I've got a "site suggestion." I suggest you don't delete stuff. Or am I just not seeing a certain thread? |
| |
Go to "Last week" instead of "Last Day". Maybe what you're looking for is "Archived". I know Shawn messed up the front page the other day. Might have something to do with that. I suggest you email him directly. |
| |
I did that. It's not there. I'm speaking of the huge thread that started out about Satin Ballroom. |
| |
Hmmmmm..... |
| |
Shawn, you didn't delete it because it got a tad negative, did you? |
| |
Where did the thread about Saturday at Champion go? I swear I just posted on it yesterday... you know the one about the Bobby Gordon Trio? |
| |
I screwed up. That's it. Sorry. I rearranged the front page news items to keep the most topical items first, but that left topics and headers all messed up on the front page. I will not do that again. I meant to move a couple threads and deleted them by accident. Once again, sorry. I have quite a few "home grown" programs running on SwingOrama and I don't feel like rewriting them when there's an issue. I will not do that kind of rearranging again. |
| |
Are they gone for good? As in "poof"? |
| |
Hmmmmm..... |
| |
Reuben, I certainly don't personalize anything (or much!) on the board. The deletions were accidental. It came from trying - albeit poorly - to fix the following: http://www.swingorama.com/discus/messages/127/3657.html |

I communicated a version of this to Shawn privately. He's game. There is a chance of harvesting the lost discussions from people's browser caches, if it's done quickly. In the short term, Shawn could take the most complete recovered versions of the discussions, and make them viewable as HTML files. Some of the functionality of discus (such as the message indices showing up in the "last day" or "last week" views, or doing "keyword search", etc.) won't work, but the discussions will still be readable. In the long term, Shawn could ask the discus authors if they have a recovery tool to convert the HTML back to discus's internal format, or someone with time to kill could write one. This would recover the lost functionality. The fine print: I set my browser to nuke the cache every time it exits, but there's probably someone out there who didn't do that, and who has complete copies of some or all of the discussions. If you are that person, please e-mail them to Shawn at kingofcardiff@hotmail.com. If you have no idea how to follow these steps, don't waste any time on it... as long as one person succeeds, Shawn will have what he needs. However, a list of the titles or keywords of the missing discussions would be good to post, if there are more than the ones I suggest below. Given the negative tone of some of the lost discussions, maybe we should hope no one succeeds and just bury the memories. The way to retrieve files from the cache depends on your browser and operating system. Here are the combinations I have immediate access to, but there are many more. Your directory names may vary. Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows 95/98/ME: The cache is in subfolders of C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
Netscape on Windows 95/98/ME: Almost the same as for Internet Explorer. The cache is in a different place. You can find where it is by using the Netscape menu "Edit ® Preferences ® Advanced ® Cache". If you haven't set up accounts or customized anything else, it's probably at C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\default\cache E-mail pages to Shawn by using the Netscape menu "File ® Send...". Netscape on Unix (SunOS): The cache is in subdirectories of ~/.netscape/cache % cd ~/.netscape/cache If you find it (or other likely keywords), open it in Netscape, and e-mail it to Shawn if appropriate. Thanks Glenn! |

so no one has sent you anything, Shawn? That Satin thread is gone for good? |
| |
RegularJoe sent me a bunch, but not the Satin thread. I am still waiting. Sorry - like I said, it was a bad mistake. |
| |
I can't help you out from this computer at school, but perhaps I can check on my ghetto ass computer at home later on... I'd like to have that thread back, personally. |
