Okay guys, the rockets been becoming deserted. It's a great space and we need all age venues. Youth is the future of swing. We need the young people. so what are we going to do to help the Rocket stay alive???? Any thoughts? |
| |
My biggest complaint with the Rocket (on Tuesday), most recently is the music. It seems that the only songs that are being played are the ones that are either way too fast or really slow. Mind you, I don't mind dancing to either one but I would like a little change. Plus, there doesn't seem to be enough of the classic swing songs. Maybe it's just me.... Maybe, even if this does sound kinda cheesy, we should do some sort of theme type night. In San Francisco, when no one was going to the HiBall we organized a night where everyone came in their pajamas for LPN and after that we had a steady for turnout for weeks. Just a thought... Regina |
| |
Yes, yes, I know I've heard complaints. I've suggested giving Doug playlist, or hey, here's a concept. Tip the man. Ya, that's right. When I was in college and use to go clubbing we would tip the DJ to play our fav song. Guess what? It worked. Anyway, I heard he resigned. On to themes. Funny you should say that. I was just talking to Alan about that on Tuesday. Swivel Mag is going to try to sponsor some fun things. I think it would be good and fun. At least for the summer. Wen need to get the word out to the young folk. I mean it's the only all age venue in San Diego!!!! Obviously I can go to the bar, but swing as a whole needs teens. Really, I know I sound corny, but where are they in the summer? Let's round 'em up and get them in there! Idea's anyone... |
| |
I agree the music has been bad lately. Also the bands haven't been anything I would go see. My biggest complaint and reason I have lost interest is that most people seem to treat it like a practice or workout session. |
| |
The Rocket still seems busy on Tuesdays, and whoever the DJ was, he/she spinned at least some good tunes last Tuesday the short time I was there. But I'm not a big fan of the place on Fri/Sat, because there are less people my age to dance with, and the band quality was spotty the couple times I went. I don't know how I can help it to stay alive unless I go to a place I don't want to go. |
| |
Well, for me Tuesday's are a practice session. I'm not there to show off, Tuesday, I'm there to polish out steps. As for the weekends. Ya, the bands have not been worth ten bucks. It's a catch 22 though. If there'snot enough interest there's no money to bring in better bands, but no one goes if there's not better bands. I also think what is happening is the dance crowd is maturing dance and musically. What appealed to them last year, just doesn't send them this year. They've grown more sophisticated, and swing savvy. Don't you think? |
| |
In my experience with working with bands, they don't want to play at a place that won't appreciate them, let alone play at a venue that doesn't draw people (a lot of bands get a percentage of the door, typically about 30%). Even if we got a band that we really, really liked at the Rocket, no one applauds or cheers because they're too focused on their dancing. I know that this is an endless debate but seriously.... There has to be some way to pull people in the club. And when I go on Tuesday nights, I'm not there to dress up and show off. I'm there cause my friends are there and the people that I want to dance with are there. I also like to go there to pick up moves from people and practice. It's "lindy hop relaxation" time where there's no pressure to be a certain way, you know what I mean!!! |
| |
Speaking of all ages shows... Rumour has it that Big Time Operator is trying to work out a deal with the Catamaran on Sundays to do an all ages swing show (kinda like they do on Wednesdays except that everyone can go). That oughta be different, especially if they keep this expanded dance floor thing like they had at Lavay!!! Regina |
| |
