I'm sure that everyone has probably seen this page, but it kept my interest for 30 minutes or so. Thought someone might be entertained by it. I think it is pretty old considering it has a Josie and Eric teaching advertisement and an advertisement for Johnny Lloyd as well. Good info though and some addresses of Lindyhoppers around the world. It is worth browsing. http://www.halcyon.com/lindyhop/WLHF/wlhfa.html |

In fact this page has not been updated since Feb. 97. It has a lot of info which I think everyone probably already knows, but who knows you might come across something interesting. You can even go to the Seattle web site HI DEE HO. It is no longer monitored either. I danced with Viola, one of the contacts posted on the site, in San Fransisco at Frankie's b-day party. So obviously she is still into the scene. It was like walking through a ghost town, having known it was once kept up and running like SwingtimeSd is. They advertise plenty of videos of past instructors' camps, and old videos as well. I wonder if you can still get any of the merchandise? It is way late and I am going to bed. |

Hey Chris-- Those sites WERE maintained by Keith Hughes up in Seattle. He was one of the founding members of Seattle's swing scene (many years ago), and still teaches occasional workshops with Viola. Last time I talked to him (which was Beantown last year), he said he was burned out being a visible force (target) in the swing scene and wanted to keep a low profile (ergo, no regular Seattle classes or website maintenance). He is living proof that our seemingly harmless Lindy addictions can lead to psychological burnout if not balanced with other social activities (i.e. "a life"). Peace, Meeshi p.s. He taught a great class on how to listen to jazz music last year at Beantown. Hopefully, he will do the same this year. |

Meeshi, Keith's music appreciation class was excellent. Looking forward to it again. Also, Steven's class with the live band was a highlight. Apparently the band will be resident during week two and will play for classes. |

An email I received --------------------- Dear Swing Movers and Shakers, Here's a second note to let you know that my book, The Swing Book, is now available and ready to start dancing its way out of stores. In brief, The Swing Book is a guidebook to all things swing , from bios of bands and singers, history, c.d. recommendations, dance information, fashion coverage and city-by-city club, dance instructor and web page listings. The book (published by Little, Brown at an affordable $14.95) is now in most major bookstores and also available at Barnesandnoble.com and Amazon.com. I had a fantastic time writing the book and getting to know the wonderful swing community. In turn, I've already gotten some wonderfully gratifying feedback about The Swing Book: Bandleader Bill Elliott - "Degen Pener is the first journalist to portray the swing revival in all its multi-faceted glory: the long-simmering grass-roots swing dance movement, the reasons for young people's fascination with retro culture, the origins of the popular new bands, the colorful and sometimes contradictory opinions of the participants. For those of us who've rued the media attention given only to the most cartoonish and faddish aspects of our scene, THE SWING BOOK is a welcome validation of our efforts. Pener has produced an authoritative guide that will entertain experienced scenesters and eager newcomers alike - the perfect stocking stuffer for Swing Nation!" Atomic Magazine - "The Swing Book should be required reading for anyone who enjoys classic big band or neo-swing music, anyone who has ever taken a class in Lindy Hop, or anyone who has seen that Gap commercial and wondered what the whole thing was all about . . . This comprehensive guide covers everything from the history of jazz and the origins of the Lindy Hop to the roots of the swing renaissance . . . Author Degen Pener gets a gold star for copious research and delightful writing style. Rich with anecdotes and chock-full of facts, The Swing Book is a super resource for swing lovers of all ages." Bo Lewis, The Bo Lewis Big Band Dance Party - "Ounce per ounce, dollar per dollar, this is the BEST! This is one well-done Swing guide. I have them all and while the others are great too, this one is moderately priced and of compact size for enjoyable reading and reference anywhere-anytime. Great sections on fashion, swing lingo, history, artists (both legends & today's stars) clubs, dance steps and much more... You can't do better for the money... I keep it near when I do my weekly radio/Internet Swing show." I hope you like it as well. If you have any questions about publicizing or promoting the book, please contact Laura Brown at 212-522-8069. Any help in talking up the book through swing e-mail lists would be greatly appreciated too. Best Wishes, Degen Pener P.S.: You can also check out an interview I did on the book with Broadcast.com at http://www.broadcast.com/books/authorInterviews/Degen_Pener.stm |

James, Where were you on Sunday? Laura said to say bye. Natalie |
| |
Unfortunately, I had put off doing my taxes for too long, and by the time I was done I wasn't really feeling up to going out. Sounds like everyone had a blast, and I'm sorry I missed it. I'll be at the Rocket tonight, though, to sort-of make up for the lack of Sunday dancing. |
| |
Bo Lewis's CD reviews are extremely superficial, he doesn't ever say anything bad and mostly just describes the music type and list the musicians, but I'll add them to the links part of my reviews page. |

That website has been one of the main swing info sites for a long time. Excellent site. |
