I just realized we did this same poll in March of this year, with the results posted April 5th. Although the venues have changed a bit, so I guess it's not the exact same poll. And LBtB was monthly during the day. |
| |
the only time I ever go to the home page is when Ron posts that a new poll is up. It would be interesting to see how much swingorama is responsible for newcomers choosing venues. My assumption would be that word of mouth held more weight. At the very least, I hardly think people should take the polls personally. They have never had any real statistical merit. And people always think their choice didn't win because of "multi-voting". Seriously, I think people need to stop getting their panties in a bunch over them. It's foolish. Krista |
| |
Hmmm. How do you go to www.swingorama.com without getting the home page? Don't most people just get the front page and read the headlines before going to "Forum"? |
| |
www.swingorama.com/discus I've never gone to the front page for the express purpose of reading the headlines. |
| |
I always go to the front page, but then I never go out to hear any word of mouth. I just look at all the events I'd LIKE to go to. Sometimes there are cool pics or I learn something about a local band, and of course, I like to multi-vote! |
| |
I pretty much only go to the front page when there's a new poll, too. |
| |
Okay, well the general public, as well as most of the swing scene I'd venture to say, goes to the website and gets the cover. I like front page news personally. |
| |
Um, I was joking. |
| |
I figured, as I said up a ways. |
| |
How can you claim to know what the "general public" as well as "most of the swing scene" are doing?? Don't you think those are sweeping generalizations that you really don't exactly have your pulse on? Yes, you might run a successful and popular swing event. That does not equate to you being with each and every individual who signs on to their computer or asks a friend or stranger about swing dancing in San Diego. You have to look beyond yourself and understand that just because you think a certain way is the ultimate and most appealing way does not necessarily mean that everyone follows in step. Everything is always great and wonderful and obviously a certain way to you. I know people have mentioned your "rosy glasses" numerous times, but it's not just that. In my opinion, your giant generalizations fall short and illustrate lack of understanding. |
| |
Good morning!! |
| |
I almost never go to the home page unless there's a new poll going. I don't bother much with the calendar either, as the event information on the discussion page seems to be more comprehensive than on the calendar. |
| |
Didn't think that assuming that most people go to the actual website, as opposed to a sub link within it, was a "giant generalization". And I didn't really "claim to know" by saying "venture to say". Guess I just lack understanding. That's it. Good morning. Such a nice day!! |
| |
Btw, for all those who never go to "www.swingorama.com" to read the forum, I'd like to let you know that there's a photo of the Pacific Beach Women's Club on the cover, for those who haven't been there yet. It's not a great photo. I picked it up off their website. But it'll help if you're trying to find it. |
| |
it's also on the forum. no need to go to both for the same info. |
| |
Oh, yeah. Duh. |
| |
the san diego scene is just getting more and more lame |
| |
well, I can hardly argue with you there... |
| |
Smoke another joint, dude. It's what ya make it. |
| |
From an advertising stand point, from my experience as both buyer and seller, the home page has the least value. From the limited data on this thread, people who do go the homepage are going through it to get to their destination -- they aren't being distracted by the advertising on the way(in this case a poll promoting most popular venues). People who think San Diego has a lame scene should travel more. You'll see that it's no worse, and in a lot of cases better then cities you would expect to be rocking. |
| |
"...people who do go the homepage are going through it to get to their destination". I agree. But that's true with any publication or website. From an advertising standpoint, if I want the front cover of the Union Tribune Home Buying Guide it's ALOT more expensive than advertising anywhere else. The fact that people have to go through it to get where they want to go is what makes it so valueable. Many years ago I used to sell advertising for "The San Diegan", a newcomer guide to SD. The most expensive were the back cover and inside front cover. The farther in from the cover the less expensive the ad. But as you mentioned, Ian, everyone has their own destiation. For Krista it's the discussion page, but for others it's the Calendar, Teachers, Music, Photos, etc. But whatever. The big picture is our scene is small, less than 100 core regulars, maybe 200 more on the fringe, so we're basically always preching to a very small choir. But for Joel and Alison, Jim and Margie, Nat and Tertia, Melissa Varianno, Meeshi, Chance, me and others who promote swing in SD, we're giving out "www.swingorama.com" to the masses in flyers and they get the cover and find their destination. I wonder if there's a way Shawn knows how many NEW hits we get on a weekly basis. For that reason I think it's important the cover be inviting and informational. It's all gonna change here pretty quick anyway. I think Shawn's updating it to a different format. And Ian this whole "SD scene is lame" thing is lame. We've got so many people moving here from other cities and most of the time people are pretty impressed with all the venues we have for a