I finally fixed the POLL on the homepage. I wasn't sure what to put there for the first one, but suggestions are always welcome. And no, no "b&tch slap" polls. |
| |
I voted for Ron, becuase everyone else would wear themselves out actually Swing Dancing |
| |
Hmmm... last marathon dancer left on the floor dancing with him/herself? Or least likely to be voted off each week by the others? Or most likely to eat a rat to stay on the floor? Or the most exhibitionist person willing to let the world look in on a dancer's private life? So many choices... *LOL* |
| |
Most willing to form an alliance against the happy-go-lucky majority? |
| |
I vote off...RON, SHAWN, DENNIS, MELBABAMOOSE, JEFF |
| |
I want immunity from this crap! |
| |

I added a new poll on the decline of swing in San Diego. If I missed a response, I apologize. If you tell me quick I can probably add it before a lot of people vote, and then restart the poll. It was hard to write good general responses that I thought people might pick. I hope people vote appropriately, like once or twice for their favorite one or two responses, instead of multi-voting for the same response. |
| |
That poll is too disheartening to even look at. I almost think the decline right now is "seasonal" as much as anything. Ron, your list is too global and paints a far worse picture than what exists. Plus, the nature of the poll itself on the cover of our website is probably more destructive than the items on your list combined. I'll pass on this poll. |
| |
Ron, Wow! I can't believe it has come to this. It's pretty sad. I agree, that it doesn't look too good on the front page, especially when we tell all of the newbies to check out swingorama when they first come into the scene. Well, at least I do, because that is what I did, and how I got started going to all of the venues. Someone told me to check it out, and so I did, and voiala, here I am. Honestly, I don't think you can have categorized answers to the question you asked. Everyone has their own reasons for not coming out. I myself am a student and have school obligations, otherwise I would be out. Last semester I was out during the entire semester, but this semester is more difficult, more classes. To get to the point, I think that if you honestly want to know the answer to the question make a thread(not that many of the threads aren't already dealing with the exact issue). Putting this question on the front page makes me feel OUCH! |
| |
"Ouch" is right! Good luck with school, Cari. Ace your education. Then, make so much money you can dance whenever, and wherever, you want! |
| |
Hmmm, good feedback. It WAS depressing. Duh. Instead of "Why is the San Diego Scene declining", I'll rephrase the question and responses around growing! |
| |
There, fixed it. How stupid was THAT. It really doesn't matter why things are down, what matters is what can we do about it. And I am curious as to what people think. Unfortunately, the poll will be inherently biased by it being filled out by regulars, not by the beginners we must attract to survive. But what the heck! |
| |
Ok, that's a bit better, not as scary. Thanks for changing it Ron. And as far as my education goes, I'm doing my best to finish as soon as I can. |
| |
You forgot the most important thing...."Better attitudes". |
| |
Duh... the best way to make something GROW is to advertise it.... lets not bicker about the people that are already regulars they will show when and where they will anyhow! I work in sales, and when you want new people in the door you advertise! Word of mouth, tv, newspapers, direct mail, email... Exibitions...people need to see it hear about it feel it |
| |
Gary, What ever happened with the half-page Swing-advertisement in the reader that you were proposing? ![]() |
| |
I got tired of hearing everyone tell me that "thats a great idea... or.. we need that" but they didnt want to pay to advertise. I had written in a way for it to not cost the venue's any money. The problem was that everyone wants to argue over the existing crowd. I was talking about the 150,000+ people that read a very specific weekly publication. I heard from a few interested parties that they would be interested in entertaining the idea, but when I talked to the people with the most interest they couldnt (or didnt) look at the BIGGER picture... namely put the word out to general public not already in the scene! YES this costs money, and advertising is not cheap, but after analysing the costs, and the possible returns I felt it would have been a good thing! I certainly have my tollerance for beating my own head against a wall (and do it quite often), and had I a better feedback it may have gone into a real "print" ad, but alas, I would rather spend my time moving forward, and in a constructive way. I am still interested in taking the dance to the people, but in a different way. Putting it in their faces and letting them see Lindy first hand. I have been thinking about re-creating a "bomb squad" style group that wants to go dance together, in structured times, at locations where we would be welcomed and not run off. If there is anyone interested please contact me, and lets see where THIS idea can go! |

Fun results so far for the new poll, check it out. -Ron "Gallup" Bloom Speaking of signatures, where oh where is Hopmichael? It looks like you cut back on posting like you cut back on your dancing... |

