I was just listening to a broadcast from 1941 by Glenn Miller's band and Glenn announces that "this weeks broadcasts are coming to you from Pacific Square in San Diego."

So, where or what was/is "Pacific Square"?
A ballroom? An civic auditorium?

Does anyone know?

Pacific Square was one of the largest ballrooms in San Diego. It was located on Pacific Coast Highway. Unfortunately, it was torn down in the mid-80's. They did, however, throw a closing party...featuring Tex Beneke Orchestra. Newspapers report that over 1400 people showed up to dance the night away. Too little, too late I guess. There's plenty more info about it in the archives of the San Diego Historical Society.

Solid!
Thanks for the info, Lisa!
Another torn down ballroom..sigh......

That's one good thing about the mid-west...lots of ballrooms till standing..I have a recent book called, "Ballroom Echoes", that has pix and stories about ballrooms all over the USA..and the major amount still standing are all in the midwest.

Any pix of Pacific Square Ballroom in the files?

PS : I am copying your info and posting it to the GM list. Thanks!

You're welcome. All the ballrooms in SD (with the exception of one in El Cajon) were torn down in the late 70s-80s. It's a shame that preservation of beautiful buildings took second to building strip malls in that era.
