wanted to say something pithy. |
| |
I confirm that it is Lindy Whore. We got the idea for that category from the fabulous t-shirts that David Butler made a long time ago (before many of you were dancing!) The Best of S.D. swing was actually created by SDLHS as a fun awards ceremony type thing...but the cat got out of the bag early, so we didn't get to do our original plan. |
| |
i know that it was all in good fun when we had this last year, but if you asked me i wouldn't vote for doing it again. we got through it w/o ruffling anyone's feathers, but setting up any type of competition or classification is just asking for trouble. i like things just the way they are. |
| |
I'd agree with Melissa on this one. Has anyone noticed that you guys are all talking about having the best of San D-E-I-G-O awards right now? |
| |
Melba, Dat iz xacktly duh poynt! -HopMicheal |
| |
Hop? How did your "feeling da' music camp at Mikeys", (including illustrations), seminar go last weekend? |

Nancy, thanks for asking. The evening was great. We were fortunate to have Rich Diaz bring over his keyboard to demonstrate chord progressions. HepNat brought both a rhythm track CD and her musical wisdom and dispensed both generously. Except for Kermit falling asleep to my droning (LOL! now I know how a professor feels!), I think the dozen dancers who showed up got something out of it. I went over AABA patterns and blues patterns, played some examples, then opened the floor to how different dancers listen and play with the music. Then I kicked everyone out so I could enjoy the "X-files" season finale. =) -Hop "Listen to the music" Michael |
| |
just a disclaimer... i don't know chord progressions... Nat played those =). i'm just a bassist that HAS a keyboard ;) but i know when you hit it, funny sounds happen... =P |
