Andi,

Has Chris asked you to plug Break Away on your show? It's an all ages place up in North County (see his posts for details).

The more publicity for this place, the better your dancing listeners will benefit!

Thanks,

HopMichael

Hey all! Fun stuff tonight on Jumpin' Like Mad! I'm giving away tickets for the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association's Spring Swing Festival Dinner Dance (I think that is the longest title for an event I've ever seen!) Big Time Operator is playing, it's this coming Friday, and it's at the Mississippi Ballroom- should be a fun night!

Also, Bill Elliott has sent out a very special recording, live at the Hollywood Palladium, for DJ's and radio airplay only. Tonight I'll play the first of four segmnets- it's excellent, so be sure to tune in!

Next week promises to be great too- Bill Elliott live at the Palladium Parrt 2, an interview with James Darren (singer turned actor (Gidget, Star Trek the Next Generation, etc.), turned singer!), plus, I'll be giving away tickets to Keely Smith's ONE AND ONLY Southern California show, May 24th at the House of Blues in Hollywood!

Hope you'll join me for Jumpin' Like Mad! Saturdays from 6 to midnight on AM 1360 KPOP!

FROM ANDI

Hey everybody! Lots of great music in store tonight! First of all, many birthdays over the past week will be celebrated tonight in our
7pm Birthday Hour: Fats Waller, Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell, Artie Shaw, Frankie Manning, Peggy Lee, and Al Jolson!

Also on tap for the evening: at 7pm we'll do the Jumpin' News, 8pm is the Wall To Wall Request Hour, at 9pm we'll play the final episode
of the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra live at the Hollywood Palladium Show, and at 10pm
it's the ½ Hour Sock Hop. You know, that's the only place on San Diego radio where you can hear good old fashioned 50's rock & roll! We've
got a few new old tunes to throw in tonight...

As you know, Wednesday Keely Smith played her only Southern California tour date at the House of Blues, and Alex and I were there. Tune in
to hear details. Also, very shortly our website will be updated with new photos from that evening, as well as photos from Lavay Smith at the Cannibal Bar, and Big Time Operator at the Boulevard Swing Dinner Dance. Check it out at
http://www.jumpinlikemad.com

And as always, the best modern and classic big band, jump blues, early rock & roll and rockabilly, western swing, jazz, lounge, boogie
woogie and swing!

If you have requests, call us at 570-1360 or 1-877-5-JUMPIN.

See you on the Radio- Jumpin' Like Mad, tonight from 6 to midnight on AM 1360 KPOP!

Andi's a sweetheart!

She honors requests. So I'm often listening to her show while I'm driving up to Breakaway on Saturday evenings (hint, hint).

Not too shabby a dancer either.

So for all the Saturday night shut-ins, her show is a great music link to the swing world.

"Too bad all the music she plays sucks, and rambles on like she is some music encyclopedia about music she knows nothing about."

Anybody know who this "JimmyCrackCorn" guy is? Does he realize I actually do read this forum and that he's being *extremely* rude? Guess he does now, eh? ;-) Hey Jimmy, do me a favor and rather than insult me on a public forum like this, why not give me some suggestions of what you'd like to hear since "all the music I play sucks." (Guess that means you're not a fan of Lavay, Bill Elliott, etc... who's the one with bad taste then??) Music encyclopedia about music I know nothing about? Kind of an oxymoron, ain't it?? Grow up.

Shawn and Michael, thanks for backing me up.

Everybody, if there is something you want to hear or if you have a suggestion, I make it more than clear that I'm always open to them- the polite ones, anyway. Email me at andi@jumpinlikemad.com or call me at 1-877-5-JUMPIN.

Jimmy, that includes even you!

Hey, Andi, were you the one that recommended that Travelin Light Peggy Lee CD? If so, thanks, its great! Sweet mellow swing.

Andi, I must admit that I've never listened to your show but, here, here, well said. People who think it's acceptable to be off the cuff rude to someone they've never met are wrong, wrong, wrong. I bet half of them wouldn't have the guts to say it to the person's face.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Andi on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 - 03:52 pm: Edit

Thanks Ron and Natalie... I appreciate your coming to my defense. I make a point to try play lots of different types of music on the show, since everyone has different tastes. I don't expect everyone to like all of it, but I also hope they don't hate it! ;-)

The radio station has also put some constraints on me, asking me to keep things primarily KPOP-ish between 6-8pm. Some of the older, core KPOP listeners get kind of upset if they don't recognize most of the songs they hear!

