She played Saturday at Tio Leo's and it was the first time I've seen her and her band. I have to say--I Am Now A Big Candye Kane fan! I must write this review to rave about her. They are from San Diego, but they are hardly ever here because they are so good and well-known that they travel all over. I think they might be the best San Diego swing band. Meeshi was there and raving about them too, and Valerie and Melissa were there and are trying to get them to play at the April exchange. I tell you, they were great. She's got a great smile, a great voice, and great back up band. Very tight. The trumpet player was great. They played lots of great lower tempo songs that appealed to us Lindyhoppers and faster stuff that people did east-coast to. They played blues, R&B, rockabilly-type songs, and plenty of C&W swing songs, but even that was OK. The crowd was good, with a few of us regulars, a few Tio's regulars and lots of others including a couple of lesbians. She kept smiling and saying "thanks for dancing, a lot of great dancers out there today!" She's a big woman with an big expressive voice. Looks like she is at Croces on 2/26, The Belly-up on Sun. 2/27, the Derby, 2/29, europe in early March, Texas, late March, Tio leos on 3/31 again, and 3/24 Belly up again. Don't take my word for it, for gods sake, check these dates! She has 3 or 4 CDs out, I'll have to get a hold of one. Check out her web site. http://www.candye-kane.com A lot of the personal stuff has been removed or moved to another site, see the links. She became a stripper and model to get off welfare, she says that posing naked has increased her self-esteem, and she's quite outspoken about various things. But she didn't say anything in the Tio-Leo's show. I didn't care. The music was terrific. |

Ron-- I was going to write a rave review myself, but you beat me to it again. You're always one step ahead of me, mister. In any case, I had the most fun dancing last Saturday in SD than I've had in a long, long time. Maybe it's because it was the first Saturday in awhile that I had no responsibilities and could just cut loose and have dance without abandon. But, more likely, it had more to do with the music quality and tightness of Candye Kane's band. They've got that unquantifiable essence that one could only describe as "soul". Whatever the style of music, from R&B to country to jazz, they played with meaty, meaty "chops". I'd have to say their trumpet player is one of the best I've ever heard live and the frequent alternating solos between trumpet and guitar were saturated with that funky, funky "groove juice." All in all, I had a blast! Thanks again to all the followers who "put up" with me that night and let me go off into extreme goof-dom, especially Valerie for the 60's mashed-potato dance with a side of twisteroni, and Melissa for the wild roll-and-spin-across-the-floor dance. Melissa, in this unpredictable world filled ups-and-downs, dancing with you consistently gives me great pleasure and joy. Thank you for making me smile and keeping the spirit of dance fresh in my heart. You're rad-errific! Goodnight, my friends. I love y'all. Meeshi |

Ron, Music Trader frequently has her CD's, used and new. JaneH |

hey Meeshi - thank YOU for the goofy dance! why do you think i asked you specifically to dance w/ me when i started to hear the "these boots were made for walkin'" intro? cuz' i thought you'd make it even more fun and you did! :D and yes, we've booked Candye Kane for Swing Break's friday nite dance! We've been considering them for awhile, but I hadn't seen her play for a few months (back when sue palmer was still in the band) and Melissa had never seen them at all... we tried to catch them at Croce's after the Frankie dance, but unfortunately only heard her sing the last few notes of a song... I'm glad we waited it out to hear them play at Tio Leos & that they weren't booked for April 14th! |
| |
Thank you, Meeshi. I love dancing with you, too. You have that spunk-a-riffic style of dancing mixed with a bluesy-woosey style that keeps me guessing every time the music starts and your feet start a tappin. And that's why I love dancing with you so much. We all enjoyed watching you freak out at the Candye Kane concert and hope to see you freak out again when they play for us during Swing Break SD. You're the best! |
| |
Candye Kane is the best in San Diego. She's awesome and is hitting all the talk shows in America. Pretty soon she'll hit the big time. I've been dancing to her music for years. Where have all you guys been? Sleeping! There some good bands out there playing in small venues. Get out and see them! Danceman |
| |
Danceman, we're not a big bar crowd and some of us aren't even 21 ... Candye usually plays @ bars because they'll pay her more - our dance halls can't afford to book her band most of the time, and we like the room to dance. so to answer your question, we've all been dancing...we're not concerned as to how famous a band is - cherry poppin' daddies & big bad voodoo daddy made it 'big time' - most of us don't care to dance to their music. besides, the mainstream aspect of swing is over, and i don't see any swing band making it big anytime soon. we're having candye kane play @ our s.d. lindy exchange in april - the band will get more exposure to dancers then...and more of our dancers will find out what a fun & groovy band they are. how about you - where have you been? we're not familiar w/ your screen name. -valerie- |

