Hey, can anyone help me out with advice on cable modems or DSL? I need to get a high speed internet connection as fast as possible. I'm interested to see what you fellow San Diegans have in your own homes. What has worked the best. Best deals, etc. I live in the Hillcrest/Mission Hills area if that is any help. Thank you in advance to anyone who has more info on this subject. Krista |

Krista, I'm not in your neighborhood, but after more than 3 months of wrangling with PacBell DSL (after my prior DSL provider went out of business) I called Cox. They showed up the next morning and it's been flawless since. And it is cheaper. And faster. Easy choice. |
| |
I got a cable modem from MediaOne (now owned by AT&T Broadband) and have been extremely happy with it. In 3 years of use I've had only two periods of extended outages, and I get consistently fast download speeds (apparently I'm the only nerd on the block). My friend who lives about 2 miles away gets outages more often though. And of course we live in LA not San Diego. I hear that a lot of DSL providers are going out of business these days. |
| |
Would they have that in SD, Julius? Shawn, How much is Cox? From talking to other people, that seems to be where its at. |

Does anyone know anything about Road Runner? I have an ethernet card from living on campus at UCSD. Not that I really know what any of this means, anyway... |
| |
i think val's sister has road runner at their apartment. as far as i know, they just leave their computer connected all the time. |
| |
Roadrunner costs $45 a month if you have cable TV, $50 if you don't. It's not exactly cheap, but it's reliable and fast. Let me know if you decide to get it because I can get both you and me a discount for a referral (at least, I used to... don't know if they still have the offer). |
| |
Funny that I think Roadrunner is damn cheap for the quality you get. I had Roadrunner for three years in two different places and it kicks ass. Go with it if you can get it and you find phone modems intolerable. Because I've never seen a more appropriate signal to bitch however (well, except maybe the "Tosilectomy" thread that appeared last week when I got tosilitis). My aparment complex's cable provider is neither Cox nor TimeWarner so I haven't had the cable modem option for the last year of my housing. My roommate and I got DSL from CTSNet. They told us it would take 3-4 weeks to set up, it actually took them about 10-12 weeks. NorthPoint recently shut down it's DSL operations, and in the process shut down CTS... so now my roommate and I have to do this whole damned DSL thing _again_. We're going with Earthlink this time... but they're telling us 3-4 weeks again. I'm really not happy about this. I _hate_ not having the net at home. I'm such a junkie... I'm already in withdrawl... ^_^ Ryan W. Enslow ... who can only access the net at work. |

Yep, go with Cable. |
| |
Yeah, I need to get this done ASAP if I want to do it. I'll look into Road Runner and Cox. What's the difference between the two? |
| |
My understanding as far as operations for the most part none or very little. However you can only get one or the other depending who your cable carrier is. Time Warner = RoadRunner, Cox = Home. Therefore you don't have a choice. Cox/Home requires you to rent or purchase their modem and I think they have a setup fee but apparently you can do your own setup for no charge. TimeWarner/RoadRunner loans you the modem and I think their might be some setup charge. I was one of the first ones in San Diego on RoadRunner, it has been a while, I cannot remember the fee. I know RR gives you three accounts / email accounts and you can get free personal webspace. Go to www.help.rr.com They both act as your ISP so you will not have to use a separate one. So you will save money there Cable versus an analog phone modem/ISP. Previously I had a separate phone line $20, separate ISP $20 = $40. Cable = $50. Cost above previous system = $10. Warning - Once you use cable you will never be able to use an analog modem again. Joe |