And Ron, I'm not sure, but I don't think I can take credit for the Peggy Lee CD- but hey, if nobody else does I will ;-) Glad to hear some folks do enjoy the standards that swing- I've always loved the Peggy Lees, Frank Sinatras and Bobby Darins of the world, but others don't consider it good to dance to.

Thanks again everybody. And again, I will be the first to admit I don't know everything that's out there, so help me out with some suggestions if you'd care to. We play big band, jump blues, early rock & roll and rockabilly, western swing, jazz, lounge, boogie woogie and swing, and we always love to expand our playlist!

PS- My cohost and I went and saw Sam Butera at Viejas last night, and I had a chance to interview him- what a legend! It'll air this coming Saturday!

John, are you even in San Diego County? Can you even hear the show?

As I said, I can't please everyone.

And PS, doesn't "jazz" actually include choices 1, 8, and 9? No need to start a debate here, just clarifying...

Ah, I'm not very into Sinatra or Darin, but the old Peggy Lee stuff I'm talking about is jazzy, not loungey.

Good for you for playing a diverse range of music. That's what I like to do, too.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By John P. Cooper on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 - 08:04 pm: Edit

Andi,
I am not in San Diego, but you asked for input.

And not to get into a debate, but lots of big band music is not swing or jazz, and lots of jazz is not swing.

Boogie Woogie is a jazz piano form, sometimes played by small groups and big bands as well.

Ron's definition of variety:

alternating between a 100 bpm jazzy song from the 50's and a 100 bpm jazzy song from the 60's

Now I'm getting ragged on for playing jazzy stuff, not pop swing! Cool!! By the way, I rarely play a 100 bpm song, too slow to Lindy, a bit too fast for blues. Nice try, though.

Well, by reading this and a few of the other discussions on music, dancing, and preferences, I can see that few of the people that post here agree with each other on... well, much of anything.

Tastes being as subjective as they are, I think I'll leave well enough alone with my radio show. I get comments from folks every day about it. They love it. They hate it. They like one type, some types, or all types of music that I play. They love the big band and hate the rockabilly. They love the rockabilly and hate the big band. They don't like that I mix it up. They love that I mix it up. They love all the information I give. They wish I'd shut up. They love the fact that they can hear 50's rock and roll at 10pm during the Half Hour Sock Hop, since no other commercial radio station in San Diego plays that music. They ask me to play the Troggs (I didn't.) Point is, as long as they're talking about it, and enjoying some part of it- if not all of it (because yes, we do have listeners that are that open minded), that's the best I can hope for.

If you hate the show and don't think anyone should ever listen to it, tell everyone you know- but make sure you get the info right, that's "Jumpin' Like Mad," Saturday Nights from 6 to midnight on AM 1360 KPOP in San Diego. Just to be sure they *know* what NOT to listen to. Go on, tell 'em! ;-)

As for suggestions, I suppose I should have made my point more clearly, even though I thought it was obvious: The format of "Jumpin' Like Mad" is what it is. If that's not to your liking, then obviously the show's not for you. Within the styles that I mentioned, we are always open to song or artist suggestions, feature suggestions, etc. But as the old saying goes, we don't "narrowcast," we "broadcast."

Our show is for San Diego swing dancers (of all kinds, not just any one group of dancers), and for listeners that enjoy a wide mix of upbeat music from the 30's, 40's and 50's. We fill a void in San Diego radio- several actually, because much of this music you cannot hear anyplace else. Again, if that's not what you're into, then this show's not for you- and it won't ever be.

Understand, this isn't an effort to start any sort of debate or argument, it's just an explanation. That way people can listen if this sounds appealing to them, or stay away from it if it doesn't. All I ask is that you respect me and my co-host Alex for what we're doing, as it takes a lot of hard work every week to put together 6 hours of information, entertainmnet, giveaways, interviews, and a strong mix of music. If you listen and like what we do, let us know. Tell us what you like. Be a part of the process. If you don't like it, don't listen- but still give us the respect we deserve.

Thank you,

Andi

Hello friends and listeners. We've got a bit of sad news on Jumpin' Like Mad tomorrow, the loss of both Tex Beneke and Tito Puente in the past week. Tomorrow night on the show we'll do celebrations of the lives of both of these great artists, as they will be sorely missed. If you have any songs you would like to hear in their honor, call us at 1-877-5-JUMPIN and if we have it, we'll play it for you.

