Try to post the previous messages on top so everybody can see what the topic of conversations are leading into. The format right now is like reading the end of the book before I know whatever has happened before.

Thanks

Hey! I took my time writing JUST what I was going to say in response to something. I reviewed it and found it just right, hit the button, and the sight was bogged down and said to try back later. When I backed up, my masterpiece was gone!! Is there anyway to keep a note 'til you can get through? Or should I abandon the idea of "novel" posts?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 10:57 pm: Edit

I haven't had that problem, but you can always compose a post in word or some other text editor, then cut and paste it onto the board. I hope that helps!

Hey,

Shawn asked me a WHILE ago to check out and post to this new message board and I lagged and didn't even look at it untila couple of days ago. Well, what a super-duper great job, Shawn. This is great. I especially like the email update option. I guess you are looking for suggestions and not just praise though, so lemme see...previous messages on top are good, but then you need to scroll down a bunch a stuff until you get to anything new. Is there a way to archive messages older than a week (or two or whatever) is that already an option?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron Bloom on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 03:09 pm: Edit

Shawn, how about putting a link back to the main swingtimeSD page at the bottom of the forum start page.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron Bloom on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 03:12 pm: Edit

Also, it may be a Netscape thing only as you thought before, but I really wish you could fix the two error messages I always get when I first enter the forum. Here's the details:

Javascript errors, Line 9, missing ; before statement:
"it's easy to post..."
Javascript error, Line 11, missing ; before statement:
"it's easy to post..."

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 05:46 pm: Edit

Ok, I added the link, I'm checking the javascript and I will try to set up the archiving! At SwingtimeSD.com, the customer comes first. Just keep sending those checks!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron Bloom on Wednesday, April 21, 1999 - 05:04 pm: Edit

Now its 3 Javascript errors, I think the same ones, but the line numbers are 10,12, and I forget.

Since you are so responsive, I have plenty of other ideas!

How about adding a little red "updated" tag to Each category on your main page, not just music and news? I saw that on another Lindy site somewhere else, I like to know when things change.

I like your calander, but I'm lazy and I only care about the current week, so I prefer the Chicago
Swing Scene calendar, and I noticed they just made it easier to print, but they dropped a description of the bars. But the format is nice:

http://www.hail.icestorm.net/chicagoswing/

I'll think of more later.
"its much easier to criticize than to do" - me

Keep up the good work! Great site!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Wednesday, April 21, 1999 - 07:32 pm: Edit

Ron - I like the updated tag idea. I'll see if I can think of a way to do that better without upsetting the layout (which I am afraid of tampering with). I am going to keep the calendar because I like that it can be updated via the web and by multiple people (with varying permissions). You can always click on the "week" display at the bottom!

As to the Javascript, no luck yet...

Shawn,
Some of the posts appear to getting cut off at the ends of paragraphs, but other times they load just fine. As to what to do, I have no idea, I'm just letting you know. Maybe it's just my computer, I am not really computer literate yet.

Also, can discussion topics go to a second page after they get so long? I've been following the "swing dancers" one and it takes ages to load. If you do start a "con't" page on it, it would probably be good to start it after the "Joeyschomoe" letters. The conversation does a little bit of a shift after that.

Thanks for listening. T.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Thursday, April 22, 1999 - 12:33 pm: Edit

Yes Teresa - I will put an archiving feature in place shortly. I don't know about cutting off the message though. I haven't experienced that!

Yo Shawn,

Check out this Lindy Forum based in Boston. They're using the same forum-ware as you. They however are not plagued by the "Solo" logo. And they have interesting bells and whistles.

In the discussion threads in each post, located adjacent to the poster's name are four arrow icons and an envelope icon. It allows the poster to either jump one message down/up at a time or jump all the way to the bottom/top. Or clicking on the envelopes allows you to automatically scroll the screen to the top of message.

Maybe you can schmooze the admin there. Then again, you may already know about these "bells & whistles" and decided that you didn't want to put'em up?

Here's the link:

Props to TofuBob for finding this site.

What happened to the discussion responding to Jake's post slamming Margaret's new Hollywood style class? I can't find those posts, am I going crazy and using the Keyword Search option poorly, or were they deleted... what's up?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, June 08, 1999 - 06:31 pm: Edit

Ron - I think you are going crazy! That aside, I exercised a rare editorial perogative and deleted the whole nastiness.

Perhaps that was a mistake, but I really was getting annoyed at the posts, and I didn't think there was any good place the discussion could go. Was that a mistake? Well, I am a free speach advocate, but I do have some flexibility given I own the medium! Tell me what you think. I am open minded and can be convinced to not exercise my power again (unless you believe I am already corrupt).

For those who noticed a slowwwwwww SwingtimeSD.com website over the past day....

Apparently illegal copies of some software were posted on the unix server this site uses. As such, when word is out, downloads overwhelm the system and it impacts the rest of the sites.

The problem is being addressed by my host!

Ok, they cleared out the server, fixed the file permissions and we are back in business. Websolo, my host, is impressive in allowing virtually unlimited space (important given the message board!) both in bandwidth and disk space. The catch is they are imperfect in some of the associated details.

I appreciate receiving emails letting me know when there is a problem (I am not at the site all the time) so I can fix it.

ENJOY

Shawn, a mild suggestion that you clean up the main forum topic list when you get a chance. I think "Hall of Fame" and "Ians fanatics" are a little old. "Ebay" could be "Buy and Sell", find some way to rename "Fashion and style.." so people don't post topics on it that have nothing to do with fashion. Hmm, what else. Get rid of empty topics like ORIGINS on fashion and style. Restyle the "Lindy-Hop" topic to be more like the Yehoodi General Swing Talk... Add a "Venues" topic at the top level, like Yehoodi. Get rid of question marks in your top-level topics names. Stuff like that. Can you tell I'm bored at work today? But Yehoodi and the Swinging Speakeasy are organized a little better...

Oh. Hmmm. Make that "rename", I guess. Just that I thought "General swing talk" was a better name than "Lindy-hop" for the topic. Take a look at those other forums, see if we can steal any other good ideas.

I had a discussion with Dennis, Ron and others about disabling the anonymous posting feature. Somebody can still just enter a name or create a bogus account, but the idea is to make it slightly harder (just slightly) to post a meanspirited message. It won't stop it, but perhaps limit it.

We'll see if it affects anything. I could also make each topic a private posting area, requiring registration, but I'll hold off on that right now.

The "ANON" feature does not disappear until there is one new post on the topic.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 01:22 pm: Edit

The limit just means that the unix server on which this site resides has become cluttered with temporary files and the sys admin needs to delete them. They aren't that responsible about it and it takes an email or phone call to remind them to do it!
