How could we get Pete Jacobs to come to San Diego? |
| |
Pete- The legal issues went away a while back. Its the lack of paying customers that made the Rocket stop having bands.. I'm not sure where you could play. Tio-Leos gets a lot of swing bands, but mostly the neo-swing stuff. And you probably couldn't fit. Eddie Reed's small band fits. The whole place is small. Other than that, I'm not sure. No one does large swing events regularly down here. Indigo Swing played a special event at San Diego State once. Let me ask around, actually, let me put it up for public discussion on our forum site: http://www.swingtimesd.com/discus/ -Ron From: WRRSwing@aol.com To: rjbloom@hotmail.com Subject: Re: New Swing CD Review Site Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 11:31:11 EDT Thank you for reviewing our album. Hopefully, there will be a lot more coming from the band. And I hope we can get down your way a little more. What are the current venues that might be able to have a band of our size? (15-piece band). We had played at "The Rocket" a few times, but with all the legal problems going on with the city, it seems like they have fallen on hard times. Is anyone doing any of the large swing events? What about Hop Star? Are they still putting on events? Sincerely, -Pete Jacobs (949) 559-0894 voice www.wartimeradio.com |

Has the legal issue been resolved?? I was under the impression that the mayor was not going to support revoking it and that the rocket allowed minors at its peril. |

From what Allan, the previous manager, told me, the city stopped enforcing it and will probably continue to not enforce it, because of all the bad publicity they got the last time they tried. They didn't want to revoke the law because it is useful in other situations, I forget the details, but basically there was no way to differentiate an all-ages swing club under the law, but that, in practice, there's no problem with the Rocket. So the solution was selective enforcement. Wierd, huh? I remember there was this all-ages club in Seattle where people would drink before they went in, there were fights frequently, cops called frequently, etc. I guess "swing kids" aren't much trouble, in comparison... |

I guess I haven't kept up with the info about this law...So, what's all the hub bub about? Hopefully, it's all over with...Thanks! |

The whole age issue kind of blew over a while back but I think the deal in the end was that kids must be accompanied by a responsible adult and have to have a signed note from their folks. At least thats what the little city codes papers said. |

But anyway, back to my main point, why don't we have any large venues? I'd like to see Pete Jacobs here... |

Lack of alcohol consumption is what the local owners/promoters keep telling us. |