We intend to have some fun on the show tomorrow as well- as you know, at 7pm we'll do the Jumpin' News and 8pm is the Wall To Wall Request Hour. Call us at 1-877-5-JUMPIN or in studio at 570-1360 and tell us what you want to hear! Also, Alex and I had the pleasure of seeing Sam Butera perform this week, and I was able to interview him after the show. Listen at 9 o'clock for that. At 10pm it's the ½ Hour Sock Hop, quickly becoming one of the most popular features on Jumpin' Like Mad. You know, that's the only place on San Diego radio where you can hear good old fashioned 50's rock & roll!

I know, I keep promising the website will be updated- we're still working on it! Keep checking, there will be some great new photos up in the very near future. http://www.jumpinlikemad.com

Every Sautrday night Alex and I work hard to bring you the best modern and classic big band, jump blues, early rock & roll and rockabilly, western swing, jazz, lounge, boogie woogie and swing! We know this blend of music isn't right for everybody, but we sure do appreciate those of you who listen and love the show and give us such great positive feedback. Don't forget if you have any comments, questions, suggestions, or requests, you can *always* call the toll free, 24 hour Jumpin' Like Mad Hotline at 1-877-5-JUMPIN and speak up- make the show as much yours as it is ours, that's why we do it!

Man, what a show we've got planned for tomorrow night! As the week has progressed we've just gotten more and more stuff to use on "Jumpin' Like Mad"!

First of all, starting tomorrow we'll be giving away tickets for the Del Mar Fair! Listen all night for those... and actually, be sure to start listening to JLM right at the beginning at 6pm to hear the Jumpin' Joints, where we'll tell you where to dance and who to see for the next week! Also at 7pm we'll be talking with Big Sandy on the telephone- don't forget Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys will be playing at the Casbah on June 23! Because of the interview, we'll be bumping the Jumpin' News to 7:30, after which we'll do a James Darren Birthday Celebration- everybody's favorite holographic lounge singer turned 64 yesterday!

At 8pm it's everybody's favorite, the Wall to Wall Request Hour- that's your opportunity to program the show, so call in the requests at 1-877-5-JUMPIN, or 570-1360 during the show. At 9pm we'll do a tribute to Adolf Hofner, a western swing legend who passed away earlier this week. Then at 10 it's the Half Hour Sock Hop, the only place on San Diego radio where you can hear great 50's Rock and Roll! Call in your requests for that one too! This week and next we'll have a special little extra during the Sock Hop, we've got reserved seats to give away for Little Richard at the Fair June 20th- all you've gotta do is listen for a Little Richard tune and be caller 4 at 570-1360!

Then at 11pm we're introducing a special new feature, The Producer's Hour! It's Alex G's chance to take over and flex his musical muscle, so to speak ;-) I'm sure he won't mind if you call in and harass him, praise him, make requests, or just say hi!

On a final note, if you haven't visited the Jumpin' Like Mad webpage lately, go check it out! We've put up a bunch of new photos from the past month or so- email us and tell us what you think! Go to http://www.jumpinlikemad.com , click on "The Show," then on "Photos."

As you can see, we've got lots in store! So join us tomorrow from 6 to midnight for The Best Modern and Classic Big Band, Jump Blues,
Early Rock and Roll and Rockabilly, Western Swing, Jazz, Lounge, Boogie Woogie and Swing, on Jumpin' Like Mad!!

Thanks a lot!

Andi & Alex G.

Andi,

I caught your recorded interview with Peggy Cone and the Central Park Stompers this past Saturday evening.

Hey, they sound great! She has a Lavay Smithesque sound; her horn section sounds excellent. Great moderate tempos.

Is she touring for her new album (Bad Girl Shoes - seriously suggestive lyrics, I might add.)? I think the dancers would like them a lot.

Hey Michael! Thanks for listening! I really enjoyed her music as well. She was a fun interview- she's got a really over the top personality! It looks like at this point she is playing the NY area a LOT over the next couple of months, but she said they were going to try to make it out to CA at some point. As soon as I hear something about it, I'll let you all know! In the meantime, if you haven't had a chance to listen to her, "Bad Girl Shoes," as well as her previous two CD's, are available at amazon.com!

See you on the Radio this Saturday night!

