SwingOrama Forum: Site suggestions anybody?: Swingorama?

Shawn, how come you are changing the home page address from swingtimesd? What legal issues? What a bummer. That'll change every link to every page.

So, you came up with Swingorama? Gag me.

Shawn,

Since you have to change the name, how about a cool name? Hate to say it, but Swing O Rama sounds Lame O Rama.

Suggestion: Hold a name that site contest! Have everyone send in an idea for the name via e-mail or suggestion slips at dances. The winner gets a prize and you get a cool name for your site!

Post the Name That Site thread under events if you like. Since almost no one except Ron is registered to be updated under the Site Suggestion Thread!

In Shawn's defense, he elicited suggestions from a few of us, unfortunately getting a domain name these days is not that easy- the good one's were taken.

Hey guys, I had basically a day to come up with a new name. Legal threats are no fun! I polled those few people I knew well and responded to email quickly. The team included Ian, Tammy, Meeshi, Aletha, Valerie, Heather, Benno and me.

A consensus was VERY hard to come to. Every name we came up with, somebody didn't like it. Without fail! SwingOrama grabbed all but a couple people's interest. It had the word swing in it and was easy to spell and remember. That's it!

Ron, as to links to pages, it is no worries. I will keep the old site up for a while. It will take a few weeks before everything is working perfectly, and then each existing page on SwingtimeSD.com will automatically redirect to the new site. Simple!

As we discussed Shawn, this whole thing reaks. I don't understand why a dance studio in LA would care about the domain name: swingtimeSD.com

I doubt they would win any case against you.

I started a thread on "Jive Junction" to see if anyone knows anything about this studio, and what their deal is. They seem rather ass-holish so far.

There is a new .__ name out there. Like .com, .org, .net, and now there is .cc

Check out www.spot.cc

Shawn,
The links still look for www.swingtimessd.com.

click on the url above

http://www.swingtimesd.com/discus/messages/127/url
this is what it reads.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 11:56 am: Edit

Chris, there are lots of non-us links. Hundreds in fact. dot.nl,.uk, .au, etc. I just went with one that would not cause any confusion and was simple.

If you want to see the owners of the name, go to:

http://www.SwingtimeDanceStudio.com

Another person who has been threatened:

http://www.SwingtimeDance.com

And the place to check legal ownership of a name:

http://trademarks.uspto.gov/access/search-mark.html

What's done is done.

I can't believe it. Swingtime is so generic, why should they care? And to give you only a short time to switch, what jerks. And you have to pay for the new domain name too, I bet.

Charlie- I don't register to be updated. Who wants to be bombarded by all those e-mails out of context? I just click on new messages. Its the only way to go.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 12:57 pm: Edit

how about:
swingsd.com
sdswing.com
swingdancesd.com
sdswingdance.com
something generic.
or
swingoutsd.com
swingoutsandiego.com
(like chicago)

It is done Ron! Just bask in the glory of SwingOrama and enjoy.

I opted away from the SD (SwingSD) because I wanted to get away from everybody needing the SD spelled or explained. I wanted a word I could use and wouldn't need that kind of attention.

Oh, the forum is not good enough for posting unless you need it for finding Chris. Well aren't we special.

Get over it, you pansy.

I've already discussed why I stopped posting, and it has nothing to do with whether or not the forum is "good enough" for me. It has to do with incessant posting from extremely annoying dolts such as yourself.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 03:24 pm: Edit

Andy, you will be pleased to know that SwingOrama will be free of incessant postings from all extremely annoying dolts! It will be a warm fuzzy place for any and all right thinking swing dancers!

Amen and Hallelujah!

Utopia at last!

Nice concept, how do you propose to see fruition?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 03:37 pm: Edit

Well, Frutopia anyway.

Tell me, I removed the anon feature of the board. Shall I now make all sections "private posting areas" and require all to register? There will still be obnoxious people, but I think that as a whole, the board has been pretty good of late.

What I would really like is for more people to use it for feedback after events and postings under "going dancing" before events. It seems that would be so productive for San Diego dancers. Hmmm.

how do you define "right thinking"?? Ron's thinking...Shawn's thinking...stripey thinking...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Shawn Hanna on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 04:50 pm: Edit

I alone am the judge of Right Thinking. It's simpler that way.

SwingORama sounds like something from a Nick at Nite show. It's actually a good name. Considering almost everything else is taken.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 05:27 pm: Edit

It sounds like an arcade name.

Yuck, blech. Too late, you say. well, I'm vomiting anyway.

C'mon! "Ronald Bloom" could be an odd fungal growth in ones shorts. It's all how you use it, right?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Melbamoose on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 - 01:47 am: Edit

HA HA HA!!! Very funny last comment, Shawn.

Who cares about the name anyways? I mean, do people really ponder it on a regular basis when everyone has it bookmarked anyways?? After reading everyone's reactions, the last one about the Nick at Nite similarity does make sense. I think it's pretty cool. Not that it matters...

The whole legal issue does sound pretty lame though, you'd think that the two dance studios would have issues with eachother, no? Or was everything just directed at this specific site?

Peace out
~Krista

Perfect timing! From Margie's list:

We are publicising the Jan - March 2000 USA
coast-to-coast tour called SWINGTIME! that features the London based Jivin' Lindy Hoppers (6 dancers) with a collection of some of best American jazz musicians (plus one Brit.) known as the New York City Jazz All-Star Orchestra led by Warren Vach. Perhaps the main point to be stressed about the dance side of this production does not consist of a bunch of Broadway style hoofers masquerading as "real" Lindy Hoppers. The JLH are possibly unique in being the only totally full time professional dance company
dedicated to the dance forms of Swing, starting with the Lindy Hop, who genuinely depend on this type of work alone for their survival. And they have been doing this since they turned rofessional in 1987, the company having been founded at the beginning of 1984.