Okay Regina, you asked for it!!!! New Swing Night at the Rocket!!! Starting July 7th at 7:30 Sharp Wednesday Swivel Mag will sponsor a Vintage Movie and short dance lesson. Free popcorn. Bring pillows or blankets and have a seat and enjoy the classic dance movie Twice Blessed. Then enjoy a quick Shag lesson from Tammy and David Francis and dance the summer night away! Come back every Wednesday for a fun dance lesson or movie (schedule not confirmed yet, I guess we'll see how it goes), at 8pm. You will be treated to all the fun and goofiness of the 30's-50's. Have you wanted to learn Frankie's Shim Sham? How about the Madison, or Shag or Balboa. We thought we would try something a little different. So far we've only planned for the summer months of July and August. So, don't miss this limited chance to try something completely different. Look for theme nights and more movies coming your way. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions, post here or write me at: tfrancis@cityntl.com |
| |
Oh Tammy, that sounds like so much fun!!! Can we come in our pajamas, pretty please, can we, huh, huh, huh?!?! Wow, this is totally different!!! Count me in to be there. You mean, that there will be people that I can shag with here in San Diego, now?!?! Soooooo cool!!! Regina |
| |
Pajamas, ummmmmm, I did suggest that to Alan, but he wasn't too keen on the idea. I've got some good ideas up my sleeve though. I think you will be pleasantly surprised! (on another subject, thanks for calling in last night on the show, that was cool!!!) |
| |
Tammy, You must be reading my mind. I was just thinking about where I could go to learn some Shag, especially after watching the Shaggers take over the floor on the fast numbers. See you there! |
| |
Wait 'till you see this movie, too!!! It's got some of the coolest dancing you've seen yet. Plus it's a cute, well-made movie. (Could make a good date night, wink wink!) We're going to teach a Shag sequence from the movie. We just want to have a Summer of Fun!!! We're going to mix it up over the summer. Some movies, some Shag, Bal, line dances, anything crazy and fun we can find from the era that hasn't been done around here!!!! We DON'T want you to stop coming to the Rocket on Tuesday or Friday, Tuesday will still be the best, practice, kick-back night, and Friday will still be dress-up and dance to live music, but Wednesday, will be pure silliness and fun! |
| |
Got a hint for you all. As a young swinger in San Diego I can tell you that a lot of under 21 age people (not Kids), dont even know about the Rocket. I heard about it by word of mouth. The Rocket needs to do a little advertising in places where people of all ages, plus lots of young people hang out. Ever thought of getting one of those ads they play before a movie in the theater. Everyone sits and reads those things. There are lots of youth oriented places that the Rocket can do something as simple as put up a few posters, and it would get lots of attention. Want to know another interesting fact? Many high schools in San Diego have swing clubs. Once a week the kids get together and practice, and teach eachother new steps. These kids, or young people are always looking for a place to dance. Some of them are really good too. The Rocket would be wise to invest in a little advertising. It can be done cheeply, and effectivly. Plus you can target a surtain group of people. Weather your looking for the younger crowd, or new unexperianced dancers, or veterans at swing dancing. I have lots of advertising ideas if anyone is interested. |
| |
Thank you all who came to our NEW night, (Wednesday at the Rocket). It was a success! We had a about 80 people and I thought that was pretty good! It was fun and ALL the popcorn got eaten! Oh, I think next time I will bring a pillow, my bootie got a little sore sitting on the floor for that long! Everyon seemed to love the movie and the dance scenes. There was lot's of clapping and laughing. So what's next??? Next Wednesday we will teach the Madison, a 50's line dance. So you don't even need a partner! Then the Wednesday after that we will have a 50's Sock Hop after showing the rare 50's movie "Don't Knock the Rock." This has three or four long dance sequences. Really fun stuff. So, for all those of you getting a little bored with the same old thing. Give this a try. For only $5 you can't beat it! |
| |
Hey Tam! Kudos! Last night at the Rocket was very entertaining and fun. Thanks so much for all you and David's efforts. I was wondering if there is any chance that the Rocket is going to do Saturday nights again. If you know, could you please fill me in? Thanks, 0:) |
| |
Tammy, I've recently heard a song called "Begin The Begine"? A song about a flash-in-the-pan dance from the swing era called The Begine? Have you ever seen this dance? How about the DippseyDoodle? Friday dance trivia questions.... |
| |
