George was at Harmony last night with his Make Believe Orchestra. It was wonderful (thank you Heather)! While some might suggest that you have to sell your soul to afford an evening at Harmony, George's ensemble makes it worthwhile. For a more affordable option, buy the CD - it's great (and reviewed in the music section on this site). |

I've only seen him live once, but I loved it. I thought it was much better than the CD, his small band plays more for dancing. |

I saw George Gee in San Francisco at the Broadway Studios. At first I thought it was another wordplay name (like Gee! this band's Make Believe -- not!) The band began playing and they immediately juiced up the dance floor with great tempos. Then in mid-song a trumpeter takes the mike and spells out a long-winded introduction for George. To my surprise out pops out this short Chinese guy with glasses. I'd seen him earlier in the evening as the band was setting up and thought he was either a roadie or a guy who got hired from the neighboring Chinatown. George is wearing a fedora and a suit that drapes over his small frame. Still he starts leading the band with a lit up fury. He punctuates the breaks with jumps, claps, punches, hat-grabbing down to his ears: anything to cajole that band to keep the searing hot beat. First I laughed, then I was in awe, now I revere the man for his music and stage personality! |