relatively small scene. Nathan and Tertia are working hard to get Corner Boogie going. It's such a fantastic room. And I think Nathan is one of the best dancers I've ever scene. He's got a great attitude and is so willing to help people learn. The Firehouse's new location at Starlight is way better than the old location and is being well attended. Lindy by the Bay is argueably the best outdoor venue in the country. And how lucky are we to have Joel and Alison? They work their asses off teaching privates, classes, The monthly Hep Spot in one of the best rooms I've ever seen, and put on the annual Balboa Rendevous. Chance is putting such a cool thing together for New Years. Jim and Margie are getting North County going and Hazel, bless her heart, is making a go of it at Neiman's on Mondays to provide a place for them to dance. And Mel puts on the best workshops and exchanges. And Rob Duncan's band is playing again. We've got new venues, new people, improved locations. We've got it so good here compared to other places. |
| |
Actually Jeff -- I wasn't very good in my words. I think San Diego's scene is one of the top scenes. When it comes to swing, the grass isn't greener outside of San Diego. |
| |
I know, man. I was thinking last night as I was at Henry's having a blast that SD has so many options. We've got great swing dancer sponsered venues, but we've also got several really fun bars, like Henry's. Tio Leo's, The Whistle Stop, The Casbah, Humphrey's; they all have great bands often, like The Fremonts, (which is the house band at the Whistle Stop, I think). And Patrick's downtown has LIVE blues every night of the week. |
| |
Jeff, The Fremonts generally play at the Whistle Stop once a month and occasionally at Tio Leo's. I've never seen you at the Whistle Stop, Bro. |
| |
I've been several times. I was there about a month ago when the Fremont's were playing. |
| |
I've been to the Whistle Stop once. They have swing bands? I've been on a weekend with a DJ! Hey, and WHEN is there going to be a new poll. These polls stay up too long. Don't you think. I've given up my evil ways of multiple voting! |
| |
There are no swing bands at the Whistle Stop, Tammy. |
| |
I've been there every time they've played and I've never seen you there, bro. Although I did notice some guy passed out under the table. LOL... Kiddin The Fremonts are a blues band. |
| |
The last time I went, about a month or two ago, I was suprised to see not one dancer there. It was frustrating. The Fremont's on a Friday and nobody showed up. So I tought a few people and had an okay time. And I've been there a bunch of times with Katie when Danielle, Roderick, Johnny and Dianne, Gary and others were there too. |
| |
Tammy- The polls usually stay up a while because I'm lazy! |
| |
Ron it's not cuz you're lazy it's cuz you're old! sorry, sorry, just kidding, couldn't resist... |
| |
Whew!! He got married just in time! |
| |
Poll ran from August 18 to Sept 18, 2004. What is your favorite San Diego swing/Lindy dancing venue recently? Lindy by the Bay on some Saturdays: 28.51% Henry's pub on Tuesdays: 23.97% Struttin at Starlight on Thursdays: 19.01% Shag Nights at Balboa Park on summer Fridays: 7.02% Neimans on summer Mondays: 7.02% Corner Boogie on Wednesdays: 4.55% Hep Spot at Memorial Museum on one Sat/month: 4.13% All Things Swing at Dance N Cty on 4th Saturdays: 2.89% Not sure/No opinion: 1.65% Other: 1.24% Total Votes: 242 From the total votes, there was obviously a lot of multi-voting. The early results, which were probably more accurate, showed LbtB first followed by Starlight second. |
| |
Yippy! a new pole and I can ethically vote 3 times! Way to be thinking! ...just wondering, are you obsessed with LBTB? |
| |
I wish the pole had been set up so that even people who didn't vote for LBtB as their "favorite" could still vote about what they do like about it. It's just going to turn into a 70%+ poll for "It wasn't MY favorite". And we all know anyway why people like it. It's outdoors, which at night means it's cool and breezy. The music's always great. It's free. Etc. And it's a great place to socialize and have dinner or drinks beforehand. I think it's time to move on to something else for a poll. |
| |
Jeez, its so hard to make a poll that someone doesn't complain about... |
| |
Leave off the "It's not my favorite spot". If you don't attend you don't need to vote. If you don't like anything about it you don't have to vote. We can tell by the last poll that it wasn't everyone's favorite. There's usually something you can find about any venue that you like and dislike. The poll is asking what is the thing/s you like about this particular venue. If it is or isn't my favorite venue I can still vote on a couple of these choices. The polls in the past usually have given me some... comic relief, which we all need in these times. What's even funnier is how some people take these soooo serious. This is about social dancing for fun, enjoyment, creativity, entertainment, etc. |
| |
Yeah, we need a fun poll! |
| |
Jeff, even the serious polls give me comic relief, because of the very fact that they are taken seriously. Probably the only ones who get their tail feathers ruffled are those who are involved with staging the venues. (Not pointing fingers at any one particular person.) |
| |
Poll ran Sept 18 to Sept 21: What are your top THREE reasons that Lindy by the Bay is your favorite San Diego Lindy hop dancing venue? (vote three times on different days) It wasn't MY favorite: 31.25% It's outside/the views/the ambiance: 18.75% It's free: 12.50% It's a fun place to chat or hangout when I'm not dancing: 10.42% There's a good mix of dancers and the dancers are friendly: 8.33% I can take my kids and dogs there: 8.33% It's on Saturdays: 4.17% The music is good: 4.17% Food and booze are nearby: 2.08% Good floor: 0.00% Other: 0.00% Not sure/No opinion: 0.00% Total Votes: 48 |