Nan: Ummmm, I think it may be some kind of Waltz-like or Fox Trot-like dance. I'll post the question to Peter. If anyone knows, it's him. I've heard of the Lambeth Walk and a dance called the Dipseydoodle and the Continental and I think the college Rag. David's got a collection of really old songs that tell you how to do some of the dances and I have a dance book from 1934 with some of that stuff. Swingbaby: I don't know of any plans for Saturday night. I think the weekends are more expensive to rent and he's struggling now. Hopefully our Wednesday will bring people back. I'm very open to suggestions. Anything you want to learn or do, or any themes you're interested in seeing? |
| |
My only complaint is all the fast 50's music. Is that why everyone started leaving right after the class? I could go to Tio Leos if I wanted to hear rockabilly. Other than that the class and movie were Gr8! |
| |
Yes, the music slection was strange. I think they were trying to get people to practice the Shag we just taught. Did you ask the DJ to play anything for you? I'm sure he would, just ask. We're going to try to keep it different and changing, so let him know what you want. |
| |
Tammy, Thanks again for the shag lesson. It was a lot of fun! Query: This may have been answered in another thread, but can you tell me the difference between /among all the shags (Carolina, St Louis, College, etc)? Which one did you guys teach on Wednesday? Thanks! |
| |
Well, we taught 6-count Collegiate Shag, There's also 4-count and 8-count. The four count or single is Balboa timing kick, step, step, step, what we taught was Kick, Kick, step, step, step, and then there's Kick, Kick, Kick, step, step, step. As far as Carolina and St. Louis go, I always get them mixed up. I think it's the Carolina Shag that looks a lot like Charleston and the St. Louis looks just like West Coast like you see in the movie "Shag." I got this mixed up last time, so it may be reversed. Some people thought it moved a little fast, but we only had a half hour for the lesson. That was the idea with the movie and stuff! In the future we will have a movie OR a lesson! |
| |
Yes Tammy...You've mixed them up. Carolina Shag looks westie (as seen in the movie SHAG). It was originally a "beach" dance. St. Louis shag looks like Charleston and should be done to very fast music. |
| |
Anyone going to the Rocket tonight via El Cajon? There is an out-of-town follow who needs a lift. If so, mail me at rob@salk.edu. |
| |
Sorry I couldn't give her a lift, Rob. Did she make it? What was her name? There were a few unfamiliar faces at the Rocket, and they all danced quite well. Though attendance has been light recently, the quality of the dancers remains great. I guess that's what keeps me coming back. Also, Margaret announced the finding of a new home for the Rocket. It's in Point Loma (does this mean we can do after-hours at Gabe's cavern of a place?) and sounds fantastic. She says she'll post full details. Free (!) try-out on May 23, Tuesday so tell all your friends dancers and non-dancers alike. |
| |
Can't wait for the new and improved ROCKET to open!!! From what Margaret has told me it'll be fantastic!!! We can also grab dinner at Gabe's first, or maybe meet at Point Loma Seafoods!!! |
| |
Missed you at the Rocket last night Jeff. |
| |
I was actually at the Rocket last night for Margaret and Jim's class, but I had Jordan and Jenna with me and had to get them home to bed, ya know, single dad and all. My babies were tired. I missed being able to stay. I'll probably go to the Catamaran tonight after I sing at Maranatha Chapel. Jennifer mentioned that she's going. I'd rather swing with Jennifer than Salsa with Meeshi and Marcus. Sorry guys. |
| |
Salsa! *Nat's lindy antlers prick up* Where?, When? |
| |
oooh, come, Natalie. Cafe Sevilla, gaslamp. Lessons start at 8:30. I'm bringing along a good friend of mine, and he promised me to learn how to dance. so--the more women he has to dance with, the better |
| |
Jim tells me the Rocket is going to try out its new location NEXT Tuesday. It will be free. Yes, FREE. Its at the Portuguese center in Pt. Loma. Jim says it has good acoustics, the price is right, and it has air-conditioning! If all goes well, the Rocket will move there in another month or so. So this Tuesday (tomorrow) is still at Vasa, next Tuesday the 23rd is at Portuguese Hall, then a few more Tuesdays at Vasa, then back to Portuguese Hall. So on Tuesday, May 23rd, don't miss the tryout of the new Rocket location at the Portuguese center in Pt. Loma. Usual Rocket hours: 9-midnight. I'll be DJing, and I promise a good mix. Look for a flyer for details. Being free, and something new, it'll almost certainly draw a big, fun, crowd. |