Hey all- Alex and I will both be back on the air on the 15th- back to full strength! Obviously we'll have plenty to talk about, Hootenanny on 7/1 was a great show! I've gotten some good feedback on the Peggy Cone interview from when I was in New York that Alex aired last weekend- glad you all enjoyed it! Check her out at www.peggycone.com , and be sure to let us know if you have suggestions for other people you'd like to hear from or about!

We've got some upsetting news on the JLM front... yesterday morning Alex G's truck was broken into, right in front of his house near University Ave. and the I 805. His backpack was stolen, and in it was his entire book of CD's- ALL of the jump blues, swing, rockabilly and western swing music he owned and used for the Reverend Alex G Rockabilly Sermon on KSDT and for Jumpin'
Like Mad. Many of these were rare, out of print, or hard to find. A few of them were on loan to him from friends. Since none of these CD's were in
jewel cases, the thief will probably not even be able to sell them- which means it's pretty likely that Alex's livelihood will end up in the trash
somewhere. If anyone knows anything about this, saw or heard anything, or happens to come across a black 200 CD carrying case with a lot of rockabilly and western swing music in it, please contact one of us first at andi@jumpinlikemad.com or alexg@jumpinlikemad.com , then please call the
police! We know it's not likely that these CD's will be recovered, but we hope the chances will be increased if we spread the word among our
music-loving listeners and friends.

That's all for now- thanks for your support!

Shawn, anywhere on your entire website does it say anything about this forum being for posts about swing and big band music only? Didn't think so.

Hey Clod- too bad you're a coward and you have to hide behind anonymity to stand up for your tastes and opinions. The majority of the rest of us care enough about the music we listen to (or play) that we allow our names and personalities to be associated with our opinions on the music - even if it means being blasted by rude, juvenile cowards like you. I may not agree with the opinions of many of the people on this forum, but at least we can all respect one another for having the balls to stand up for ourselves. You on the other hand, obviously have none of that testicular fortitude.*

I never claimed the Comets are swing, and I'm sure you know better than to think that I don't know the difference. As has been discussed previously on this forum, on my radio show, and anywhere else I have to freaking defend myself against people like you, I never claimed to play swing-music-for-lindy-hoppers only. My show is about enjoying music- many different kinds- it's not just about dancing. And if that's not your preference, then for the last time don't listen to the show and leave me and the others who are openminded enough to appreciate and enjoy a wider range of variety THE HELL ALONE. I get enough comments every week from people telling me how much they love the variety of music we play, or how every Saturday night they wait for one particular feature (usually the Half Hour Sock Hop. Oh no! Fifties rock & roll! What will you do, Clod??) to make it worth while to continue doing just exactly what I'm doing.

Congrats to Hop Michael and Shawn Hanna, they'll be going to see the Comets at the Cannibal Bar courtesy of Jumpin' Like Mad. And I'm sure they'll have a great time, since that is, after all, the point.

Folks, be sure to tune in this Saturday, we'll have tickets to give away to see the Brian Setzer Orchestra at the Open Air Theatre on August 6th. Be warned, this venue does not allow dancing if they can help it. You might just have to sit (or stand) and enjoy the music and the show. I believe wiggling in one place, pumping your arms and singing along at the top of your lungs is, however, allowed.

Well Aloha! Andi here, I've returned from my Hawaii vacation with plenty of stories to tell, lots of good music to play, and some new things!

The Jumpin' Like Mad webpage http://www.jumpinlikemad.com has been updated- my personal page now includes the highlights of my Hawaii trip- we'll have photos from Hawaii up soon too! Keep in mind, if you have any comments, questions, suggestions, or requests, or if you missed something on Jumpin' Like Mad, you can always check the webpage- the playlist is posted every week, and soon we're hoping to have the entire website (playlists and all) archived and searchable!

Capitol has released some great new collections that we'll be sampling this week: The Capitol From the Vaults Collection (which includes Ella Mae Morse, Ray McKinley, Benny Goodman, and a whole bunch of others), plus the new Nat King Cole Collection from the Songbook Series. One of the Nat King Cole CD's is called "Rockin' Boppin' & Blues," it's amazing, and we have copies of it to give away!

Other new stuff on tap this week on Jumpin' Like Mad: Susannah McCorkle's new CD, "Hearts and Minds," a little taste of next week's Artist Spotlight on Chicago's Four Charms and their new CD "Flatland Boogie," plus some new music from the Horton Brothers!

