Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers

Come on out and celebrate the new CD,"Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing" at the CD release parties from 3/16 - 3/19. Lavay (and the band) will be signing copies. This "red hot" CD will be in all records stores on March 14, 2000.

Incorporating a variety of classic American musical styles, including swing, bebop, salsa, jump blues, Tin Pan Alley, and New Orleans R&B, "Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing" includes six outstanding original tunes, many
classics, and several obscure gems. Enlisting the arranging talents of David Berger,
arranger for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Lavay and her 10-piece band have produced an album that is great for both dancing and listening.

Ron,

Did you get an advance copy of the CD? How's it sound? Please play it at the Firehouse or Marriott. Can hardly wait to hear how it sounds!

Nope. It might be too early for that. But I'll look into it. It doesn't sound like its out for real until 3/14. I'm excited to hear it too!

Chris Siebert is an underappreciated pianist. If you can ignore the horns and Lavay's vocals, listen to the boogie-woogie piano playing on their CD "One-Hour Mama."

From the opening bars of Oo-Poppa-do and through all the bluesy/jump-blues numbers, Siebert sets a great rhythm section all by himself. His left hand is strolling through the blues chord progression with such a low bass that it's almost subliminal. His right hand is dancing across the keys and sets up great riffs with which to respond to the rest of the band. He has a great sense of "hang" time for syncopation that provides the great source of tension seen in the swing/blues/jazz genre.

I used to like listening to that CD mainly for its danceable numbers; now I listen to it to appreciate some amazing piano playing. I encourage everyone to take a listen to his piano playing.

I look forward to his performance on his band's upcoming CD!

So maybe this is why jazz records don't sell...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Film critic Rex Reed was arrested Saturday after he was allegedly caught shoplifting three compact discs from a Tower Records store, police said.

A security officer at the store watched Reed, a columnist for the New York Observer, remove the CDs, which were by artists Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Carmen McRae, police said.

Reed, 61, allegedly put the CDs in his jacket pocket and tried to leave the store without paying for them. Store security officials stopped Reed and called police.

Reed was charged with larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and is due in court in March. He was released on his own recognizance.

Reed did not return a telephone call seeking comment late Saturday.

that is too bizarre.

when did this take place?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Reuben Brown on Thursday, February 17, 2000 - 12:55 pm: Edit

It was later found the Rex Reed had escaped from a drug rehab center the night before. This explains why he tried to steal Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Carmen McRae albums, which otherwise would contine collecting dust on Tower's shelves. The store manager has dropped all charges, thanking Reed for ridding them of the unneed inventory.

Hi all- I'm new to the message boards, but hopefully most of you know me anyway- I host Jumpin' Like Mad Saturday nights from 6 to midnight on KPOP. I was just browsing, and found this message:

HopMichael (Mhwang) said: "Chris Siebert is an underappreciated pianist. If you can ignore the horns and Lavay's vocals, listen to the boogie-woogie piano playing on their CD "One-Hour Mama."

I completely agree- Chris Siebert is one of the best piano players I've ever heard. But I gotta ask, when you say "if you can ignore the horns and Lavay's vocals" do you mean just for the sake of focusing on the piano playing? Or do you say it because you don't like the horns and vocals? Just curious- I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything but good about that entire band!

Anyway, hope to become a more regular poster here- and if there's is something you want to hear or want announced on the show, just lemme know!

Hi, Andi!

Sorry if that came off that way. e-mail & discussion boards often can give the wrong impression.

I LOVE Lavay's vocals. She has a great way of "hanging" just off beat just like Billie Holiday. It's perfect for the bluesy, jazzy pieces her band does.

And the horn section of the Red Hot Skillet Lickers is made up of veteran players who have the years of experience to give their playing character. It's not just about hot blowing loud and fast.

So back to my original post: what I meant was for the interested listener to try to concentrate on Chris Siebert's piano playing. Sometimes in dance music, we dancers don't listen to some of the great subtle stuff that's going on in the softer registers.

Keep on swingin', Andi!

Well, Lavay Smith put on a great show at cafe DeNoir on Friday nite. Bunch of great new tunes, some of which Ron has already played, but they sound much better live. I didn't even have the desire to dance, I just enjoyed watching her sing and listening to her great jazz band. Great musicians and soloists.

I spoke with her briefly after the first set, (very friendly) and she said she is booked at the Catamaran, first week of May. Yeah!!

As to the rest of dancing in San Francisco, friendly dancers, but interesting music, and slow tempos. Seemed like I was attending an improv jazz dance workshop. One set of music had the Pink Panther followed by the Star Wars theme song. hmmmm.

3. Lavay Smith in the Press

We would like to thank our publicist Mark Pucci, as well as
Jill
Kettles, for helping to spread the word about our new album.
Many, many
publications around the country have written about us in the
past few
months, including Billboard, Living Blues, and Tower Pulse. You
can read
about the band and the new CD in the current issues of Downbeat,
Blues
Revue Magazine, and the Record Convention News. Look for a
backstage
interview with Lavay and Chris in the August issue of Downbeat
as well.
________________________________________________________________________________
4. Fat Notes from Lavay and the Band

We're in a great mood because we just came home from our
friends
house, Chris Morano and Jimmy Jarrett, who threw a great dinner
party. The
guest of honor was the legendary, one and only Hadda Brooks, one
of our
very favorite singers and piano players. Hadda is 83, and still
sings and
plays her butt off, and entertained us all night with great
stories and
songs-she is an inspiration, and one of our idols. If you don't
have any
of her music, run out and get her CDs-there are several
available, and they
are all great! Thanks to Chris, Jimmy, and Hadda for being so
gracious.
We're just catching our breath before we hit the road again,
but we
had a wonderful time on our June tour. We travelled to some of
the best
music towns in the country, and heard a lot of great blues and
jazz in St.
Louis, Kansas City, and New Orleans. We even got to spend a
little time
off in the Mississippi Delta, where we went to the Blues Museum
in
Clarksdale, and Memphis, where we saw Rufus Thomas perform-he
was soulful
and hilarious at the same time!
This was truly a journey through the historical heartland of
much
of our favorite music. We were fortunate enough to hang out
with the great
Jay McShann, another legend of American Jazz and Blues who is
still going
strong. It was an honor to spend some time with Jay, who lead
one of the
greatest big bands out of Kansas City or any other city, and are
really
looking forward to performing on the same stage with him at the
Kansas City
Jazz and Blues Festival on July 22nd. We had a ball in Kansas
City, and
also got to meet Myra Taylor, yet another legendary singer.
Myra sang with
Harlan Leanord's Rockets, and on her own, and had such hits as
"The Spider
and the Fly" and "Take It Easy Greasy". Myra will also be at
the KC Jazz
and Blues Festival-she is a wonderful singer and a beautiful
person!
All of our shows were fun, and we thank everyone who came and
checked the band out. We're looking forward to the next tour,
which lasts
through all of July, and takes us from Reno to New York and the
East Coast,
through Eastern Canada, into the Midwest, and ends up in
Southern
California. We hope to see you on the road!

Until next time, lots of love, and we hope to see you soon,
Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert

On Lavay's album "One Hour Mama," there's a song called "Walk right in, walk right out." Have you ever wondered what the verse means when she says: "I have a man who likes to hucklebuck."?

On a recent discussion on Yehoodi, at least one answer has been made known. A hilarious clip from the Honeymooners (yes, Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden) demonstrates one version of the Hucklebuck.

Enjoy this link!
