Natalie, the anonymous poster is obviously not even a dancer. Margie is one of the main reasons San Diego follows are so fun to dance with. They've been instructed by a real dancer who also happens to teach. Bad mouthing Margie is like stamping "idiot" on your forehead, hence the anonymous "sucker punch". |
| |
Margie is an excellent dancer but given how many strong personalities there are in San Diego swing, including her, it is not surprising that she rubs some people the wrong way. |
| |
For f*cks sake people, I asked for someone's e-mail address, not a bl**dy character evaluation. |
| |
I think the "Hell No" was in response to Reuben's demonstration of what to do when home alone with a doll collection. |
| |
I never got instructed by margaret. |
| |
Melba, it's worth it. She's a great dancer (as opposed to someone who dances*) and a great teacher. She combines a wonderful mix of physicality, emotion and science. *weird I know, but like the difference between someone who can play a musical instrument, and a true musician. Sorry if that's as clear as mud. |

Margaret is the bomb. She rocks. It's one thing to just be a good dancer. It's another thing to be able to teach people how to dance. Margaret can do both. Anonymous back there hasn't taken class from her, or has he/she danced with her. |
| |
Chris and Shauna did not know how to dance at all until they met Margie. They've taken dozens of private lessons with her and progressed extremely rapidly, as does anyone who studies with her. Her group classes with Jim are great, but if you want to get about 2 months worth of group lessons in an hour or two take a private lesson with her. Of course there are those out there who "have the gift" and progress rapidly by osmosis. But for most of us out there, who never danced at all until we began swing dancing, lessons are invaluable. Teachers like Margaret, Meeshi and Lisa will teach you tons of stuff you'd probably never learn without them. P.S..few things rub people the wrong way more that anonymous idiotic posts. |
| |
Actually Jeff, Chris and Shawna took lessons with Julia and I way before Margaret...G Lounge lessons. |
| |
Thanks Lisa. I had no idea. Not surprised. You gave me my very first Lindy Lesson at the Hanalei. I'm primarily referring to the amount of privates that they took with Margaret and how quickly they got good. |
| |
Yeah Jeff, but you said... "Chris and Shauna did not know how to dance at all until they met Margie." Which is totally incorrect considering they took lessons (not just one as you're implying) with Julia and I before they even moved to SD (and I think they knew at least a little bit before they moved here). They took a lot of lessons with a lot of different instructors, which is why they got good fast. My point is...No one instructor makes a student excellent. It's the students drive, determination and versatality which makes them excel quickly...and that's exactly how Chris and Shawna did it. |
| |
Thanks for edumacatin' me. I was quite errant in my description of the facts. I stand corrected. And, as far as your "point" goes, I wholeheartedly agree. P.S...I'd actually like to hear from Chris and Shauna what teacher/s had the greatest impact on them; or if it was several, which ones helped them the most in what areas. Wouldn't that be an interesting new thread to start on the forum? It would also be a way for people to know what teachers to use for what they want to work on or emphasize. |

Not interested. I know she's a good dancer. I remember seeing her and Meeshi at the Glen Miller Orchestra concert in the ballroom at UCSD and being blown away. Just differences in styles. I can acknowledge her talent as a dancer. It's phenomenal. I think it'd be dope to be a professional dancer. But alas...that ain't my thing. Peace Krista |

It's SHANA...not Shauna, or what ever other way it has been spelled. I only make this point because I am a spelling dork and I do it for a living (you know, correcting others). Besides, from personal experience, my name has been butchered in so many ways that I now have issues about it. Heehee. Tertia (tur-sha) |
| |
Funny thing, Tertia. I was waiting for Chris to set the record straight on the spelling of "Shana." Perhaps we should post it in the news section so it can sink in for a good couple of weeks. Newsflash: Correct spelling of Shana Bowling discovered! |
| |
What's funny is that I had no idea how to spell it so I went to the "Break Away" website and got the spelling of her name there under one of their photos dancing together!!! From now on I'm just gonna call: 1.800. TERTIA for all my spelling needs. See ya'll at Claytons! |

OK In response to this thread about Shana and me. Back East we took some ballroom dancing from Franklin-Alenxander Ballroom Studio. We learned all we could about east coast swing. We also learned foxtrot, some Rhumba, Waltz, and Cha-Cha. When we came out for work interviews I looked up "swing" on the internet in San Diego and the SDLHS was what we found. So we went and learned from Julia and Lisa at the G-Lounge. When we moved here we continued to take their group classes. We met Margaret in November, two months after we moved to SD. We were dancing at Harmony on Fifth and Jeff came up and introduced himself to us. We then met Margaret and she let us know that she taught Lindy. We really wanted to learn, b/c the East Coast really lacked that extra POW! We began taking lessons soon after our meeting and took from her for several months. We averaged a private a week for at least 5 months. On top of that we practiced all the time. It wouldn't be uncommon to catch us at 24 Hour Fitness on a Friday night practicing. We met Meeshi a month or so after we met Margaret and Shana has taken one or two lessons from him focusing on jazz movements. We went to the Harvest Moon Ball, Catalina, Camp Hollywood, Monster's of Swing, and Jitterbug Jam. We have taken privates and/or groups with
and - I can't thin of anyone else right now. Each one gave us something to learn, to think about, and to practice. The more you learn, the more you can pull from and apply to your dancing. Our biggest influences are Alexander Hume and Harold Cottrell of Franklin-Alexander Studio from back east. They gave us so much support and positive energy that we wanted to continue to learn dance after we moved to SD. They took us from nothing in two months and had us dancing several of the ballroom dances pretty good, not competition level by any means, but good. They have been so supportive and are always so excited to here that we are in town when we go back. They always want us to teach or put a show on for their dancers. If it wasn't for them and their great support we would have lost interest in dance a long while ago. Plain and simple, they lit the spark. |

Thanks, Chris, for the post. You and Shana are a real example and source of encouragement to me. You've shown that couples can work together! You've also demonstrated what commitment and constant practice can achieve. I'm sorry I haven't been supporting Break Away as much as I would like. There's alot of options available now to me that are closer to where I live. I usually don't dance on Saturdays unless a bunch of people persuade me to drive them up to Memories. |

Excuse the typos please. |

No. Inexcusable. |

Julia and Lisa know as much about these dances as anyone in SD. You could do worse than take a few classes from them, even if it's just for the sake of diversity. Rob |

Thank you Rob! Glad to know somebody is alive out there! B.T.W. no class on Father's Day. We will resume the following week. |