| |
How do you get there from LA? Not that I am going, but I might just decide to be wacky and drive down. (barring further knee pain.) |
| |
I don't know the address yet. Stay tuned. |
| |
I think this is where it is being held. Copy-paste the following to your web-browser: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/ddResults.py?Pyt=Typ&tarname=&tardesc=&newname=&newdesc=&newHash=&newTHash=&newaddr=&newcsz=Los+Angeles%2C+CA&newcountry=us&newtaddr=2831+Avenida+De+Portugal&newtcsz=San+Diego%2C+CA+92106&newtcountry=us&Get%A0Directions=Get+Directions |

Who's dj-ing at the Rocket tonight? Do people still go to the Rocket anymore? I'm so out of it... |
| |
Not sure, not me. Its been a bit quiet there recently. |
| |
I think Kathleen is DJing. You might check out Lima's on La Jolla Blvd. |
| |
I'm definitely going to the Rocket! The bars come and go. The Rocket needs our support. The dance floor is large and if we all show up we'll have as much fun there as we do at the Firehouse. What fun is it if we divide ourselves up among 10 bars? Nobody will survive and we'll have no place to dance in a year from now. I think the best place to be is where we all end up meeting as a dance community. If you've got some music you want played, bring it. All the DJ's in San Diego are relatively new at this. Let's let them know what we like and help them grow. Avoiding certain DJ's doesn't help our scene grow...Gotta get back to work... See ya there! Jeff |
| |
Jeff, as much as I admire your support of the Rocket, I take exception to your "10 bars" exaggeration. I don't know about these other obscure or new bars, but for a while there after the Marriott Saturday night closed, there was only the Cannibal bar, Tio Leos, and some shows at the Belly-up. Because swing dancers generally don't drink, and swing bands generally don't draw big crowds, I don't think we'll ever have many swing nights at bars! We might have a couple too-many venues in general in town right now, bars and non-bars, but we'll see how it works out. They all have their strengths. Incidentally, maybe other DJs are cool with it, but I want to discourage people from bringing music to places when I'm DJing. I've made it a policy not to play CDs people bring in (with only a couple rare exceptions). I prefer to screen songs thoroughly at home first. But I like to play requests, and I sure love it when people loan me or give me CDs or tapes to listen to, like Emily, Gabe, Meeshi, Michael and others have all done... I don't mean to be obnoxious about it, but I'm really uncomfortable playing stuff immediately that people bring in. |
| |
Jeff, the bars may come and go, but I enjoy the live music discoveries that are out there. For instance, the Lima Bar and Grill in La Jolla. Bob Gordon plays there on Tuesdays and now the La Jolla Allstars will be there on Thursdays. There is a small dance floor, but it is a great little venue (and all ages). I encourage everybody to grab a partner and go explore. |
| |
Good point, Ron, about "unscreened" music. I can see why you'd always want to listen to a song first. Sometimes it's just too confusing to preview it on the player that's next up. Some songs, though, you'll know and just may not have the CD. Or, as you mentioned, they can loan it to you so you can reveiw it. Either way, we can expose DJ's to music they hadn't heard or considered yet. |
| |
Chris and Shawn, while I think that Lima's is a fun place, I think you guys might be sending the wrong message. Dancers, if you want to go out and dance, then go to the Rocket. Lima's is a very small dance floor, one, maybe two couples, and unless you have a dance partner, or you can shag 200bpm+, it's won't be that much fun. A few of us occasionally go, mainly just to enjoy the old music, but if lots of kids start coming, and don't respect the old timers, who also like to dance, I'm sure they will enforce or increase the $10 minimum at the door. |
| |
