I know this is not politically correct, (no Hanukkah or Zwanza songs) but I thought I would get peoples opinions on their favorite Christmas Swing CD's. I, of course prefer the ones with classic 30's-50's recording. So far here are the two I've found that I like the best. Has anyone found anything else??? "a 1940's Christmas" on Laserlight Digital by Stanyan Records 1995 "Yule B' Swingin'" Hip-O Records 1998 Universal Music Company Both of these have really swinging stuff from the likes of Glenn Miller, Ella, Les Brown, Kay Starr,Goodman, Dorsey, Lena Horne, Lionel Hampton and more! |
| |
Ella Fitzgerald "wishes you a swingin Christmas!" is my favorite. I want to get a couple more, though, so I asked the same question on a swing DJs mailing list! I'll forward the answers here later.. My review of the above CD: http://www.swingtimesd.com/music/ronsreviews.html#Wishes You a Swinging Christmas Or if your browser doesn't take the stuff after the #, just look under F for Fitzgerald. |
| |
I love Ella's CD too, Ron, although admittedly that's the only Christmas swing CD I have! |
| |
FYI - Cosco has three three-cd Christmas Swing CDs. Each set is only $6.99. If you like the style, you can't beat the price! |
| |
Can't seem to find The Benny Goodman Hanukkah swing CD anywhere :( Nothing beats Klezmere music. |
| |
I've got the Count Basie Ramadan/Kwanza compendium if anybody is interested. |
| |
Tammy, I got the Yule B Swingin CD, and it is really good!! |
| |
Hey, is that Erik & Sylvia on the cover of Yule B Swingin? |
| |
You bet it is! In their favorite pose. :) It's a GREAT CD too!! Louis Prima must have been young in that recording. His voice is so different. I love so many of the cuts on it. Nice tempos from Louis Armstrong and Les Brown. And Ella's almost sultry rendition of "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is really fun to blues dance to. |
| |
Cool, huh. Another one you might like, Ron, is Blue Yule. It's about my third or fourth fav Xmas CD. It's got quite a few jump blues numbers. Here's a couple of the featured artists: Roy Milton Louis Jordan Lightening Hopkins Big Jack Johnson There's 18 tracks in all. Some of it is too jazzy for me, but I know our tastes differ so you may like it even more than I!!!! |
| |
Cool Yule Swing tunes : Woody Herman Ork circa 1943/44 doing "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" on two sides of a Decca 78 rpm record. King Sisters with Alvino Rey Ork in 1941 doing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" on Bluebird. The reverse side was "Jingle Bells" by Glenn Miller Ork. |
| |
Disneys Swinging Christmas is tops on my list!! |
| |
Ian, I can't find that on Amazon.com. Are you sure that's the name, and is it a current CD? But really, I shouldn't buy many more Christmas swing CDs. I mean, talk about a limited sub-sub genre of music. |
| |
I saw it in the Disne store. Don't remember the exact title. I'll find out. |

I bought the 3 CD Time-Life Treasury of Christmas collection. It just happens to have a couple of swing tunes on it, like "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" Brenda Lee, which I played on Saturday at the Marriott. I also bought the Blue's Jumpers "Swingin Holiday" CD which isn't that great, but I like a couple songs on there. I bought the Swingin Christmas modern swing compilation. Its better for those who like modern swing. It has songs by Ron Sunshine, Swingtips, Set 'em up Joe, Heavenly 7, and the Flipped Fedoras. I only like the Ron Sunshine songs. There's a good danceable "Merry Christmas Baby" which I also think I played Saturday. Not really a Christmas CD, but: I also bought the soundtrack from Toy Story 2 and played the swing song "You've Got a Friend In Me"! A great song from a great movie. Robert Goulet sings this version, and it plays in the final credits, so you can dance your way up the aisle as you leave.. And I bought the Mr Grinch soundtrack. The song is pretty tough to dance to, and I forgot to play it Saturday, but I'll get to it. The Ella Fitzgerald and the Yule B Swinging CDs are very much the best still! I think I won't be buying anymore Christmas CDs.. they are only good for about 3 or 4 weeks a year! The $$ spent per # of times played ratio is bad! Yet another sacrifice this poor, underappreciated DJ makes to bring the San Diego swing community the best swing music. |
| |
You "bring the San Diego swing community the best swing music?" No wonder you guys are having trouble keeping your venues full. |
| |
Yes I do, and our venues have been doing fairly well, recently, thank you. |
| |
Thats a theory. |
| |
P.S... I'm just giving you a hard time Ron, don't take me too seriously. However, one should never make such a statement as fact (ex: I bring San Diego the BEST swing music) when in fact it is only an opinion. And, opinions about ones own self rarly hold any weight at all. For example, if someone were to say, "I think Ron proves the best swing music to our scene." I would give that more merit then you saying it about yourself. Ya dig? |
| |
Hey Ron, you might want to go see a doctor about the swelled head. I think it could burst any minute.... |
| |
Don't get overly excited, don't take my it for more than it meant to be. Let me restate the original statement with all the proper caveats and exceptions in order not to offend. I spend a lot of time and $ to buying and reviewing what I think is some of the best swing music out there, as does Dennis and others, to be able to bring great music to the San Diego swing scene! We hope you appreciate our effort! |
| |
and as for you Reuben, maybe you'd be happy with an opinion stated about someone else. Let me try. I think Reuben supplies the least funny, least friendly, least useful posts on this forum. And that he often says "oh, don't take me so seriously" is equally inane. |
| |
Pot to kettle, your black!! |
| |
Thank you for the compliments Ron. ;) |
| |
Your cool in my book, man. Keep posting! And keep me laughing! (:P) |
| |
I'll try my best. :l |
