Hey, local dj's, please start playing more of Jimmie Lunceford. Man did his band kick major butt back in the swing era. Any other swing music lovers have a favorite Lunceford tune? Here's a couple of mine - Rhythm Is Our Business Since My Best Girl Turned Me Down Organ Grinder's Swing Annie Laurie |

Don't forget the HUGE standard "For Dancers Only." My favorite of all time is "Stratosphere," but it is not for the faint of heart. High tempos, changing tempos, changing ryhthms and kettle drums set this one apart from all others. You should hear Mora play "Stratosphere" live, though it's just not the same without the kettles. |

Yeah, unfortunately, that and "T'aint What you Do" are usually the only Lunceford tune most dj's have or ever heard, when Lunceford recorded so many great dance tunes. I'll look for the Stratosphere tune. How bout - The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down, Baby won't you please come home, Well All right then and Stomp if Off. Have you played Posin' while dj'ing? |
| |
Posin' has a little bit of, um, bad reputation. hee hee hee... so I personally only play it every great once in a while, and it's usually cause we'd be joking around. Just checked my collection and I have 113 unique Lunceford sides. Me lika the Lunceford. |

I love "well All right then" in fact I have a tape I made while in High School with a bunch of swing music on it. I was too lazy to actually write down who the artist were since I had to transfer the music form vinly to cassette and the musuem wanted the record back the next day, and I totally forgot who the music was by. Anyways, "Well alright then" was one of the songs. Well, now I know one version to keep my eyes out for. |

Amen, brother. Also, howz about Fletcher Henderson? I'd love to hear more of his band, too. Especially when Coleman Hawkins was playing with him. |

No Andy, this thread is for underplayed Mr. Lunceford. Come on Andy, there's got to be at least one Lunceford tune of his that you dig? Coquette? Hey Tony, glad you found out who wrote that song. Pretty funky tune, yet not quite as hookie as some of Cab Calloway's hootin songs. Incredible how much musical education Lunceford had for his time, yet his music is so creative and fun to listen to. |

i'm nuts about crazy music |

Jimmie gets me all weak in the knees. I'll be playing a few of his tunes this Saturday, including Coquette. drool... |