It's spunky Friday.....Lets Rumble! |
| |
Val, Your right about the bar scene but my audience wasn't the under 21. My correction. Candye plays at some very seedy bar scenes, most notably the lesbian bar scenes. And your right, you need dance space to dance. But for those of the mature age you'd be quite suprised how many people don't dance in these seedy bar scences. Open dance space galore. I'm not into bars and drinking too -I just dance! But my point was mainly that she has been around for a long time. And there's not that many bands out there that you can West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, Lindy,Country western , Cha cha or even Rumba too. Well I've been around. Just drop my 2 cents worth every now and then. I'm around all around. Dancing around you all the time. Danceman |
| |
Yeah...Melissa & I went to "Club Bombay" once to check out Sue Palmer & her band...we noticed that Candye was playing there the following week. It was...interesting...I felt like I was in a movie or somethin' :) the floor was tiny, and so yes, we had room to dance. but i don't think anyone else would fit! are you literally dancing around me all the time? -valerie- |
| |
Yes! I'm always dancing around you. By the way I haven't seen Sue Palmer's band since she recently started it. How is she??? Any good? Does she still have that beehive hairdo? Catch you on the dance floor! -danceman- |
| |
No, Sue isn't sporting her beehive anymore :) she had a plain, short hairstyle when I saw her. She's still awesome on the piano! We're going to give her a song list for Swing Break SD just to give her band a general idea on tempos & the type of music we'd like to hear... you're always dancing around me huh? hmmm...any hints on your identity? |
| |
Thanks for the info Val. Maybe I'll see you next time at one of her gigs. I want to check out her music. Hints???? Hmmmmm ......just another lover of dance. Maybe I'll ask you for a dance in the future. -danceman |

Tomorrow evening, Dec. 22, at the Belly up Tavern, Candy Kane is playing "A Candy Kane Christmas Party." DONT MISS IT! See: http://www.bellyup.com/club.html for more info. Show starts at 5:30 PM $5 cover |
| |
I'll try to make it. Working until 6pm, then dealing with traffic... |
| |
Her website shows 8:30 as the show time...I'll call the Belly Up and post if it's not 5:30. Also, Billy Watson is playing with her! |
| |
w/Billy Watson as a special guest! 8:30-10:30. Oooo...Maybe hit Excelsior afterward? |
| |
So the San Diego Swing Kitten must be in town? I know you like LBtB. Next one is January 1, 3-6pm. |
| |
Candy Kane and Billy Watson together! Shoot, I hope it's the later time slot. |
| |
It is. Nathan James is up first. Candye Cane and Billy Watson are from 8:30 to 10:30. |
| |
What time is Nathan playing? Sounds like we should get there early anyway! |
| |
Between 5:30 and 8:30, I guess. Mercedes' email said he starts around 6pm. |
| |
Is Nathan playing solo? I guess I could just go look... |
| |
Hey Jeff, yes, SD swingkitten is in town (much more so these days) and looking forward to Portuguese hall tonight, Candy Kane tomorrow, Lindy in the Park this Sunday,(SF) and to LbtB on Jan 1. No rest for the wicked! |
| |
Don't forget Henry's tonite, Swing Kitten. |
| |
Yeah! |
| |
I might show up which would be better--the portuguese ballroom or Henry's?? |
| |
Hey, Rebecca! Thanks for the dances at Henry's. Glad you made it. Always a pleasure to dance with someone so musical. |
| |
Great to see you again Rebecca! Thanks for the dances at Henry's too. I agree with Jeff. You make us leads look good on the dancefloor. |
| |
Will there be dancing tonight in this Belly Up place (never been there) or only the music ? I don't know her music but checked out her bio and it's "impressive", in a sense. |
| |
The Belly Up has a large dance floor that can get really crowded (there's a big group of north county dancers that show up there regularly). |
| |
Thanks guys, you're sweet. It was awesome to dance with you again! Hope to see you much more at the Festival! |
| |
Candye Kane and Billy Watson are at the Belly Up again this Wednesday, Jan. 5, $5. 5:30 Billy Watson 8:30 Candy Kane The Belly Up website and recorded info phone line say "Candye Kane and guests" at 5:30 (and don't mention Billy Watson). Candye Kane and Billy Watson's websites don't list the show at all. Someone said this is the schedule, and I don't know where they got it or if they're just assuming it's the same as last month's show, so it would be good if someone else could confirm the schedule. |
| |
I called the Belly Up again and got a real person this time. Billy Watson will start sometime 5:30-6 and Candye Kane will start sometime 8-8:30 and go "as long as she wants to play". |