FROM MARGARET: Jeff...Thanks for your support of the Rocket.... Melbamoose.. Jim Cruzen will be DJing at the Rocket tonight(Sorry, I haven't had time to change the calendar on the web site) As a DJ, Jim has gotten some very positive feedback from the dancers lately. Ron... I know you haven't been there lately but the last two weeks have been great.....Meeshi has even been showing up. As for recommendations to go elsewhere, I understand everyone has their particular interest and discovering new music is great fun. I enjoy this as well. I just hope our community realizes that venues operated by members of our dance community need your continued support. It is not easy to maintain a weekly venue and is certainly not done for the money. Meeshi, Emily, Jim Cruzen, Chris Bowling, Mickey Raml, myself (and others in the past) do it because we love this community. Your love and support in return is all we can hope for. I personally have always tried to consistently support the venues operated by these people over other choices. I make a point to inform my students about The Marriott, The Firehouse, Breakaway and the Rocket both verbally and with flyers. Generally, when I don't show up, it's because I have been teaching so much that I just need to stay home and take a break. From my own experience in other dance communities(the last Latin craze, country swing, west coast swing, etc.), longevity has always come in the form of consistently supporting events & venues produced by our own family of dancers. Variety is the spice of life...we all need a change now and them, some new inspiration....I completely relate to this..... please, just don't forget to take care of your own dance family in the process. Love you all! Margaret |
| |
Ron, does that mean you won't play my Devo cd anymore? C'mon pleeease? Just one song? |
| |
That Devo cd is awesome! |
| |
That is alotta love! |
| |
and playing someones cd ear-unheard (as opposed to sight unseen) puts one in the awkward position of possibly not liking and even detesting the piece of music they would like you to play. one is compelled to take an attitude or flat out lie. i always feel a slight pang of remorse when i tell someone that their song choice bites and i feel even worse when i toss their cd in the trash or across the dancers heads, while laffing. usually, i dont play it and i wind up telling them that it is "too hip for the room". that keeps 'em happy. |
| |
I had such a great time at the Rocket last night!!! It was so nice to see so many LA style dancers: Gabe, Jake, Krista, "Dan Collins", Dennis, and that GQ lookin' guy with the great hair (forgive me Lord, I only remem- ber the ladies' names!!) I got home last night and felt all warm and fuzzy with "lindy contentment" (or maybe it was just that buttery Cabernet I was sipping!)...Anyway, so many great follows were there! I got to dance with Margaret, Valerie, and Valorie, Natalie (whose birthday is to- morrow at the Catamaran), Karina, Krista, Amy, and "Sweet Loraine", (who will be leaving us soon for Seattle!!!! Hopefully she won't go!!) The San Diego's dance scene is gonna grow in leaps and bounds if last night keeps repeating itself. Can't wait to try out the new and improved Rocket location in Point Loma next Tuesday!!! |
| |
OK, one of my exceptions is after midnight at the Firehouse. The Firehouse officially stops at midnight, so after that, anything goes. I like to play slow blues. And a hip-hop song thrown in. Whatever. Meeshi brings out his strange songs. Kate brings in Devo, the Time Warp, always something unusual... |
| |
Humm... just six months ago this post would have read something like: "It was so nice to see so many Hollywood style dancers..." Just a funny little observation. Carry on. |
| |
Jeff -- Was "that GQ lookin' guy with the great hair" Rob Duncan? He was there and always looks quite spiffy! |
| |
I still feel warm and fuzzy. Oh, I forgot! Jennifer was there at the Rocket last night, too! Lindy Hop Heaven.... Hey Cat, I think it was Rob. I've never really gotten a chance to speak with him, but I think that's who it was. Nice dancer. What a difference six months makes! |
| |
I had so much fun last night and the ratio of leads to follows was absolutely scrummy (that means scrumptious, as in good - in never know when I have to translate). Thank you so much to all you guys _and_ girls for the (practice) birthday dances. You all made me feel so special. Sorry to those I was leading, I'm still kind of stuck on 4 or 5 moves and the hot swapping from lead to follow was making my brain melt. But I had fun, fun, fun. Thanks to Jim for some excelent DJing. Jeff, I think you are thinking of Rob, definately a good dancer. Feel the lindy love!!!!!!!!!!! Hope to see y'all at the Catamaran tonight. |
