Jazz 88.3 just increased their wattage output. They play great music and now and I can get them on the radio. Enjoy! |

Yeah; Good music, when on the radio! But it now interferes with my TV, so I need to get an FM trap for my antenna. |

On Jazz 88 I just heard "The Big Fat Band" play a song called Sing, Sang, Sung. A bit neo for my tastes, but what was interesting was that it was a variation on Sing, Sing, Sing. Now I know lots of variations have been written in classical music, but do you see many in jazz? And I'm not talking arrangement, but variation. I'm trying to think if I know of any, not that I'm knowledgeable. Is Blue Porpoise Avenue a variation on On Green Dolphin Street? Nat |

Pretty perceptive Nat. Most jazz standards are based on other tunes. They call this the "contrafact." Just like there are thousands of tunes based on the blues, there are an equal number based on "I've got Rhythm" by George Gershwin. Charlie Parker was notorious for changing the melodies and underlying progressions to standards. It's not like theme and variation by Brahms, where the theme is stated matter-of-factly and then embelished in the same tune, but a more sophisticated bent where the musician assumes the listener is bored of the original. Ignore Spawn of Satan, she's just cranky because she still has to do homework. |