| |
Yeah, maybe I should have left off the "it wasn't MY favorite", but oh well. OK, I'll try to make a poll that no one can complain about! |
| |
But if you don't know Lee, it won't be funny, so you'll probably complain about it! |
| |
I will add that it's great to have you back out dancing again, Lee, your unique style and creativity are a delight to watch! |
| |
LOL… I am finally a poll topic. I am happy that I can once again dance with my friends. The last couple of years have been rough for me. And I thought that when I came back that I wouldn’t be able to find myself, to have fun again. It took a while but with you guys helping, I slowly got my groove back. By the way, Ron I never got a chance to say thank you for that great birthday jam. That was such a special moment that doesn’t often happen in my life. So thank you, thank you thank you. As for come out dancing more often, I will try. I am once again a student so I have two major factors limiting my come out dancing. They are Money and Time. But I will try. As for learning my style. I am willing to teach people my signature headlock move, if they wish. Just don’t ask me when I am dancing with my friends and especially when I am dancing with a hot girl. However, to truly teach others my style, I have to teach them my music. So how about I dj again? It’s been five years since my oops. Can I finally leave DJ purgatory? Don’t I get time off for good behavior? All we are saying is give Lee a chance |
| |
"We" who? |
| |
Lee, to DJ again, you have to promise to play five swinging tunes for every one novelty/disco/70's tune rather than the other way around! |
| |
LOL... DEAL! By the way, do DJs get to go to the venues for free? If that's the case then I need to DJ as often as people will let me. ļ |
| |
why not: Lindy Hop Balboa West Coast Swing Other or something? not hating...just wondering. |
| |
Boo Hoo, there's no poll! Hey, I had some ideas, but I've forgot them and can't find them on this topic thread. Oh well, bring on a new poll! |
| |
New poll on the presidential election posted. Old poll ran from Sept 21 to Oct 23. What dance would you most like to learn how to dance better? That dance that Lee does: 59.41% Lindy Hop: 35.29% Lindy: 2.94% Lindyhop: 2.35% Total Votes: 170 |
| |
Kerry's winning on Swingorama and he's going to win the election as well. Go Kerry! |
| |
New poll on dancing related christmas gifts posted. Old poll ran from Oct 23 to December 03: If you could vote officially right now, who would you vote for, for President of the United States? Kerry: 53.90% Bush: 34.04% Other: 5.32% Nader: 3.55% Undecided: 3.19% Total Votes: 282 |
| |
What about those of us who don't celebrate Christmas? |
| |
I'd be happy to vote for favorite dance related gifts for the Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and the Chinese New Year. Any guesses as to which gift I prefer? |
| |
Its too tough to make PC polls! Hey, how come no one voted for a new swing CD? Don't you guys like music? |
| |
Smoochies & chocolate trump music. |
| |
no one likes the music like you, Ron. |
| |
Smoochies & chocolate & music - a truly unsurpassable combination. |
| |
Krista, be nice. |
| |
and ruin my reputation?? |
| |
New poll posted on the Rhythmic Arts Festival. I forgot to save the results of the old poll. |
| |
One of my votes was for Hal's Angels. Sunday night was awesome. |
| |
I missed it, alas. It wasn't too crowded having all those people in that small space? That Claire De Lune is a nice little venue, in general, nice find, Chance. Anyway, one of my votes was for Lindy by the Bay. But I'm biased. |
| |
No, not too crowded at all! By Sunday night the attendance was down, as it was time for many to return home to ugh, work. |
| |
Yeah, Sunday and LBtB were my two favorites. And I danced the most at those two venues because I think it was easier to approach people. When it's a huge dance hall crowd I find I end up standing on the sidelines more. Sunday night had that small space intimacy. |
| |
Interesting poll results so far. The Sunday night at Claire De Lune with Hal's Angels is the overwhelming favorite, followed by Friday night at Silver Gate with Jonathan Stout, and Saturday Lindy by the Bay. The least favorite among the big events is the Thursday night dance, and the Saturday night dance at Silver Gate with Dream Team. Unfortunately, those were two of few events I went to! I didn't like that Saturday night at Silver Gate much at all. The sound system and the acoustics were really bad, and the 200 BPM songs were not for me. The solo Charleston competition was pretty cute, though. |
| |
New poll on favorite venues posted! This last poll ran until Feb. 14th. What two dance events of the San Diego Rythmic Arts Festival did you like best? (Vote twice on different days) Sunday night at Claire De Lune with Hal's Angels: 29.49% Thursday night at Starlight with DJs: 16.03% Friday night at Silver Gate with Jonathan Stout: 15.38% Saturday Lindy by the Bay: 15.38% Undecided or I didn't attend enough events to compare them: 7.69% Friday after-hours: 5.13% Saturday night at Silver Gate with Swing Dream Team: 4.49% Saturday after-hours: 4.49% Sunday daytime dance: 1.28% Friday daytime dance: 0.64% Total Votes: 156 |
| |
I went for the old standby about favorite venues, since they keep changing. Sorry it takes me so long to post a new poll--call me lazy. What are some other ideas for polls? Please list the list of choices as well as your poll question. |
| |
Lazy. |