its true, you will get so spoiled. i cant even use my computers at school because they just seem so painfully slow. but im on dsl. and dsl rawks and i have had no problems and it is so fast and great and i love it. but it sounds like everyone is on the cable train, so do that. be glad. good luck. |
| |
what is faster, dsl or cable? |
| |
Neither is faster -- the latency of both is very similar, but the bandwith of both is comparable, though cable tends to fluctuate more throughout the day as demand varies. I've seen cable go much faster or much slower than DSL depending on the time of day. There are web sites you can go to and run simple bandwidth tests from. |
| |
If you live in a highly populated area DSL may be better. I have had both where I live: Cable is better for me. Your =best= bet is to ask your neighbors if they have cable or DSL and ask (or look yourself) at their connection speeds. You will get the same speed as they do. go here to see how far you live from a DSL "Hub" http://www.cts.com/services/dsl/qual.htm this will give an estimate of your DSL speed. Note: Do not go with CTS as they were with supported by NorthPoint and NorthPoint just shut down. The closer you are to the DSL Hub the more likely you'll get a decent DSL speed. NOTE most companies WILL NOT guarantee a DSL speed. They just give you a speed range. Once you’re connected you can go to: www.DslReports.com and click on the TEST link. That’ll show you your connection speed. DSL will prolly take 2-3 months to installed, Cable prolly a week or two. =) |
| |
dude...2-3 months=all bad. I guess I need to call cox. |
| |
yeah, i have cox, it only took a wk. good luck. |
| |
go to http://www.attbroadband.com/services/index.html and click on 'is it available in my area' i subscribed the INSTANT it was available in my neighborhood and have never regretted it. $41.95 a month. |
| |
I am so, very lost. |
| |
oh, Tertia! What's the matter? |
| |
I don't get the importance of faster connection. I think it's nice to have to sit and wait for my computer to find its' way. It gives me time to floss my teeth, paint my nails...take a nap. (sarcasm) By the way...is there anyone out there who does not own a cell phone? I think I might be one of the few left who does not want to be THAT available to those that I am not with immediately. |
| |
Tertia, I still don't have a cell phone! I know that there's a few more of us, too. |
| |
I don't either. And I work at Qualcomm. And I'm one of the few around here that doesn't carry a pager during work hours. I just think that theren't really aren't many times when someone has to talk to me so urgently that they can't wait an hour or two until I check my voicemail or email. But I may give in on the cellphone in the near future. But I'll resist the pager. |
| |
Well Tertia, I went through a whole year without any phone service because I was constantly working at my previous job. When that project was finally finished, I opted to get a cell phone instead of a landline. The cost is about the same, and I get more benefits out of my cell phone. Plus it lets me know the time (I don't have a watch). |
| |
I don't have a cell, Tertia. THe main reason why I am in a rush to get the faster connection is so I can study for my music classes easier from the the comfort of my own home. All our listening is online streaming from school, but my computer is too slow to listen to anything, let alone do anything quickly without tying up the phone line. It's way over due, not to mention how spoiled I am after living on campus with free ethernet. |
| |
When the pager goes off, it is rarely someone wishing you a good day. Uninterrupted thinking is the best kind. -Hop "Don't let your boys grow up to be plugged into the cell/net/ether" Michael |

I hate (_hate_) cell phones. I'm sure I will eventually have one, but only when it's built into a personal computer that I carry around in my pocket... so like two, three years I bet. What I really don't like is how every one has started to use them in lieu of normal phones, which means now all of my phone conversations are with people who can't hear me half the time. Ryan W. I love mobil phones! Mine has given me freedom. YES!!! I only answer when I feel like it. But I can call anyone, anytime, from anywhere. I love DSL and cable. Speed is good. Give me SPEED!!! |
| |
I have a cell phone but it stays off until I want to make a call. It's there for my convenience, not for everyone else's. I have no desire for everyone to be able to call me at any time. Since it is always off, no one has the phone number, I don't even know what it is. As for broadband: I've had RoadRunner for a while now and I love it. Thruput is great and it is pretty reasonably consistent. Plus it went in very quickly and easily and the service was great (this was before they let you do it yourself, they insisted in coming out and doing it for you. I think you can buy the modem and do the installation yourself now.) |
| |
Um...no one give Jane any more speed. Thanks. |
| |
...umm, i can't guarantee that when i meet her...YES, THE FASTER THE BETTER!! |
| |
...WOO-HOO!! |
| |
Now now, ladies, I'm sure you don't want speed ALL of the time... I don't have a cell phone or a pager. I'm just not important enough. |
| |
Do you have protection? https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 this site will tell you how vulnerable your computer is to being hacked. If you need protection I HIGHLY recommend this FREE firewall: http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/partners/zonealarm/download.html If the first site says you're vulnerable, get that firewall and install it. If you want help email me. Rich (Defender of Swing-Computers!) |
