I saw that San Diego was part of the SoCal road trip for the band. I hope they roll out more than the usual extra flooring.

Yes! Lavay is back in town!

For those who've never heard her band perform live, I highly recommend attending a concert. Same band that put out the album "One Hour Mama" with "Oo Poppa Do" and "Blue Skies" and "Walking Blues (Walk right in, Walk right out)" Great sound and personable band.

The last time they were in town was one of the best swing nights San Diego has had. The show, the energy, everything.

Say, this is coming up this next Wednesday! This is a do-not-miss show! Don't count on room for dancing, though.

Say, anyone know what time the band starts?

What's the cover?

And, perhaps more importantly, is the Catamaran expanding the dance floor?

David?

According to the Night and Day, the show begins at 9pm and the cover is $12.

Thanks, CatThyme!

And you will be there, I trust?

I will indeed! I have no idea whether or not my Brazilian guest joining us... He sounded quite intrigued, though. He seemed to enjoy the Champion Ballroom on Saturday.

Also, I just called the Catamaran, at 858-488-1081, and asking to speak to someone in charge of the Cannibal bar, they connected me to the voicemail of Robert Fisher who is "Beverage Dept. Mgr and Entertainment Director" and I encouraged him by voicemail to have a large dance floor for tonight's concert. If anyone wants to do the same, it might help! I'm not sure if he's the exact right guy to talk to, though.

Hey, I called yesterday too and got the same voice mail as well. I wonder if he thinks there's a rabid band of dancers ready to descend now.

I called and got the bar. Not sure if he got the hint for larger dance floor for the large crowd.

That was an incredible night! So many faces that were new to me. Gives one hope for the survivability of our liitle scene.

Awesome. The biggest crowd I've ever seen at the Cannibal Bar for a swing event. Great energy, great music...

Shawn,
It was nice to see you out and about since there has been some talk of you being a fake computer entity. I was beginning to doubt my recollection of ever dancing with you (especially since it was ONE dance a LOOOOOOOOONG time ago!).
=)

I'm sorry Cheryl! I cannot wait for our next dance!

(Jeff, you dog. Lavay was sure looking good...)

It was great to see everyone at the show last night! Seems like every dancer came out of the woodwork to catch Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers. What a great dance community we have!

Ain't she sweet? What a voice! And what a radiant smile. And, perhaps most importantly, what a dancer-friendly attitude.

I think San Diego impressed Lavay and company with our love for the band. Certainly that encore-demanding clap/chant got Chris Siebert (on piano) going. As I've posted elsewhere, Chris is an amazing piano player. Did you see how he kept everyone dancing with just his solo boogie-woogie piano playing? Even adding a little "C-jam Blues" riff within the boogie-woogie structure off the cuff.

*Sigh*

Is there any way we can get Lavay to come more than once a year?

Oh, one other thing: Chris Siebert said they were playing at the Derby (in LA) this weekend, if you missed it or want to hear more of the band.

They even had an expanded floor. Well, sorta. And no side tables.

I must add that cardboard remains a very loose definition of "expanded dance floor" But hey, that's what Mr. Fisher said. I suppose it was better than nothing.

well...I think that I enjoyed dancing on the carpet more than the super duper slippery cardboard. I almost landed on my rear a couple of times. =)