Hi Ron, I just wanted to point out that a major voting choice seems to be left out of your latest poll on the upcoming exchange...... I was looking for the voting option "Because of the great live bands". Something I miss in S.D. and would show up to the exchange for, quality live acts. |
| |
Hi Nancy, I would suspect that the band lineup was announced after he posted the poll! |
| |
Yup! But if I would have been real smart, I could have included that option anyway! oh well... |
| |
It looks like someone is multi-voting for the "getting laid" option! Its passed up the other options. |
| |
Not meeeeeeeeeee |
| |
yeah, I think it's time for a new poll |
| |
I thought I'd wait until after the exchange and have the poll be: "So did you actually get laid?" |
| |
New poll is up, the question is on people's favorite exchange event. |
| |
New poll up. I forget what the breakdown of results were for people's favorite San Diego swing exchange event, the top picks were the bands (except Mora's) and Saturday late-night. For this last poll, the highly scientific results were: So did you really get laid during the recent Swing Exchange? Of course, multiple partners: 27.66% Yes, didn't everyone?: 18.09% No, but I got some nice hugs: 11.70% Yes. OK OK, it was my regular boyfriend/girlfriend: 9.57% Only in my dreams: 8.51% I had a steamy blues dance...: 7.45% I made-out--does that count?: 6.38% Snuggle-partner only: 5.32% I had the situation well in hand: 3.19% We were too tired from all that late-night dancing: 2.13% Total Votes: 94 |
| |
Ah, polls are such silly fun... It's too expensive: 10%!!! yeah, right! Anyone have any suggestions for the next poll? |
| |
"Who should be the organizer for LBtB?" |
| |
Ron, I'm hoping that the question about "the organizer" isn't too popular. Yikes! Hopefully it's just one or two using multiple posts to anonymously sucker punch me rather than actually respond to why MORE people don't come out to a free event that's similar San Francisco's "Lindy in the Park". And, fyi, for those of you who actually won't come out to a FREE swing event, (for those who think it's too expensive), and support the entire scene because you don't like the promoter (me), please realize that Chance and Mel have set up the entire summer schedule, including teachers and DJ's. I have very little to do with it other than just getting the sound equipment there. So please, don't allow any bad feelings you have toward me keep you from dancing. Besides, most promoters are self serving dorks, and I'm no exception. So, get over it. It's FREE, and it's WONDERFUL!! (Just like me, once ya get to know me). |
| |
I wouldn't take the votes for "I don't like the organizer" too seriously, Jeff. ANY organizer would get some votes. Seriously. |
| |
hmm... what about deleting all the negativity... if you focus on the negatives - then people* will try and find fault... now if you focus more on the "favorite" things... you're more likely bring out the positives and rave reviews. *all reference to "people" is a generalization and not to be taken personally nor as an absolute |
| |
I did that for another poll but this one I really was curious about the specific reasons people don't go to Lindy by the Bay more, and so it came out a little negative. I'll do better next time... |
| |
If you ignore what's wrong, or just plain don't know what's wrong, you will never be able to fix it. |
| |
So, Reuben, how did you vote? |
| |
And I do agree, Reuben, that it's good to "know what's wrong" and always attempt to improve. But it's difficult to get any useful information from these Swingorama polls when it's so easy to anonymously "stuff the ballot box" with multiple posts. And the whole "not liking the organizer" for not attending a venue is pretty lame. Many folks who don't like Tami and Erin at PBDA still attend Catalina dances and after dances every year and have a blast!!! They just don't dance with Tami and Erin. And now that Chance is a co-organizer maybe a few more will come out. |
| |
Yes, the ability to vote multiple times will always make the results of swingorama polls null and void, but it's a start. |
| |
Ron, if you want to find out why people don't go what's wrong with a thread (or should that be spool)? |
| |
Maybe that would be like opening Pandora's Box... |
| |
Maybe. Personally if I'm not there it can be one of several reasons: I'm out of town I have stuff I need to do (grocery shopping, etc.) I have stuff I want to do more (something planned with Dan) I have plans for the earlyish evening and the timing's bad If none of the above apply any particular week then I go. |
| |
Nat, most people don't contribute to threads on the forum, most people lurk instead. But everyone contributes to a poll, so the sample size immediately goes from 8 to 50. They are non-scientific, but better than nothing. Also it would probably be more important to get polling data from people who don't read swingorama regularly, but that's the breaks. |
| |
But of course, open discussion on the the topic of Lindy by the Bay is a bonus. That only a few people said that Sat aft. is a bad time I think is a good thing. People will always have other plans on weekends, but Sat. aft is probably the best time for it. What I don't think is good is to have it go from 3 to 8, for example, because then some people come for a couple hours and leave, and its never well attended throughout the whole time. Its best to have a well-defined 2 or 3 hour period, I think. |
| |
Nat, from the input I've been getting from people for the past two years (has it been that long already?) it's pretty much what you stated above. People generally love it when they can make it, but Saturday afternoons are quite easy to fill up with other things. And what prompted the poll was my conversation with Ron about the low attendance last week of only 25 or 30 people. But it was Father's Day weekend and many were involved in graduation ceremonies somewhere. And I don't think that only 2 people showed up for the free lesson with Chance and Mel because of "the organizer". Let's face it. I don't make any money off "Lindy by the Bay"; in fact, it costs me a little each week to keep it going. But people love it and my kids can play at the Hilton and come and go as they please, and so it works nicely into my life. But if I WANTED to make some money, charge a little, and, say ADVERTISE in the Reader or elsewhere we could have tons of people there. I'm just not interested in spending any money on promotion. But the word of the new summer schedule, with free lessons each week at 3pm by all of San Diego's best teachers on a rotating basis, is getting out. I think each week it's going to become more heavily attended. But even when the 25 or 30 show up, instead of 80 or 100, it's still ALOT of fun. It's a venue that attracts the funnest, most positive people in our scene. The "negative" people tend to stay away (all 4 or 5 of them), as they do from most events that take place in San Diego, and so it's always a fun mix of dancers at "Lindy by the Bay". I don't like dancing on concrete. But I've discovered that I personally can dance as long and as easily on the LBtB surface as any floated wood floor. I think it's because the slab at the Hilton is floating on top on a sand base, and the sand we sprinkle down makes it smooth and easy to turn on. Meeshi says it bothers him a little, but I reminded him he usually is sore after LBtB because of the stunts and goofy stuff he attempts, which often end up with him or his partner lying flat on the floor! You see, "Lindy by the Bay" brings out "the kid" in most people, and it makes Meeshi get pretty wild and crazy. |