At 9pm, Lazy John, the San Diego correspondent for http://www.rumblejoint.com will be our in studio guest!

For links to all of these CD's and other cool stuff, just visit http://www.jumpinlikemad.com!

See you this Saturday night from 6 to midnight on Jumpin' Like Mad!

This is an excellent band, so be sure you don't miss our spotlight! Thanks to my co-host Alex G, at 9pm the boys from Cave Catt Sammy will be in studio to talk about their upcoming CD. They'll only be with us for a few minutes on their way to their gig at Tio Leo's! They're a great young rockabilly band, so we hope you'll give 'em a listen! Thanks, and we'll see you on the radio tonight!

To All of Our Friends:

It is somewhat bittersweet for me to announce my decision to end the Jumpin’ Like Mad Radio Show. Sunday, February 4, 2001 from 6pm to midnight will be our final show. I want to thank everyone who has been involved:

-All of the bands, record companies, clubs, businesses, and members of the media that have been a part of my show and who have supported it for the past three years. Thank you so much. Obviously, there would have been no show without all of you.

-Everyone on the AM 1360 KPOP staff, especially Kevin Taylor and Jeff Williams, for believing in my vision and giving me the freedom to make the show what it has been. It is my hope that Jumpin’ Like Mad (and Jump Jive an’ Wail before it) will be remembered for being one of the only radio shows of it’s kind in San Diego- not only because of the variety of music we played, but also because of the fact that KPOP never imposed any kind of restrictions upon us. KPOP should be commended for allowing us to self-program in an era where that just doesn’t happen anymore. We thank you.

-Huge thanks go to the three men who have shared this show with me and who have shared my love for it. First of all, my husband Dean- he has been more a part of Jumpin’ Like Mad than anyone could possibly realize, and I owe him a lot for that. Thank you, d’. Thank you to Sam Kobliska, my first producer and co-host, who was absolutely great with listeners, callers, and bands, and who took exceptionally good care of me every Saturday night. Thanks, Sam. I’m sorry things turned out like they did, and I hope I hear from you soon. And finally to my producer and co-host for the past year, Alex Gonzales- the Reverend Alex G. Above anyone, Alex has shared my passion for this music. Thank you so much, Alex, for everything you brought to Jumpin’ Like Mad. You have been absolutely invaluable and it has been a pleasure to share the air with you. I wish you the best of luck. You have become a great friend, and I hope we can maintain that friendship.

-Above all, thank you to all of the people who have listened to Jumpin’ Like Mad- whether it was just once or whether you listened every single week, the whole point of the show was you. Your positive feedback, knowing that you enjoyed what we did enough to listen, was what made the show worthwhile. There simply isn’t an adequate way to tell you how much we appreciate you. Please accept our thanks.

Before anyone asks, this is 100% my decision- KPOP is not taking us off the air, they didn’t ask us to do anything differently. Everyone knows what it’s like to devote so much time and energy to something you love that you end up getting burned out on it- that’s what has happened to me. In addition, I have a number of other projects I want to focus my time and energy on- my freelance voice over business, buying and fixing up a house, and going back to school are just a few of them. I appreciate your understanding, and again, I thank you for listening.

Please keep Jumpin’ Like Mad music close to your heart, as we will- it really is the best music ever recorded, all of it. And please continue to go out and support the groups that play this music for us here in San Diego and across the country- these bands really work their asses off for us and they deserve our support.

In the meantime, there are four more Jumpin’ Like Mad shows. Let’s all enjoy ‘em, shall we?

Thanks Again,

ANDI

Andy, your show will be greatly missed. When you were on Saturday nights, Shawn and I always listened during our drive up from North county.

I've really enjoyed Andi's show. The only challenge is figuring out which artists perform the many songs she has introduced to me!

Andi has been a great supporter of the music I love. I will miss the show very much and wish her the very best for the future.

Thank you Andi!

Thank you all very much for the kind words. I really appreciate all of your thoughts!

On a happy note, I'm buying a house!! We're in escrow on a beautiful 2000 sq ft house on half an acre, built in 1946!! Wish us luck, and here's hoping that it all goes thru without a hitch...

Thank you all, again, for supportng Jumpin' Like Mad. And Shawn, if you need help identifying artists of songs you like, you know my email address ;-)

Thank you.