| |
I totally forgot to check the forum after my post yesterday, but thank you to everyone that got back to me. I would just like to say that I had the time of my life dancing yesterday at both venues (how's that for some dance community efforts??)!! Definitely the best dancing I've had in a LONG time. Every time I go to dance, I keep kicking myself in the ass for not dancing more often. Thank you to all the guys, with the lack of follows, I felt like a superstar yesterday....it was great! I've missed you all, and have missed dancing in such a comfortable community. Thanks, until my next SD visit... peace out Krista |
| |
The Rocket (Vasa Hall) sure was a good place to dance. I'll miss that place, lot of fun memories there. However, when a bunch of us stopped bye last nite, we didn't hear a single big band or swing song. Oh well, now I know why I got tired of dancing to jump blues and '60's tracks of Ella Fitzgerald. |
| |
Gabe, you must not have recieved the announcement... The Swing Scene is dead in San Diego. It has been replaced with the San Diego Jump, Blues & Bop Scene (the JBBS for short.) I guess they all got tired of Swing dancing. Enjoy. |
| |
Quit talking about my hair or it will fall out and then I'll have to do the whole hair-transplant-from-the-ass-to-the-head thing. Clinging miserly to his last highly polished strands, Rob PS A pleasure hanging with you all. See you at the "New Improved Rocket*" *now with Retsin |
| |
Poor Reuben, who thinks that swing dancing should only be done to Big Band era style music. I really feel sorry for you, Reuben. It must be frustrating hearing good 50's R&B, 50-60's jazz, modern jump blues & swing songs, watching all the dancers have fun dancing to those songs, and talking about their favorite songs, and being unable to convince people of the superiority of capital S Swing songs. What a powerless, frustrating, feeling. Now I understand the reasons for your pathetic little digs directed at the San Diego swing scene on our forum. |
| |
Rob smells nice too, even after a night of dancing! :) |
| |
Ron, Your almost as funny as I am. Almost. Oh yeah... and thank you for proving my point as well. |
| |
P.S. My pathetic little digs are not directed at the San Diego Swing Scene, because, as I noted above, said scene is dead. My pathetic little digs are directed at the San Diego Jump, Blues, and Bop Scene... which is the scene you were refering too, who's people of course would have fun dancing to 50's R&B, 50-60's jazz, modern jump blues and the like. I don't waste my time trying to convince said people of the superiority of Swing music, because they are not Swing dancers. I concentrate my efforts, music collection, and knowledge of Swing music on people who are actual Swing dancers... who's population is dwindling in San Diego. Said San Diego Swing dancers typically don't go dancing in San Diego anymore. The music has driven them away. |
| |
gosh, I guess you won't be posting anymore since you're a swing dancer, and we don't swing dance. Well, been nice knowing you. Bye, bye andy (member SDJJBS) |
| |
Yes, everybody, listen to Reuben. He knows more about San Diego than we do. Even though he's only been down here twice. We, all three of us, (said san diego swing dancers) don't dance in San Diego anymore, we just go bowling or get tatoos. |
| |
Andy, you beat me to it. Do we have to change the name of this site in accordance - bopOrama? |
| |
Gabe's right. And we don't even like swing dancers, bowling (chris included), or tattoos. Good thing there is only three of y'all, or we'd be forced to swing dance. yeeesh. Boporama.. like it. or SwingNotORama |
| |
Hey Andy, I met some people you might like to meet. Bunch of vintage Salsa dancers, dressed in the vintage Spanish attire. They don't like you modern salsa dancers either. They say you guys have corrupted the whole underground salsa movement with your modern repetitive music and Adiddas'. They even busted out some rad old salsa tunes from the 30's which don't get played much at the clubs anymore. You've got to hear this one old cut, by a great Mexican salsa band featuring Speedy Gonzalez on vocals, truly incredible. (note to Ron and Rondoe, occasionally jokes are posted here, so don't take too seriously) |
| |
Hey Gabe, You are the most talented fence walker I have ever know. How do you do it? |
| |
