Must remeber to bring metronome to firehouse tonight, must remember to bring metronome to firehouse tonight.... |
| |
There is an electronic metronome on the CD player at the firehouse. If you ask the DJ, he might be able to tell you the BPM for the songs, or let you use the counter to figure it out. It only takes like 10 seconds. |
| |
True. But Ron knows the BPM of everything anyway. But you're right. The CD player will tell you. Honestly, I haven't seen any fast lindy in San Diego that's the caliber of LA, or that resembling an "authentic", precise and relaxed look. We're all just starting to be exposed to it, and I personally think it takes lots of practice with a regular partner, much in the same way that aerials require lots of practice with a specific partner. Once a bunch of "partners" all know the same stuff, I feel it can be come "semi-social" within that specific circle. I think we see alot of that up in LA. I feel that performance groups provide an environment for tons of growth to take place. In a performance group, not only is everyone learning all the same difficult and challenging steps, but everyone has a vested interest in how each other looks. So there's lots of constructive criticism that helps people improve quickly. It also keeps dancers from being stuck on the same "plateau" for extended periods with no apparent improvement. If someone has a "bad habit" developing, someone on the dance "team" will point it out. There are some dance communities that really get into the competition thing, like LA and Seattle, and others, and they're cranking out some great dancers. The flip side of this coin, of course, is performers who can't socially dance. The ideal balance as a dancer is to be able to do both. On the social dance floor, most "intermediate and advanced" dancers aren't in that frame of mind. They just want to dance and have fun. Most don't have the time to invest in a "performance group" that practices twice a week and then goes around performing. It's such a luxury to have the time and money to be able to do that. I wish, personally, that I could be involved in a group like the "Rugcutters". It's my guess that in the next year the most improved dancers will be in that mix, if they continue to socially dance as well, and make an "accommodating connection" a priority as they do so. I'm JJ, and that's my perspective. |

Actually, the Firehouse equipment doesn't have a BPM counter. Meeshi's mixer does and the Rocket's does, I'm pretty sure, but the Firehouse system is too antiquated. |
| |
Ah, I see.....well, if Ron's DJing, he knows the BPM....and his compilation CD's all have BPM for each song. I'm not sure really at what speed it all starts to unravel for me. |
| |
why would ron have a bpm reading for each song???? he plays like.....TWO kinds of music. Slow sucky campy shit and a little bit faster sucky campy shit. |
| |
Hey, Jake! I'd like you to make me a "Lindy by the Bay" compilation CD of some of your favorite swing tunes. I know it's alot to ask, but I respect your taste in swing music. (It's an outdoor event on concrete that's "floating" over a sand base, so it absorbs shock pretty well. We do put a light coat of sand down to make it smooth). Thanks, Jeff |
| |
If Osama Bin-Laden posted on here "All Americans will die, starting with the decadent and immoral Lindyhoppers" Jeff would respond, "Say can you make me a compilation CD? I want to get an international perspective and I admire your tastes and ability to entertain." |
| |
...and Ron would reply: "Can I get a free copy of your latest album?" |
| |
hahahaha! |
| |
Krista, you're like Ed McMahon. -Ron "old enough to remember Johnny Carson" Bloom |
| |
Ron, I'm stunned and apoplectic at your perverse concept of humor. In my opinion, your above post is the most tasteless thing ever uttered on this forum. I accept your apology in advance. Jeff |
| |
Kind of reminds me when Ron started the day off by saying..."I was totally excited to go the Firehouse, but when I got there and saw it was Dennis djing, I went home to read Harry Potter" (paraphrased quote) |
| |
Oh yeah, Ian, that's TOTALLY the same. |
| |
Am I the only person that thinks Jake's spewings on this forum are out-of-line? Just how bad does someone have to be, Jeff, before you won't be buddy-buddy with them? |
| |
yes, Ron. You are. |
| |
Ron, I wish Jake wouldn't single you out, but knowing him, and that he's always intentionally offensive, I guess I'm used to it and considering the source, just accept it and don't take offense to it. Kinda like Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy on an HBO comedy thing. (One of the many reasons I cancelled HBO years ago). Comedians can use profane language on TV. Your boss at work can't. Some people on this forum have that "profane comedian" style. It's not my style. I wish they wouldn't. But, as Leigh posted elsewhere, we are a family. You can pick your friends, but not your family. Well some people in this scene are my close friends. The others are STILL my family. Lindy Hop to me is that powerful. And Ron, I know you love women, not....well....what Jake said. We all KNOW that you're a MAJOR component in why everyone in the world loves coming to San Diego to dance!! You know it too. You must. |
| |
"Am I the only person that thinks Jake's spewings on this forum are out-of-line? Just how bad does someone have to be" The thread I referred to, by you, was pretty out of line in my opinion. I only remind you of it since you keep getting on Jeff for defending Jake. The only difference is Jake is barely out his teens and uses profanity, your well beyond your 20s but keep it clean. |
| |
Ron, why do you even care what i think or say? i only make an example of you and the "music" you play because it is so bad, it could make a deaf man weep in agony. |
| |
actually jeff, i'm working on a compilation for the pasadena lindy...thingy. lindy grove or what not. so when i get the capability to burn c.d.'s, i'll make you a copy. |
| |
Very cool. Thanks, Jake. |
| |
Have Meeshi or any of the other promoters ever looked into having the Rugcutter's Swing DJ spin an event? |
| |
Good question. I think someone might have done that when Lindy By the Bay first started. Anybody know for sure? |
| |
I think she would bring great energy to the Firehouse. |
| |
Who's "The Rugcutter's Swing DJ"? |
| |
I think her name is Ida. |
| |
She runs that radio show I was talking about on 88.3 Her name's Ida Garcia, I think. |
| |
Her name is Ida Garcia and I think she is great. She is so full of energy and enthusiasm for what she does, it's contagious. Maybe she could broadcast the show from Lindy by the Bay! |
| |
Let's do it!! |
| |
I remember she came to the Grand Opening of the La Jolla Marriott, and she's posted on this forum before, too. |
| |
Does anyone know how to get in touch with her? Ron, are you DJing Saturday? Maybe we could invite her to LBtB on Saturday from 2 to 5 and you both could trade off a bit. She could then get a feel for whether or not a live broadcast down the road is viable. |
| |
The only way I know is to call her up at the station on saturday mornings. Her show starts at 10:00 I think. |
| |
You can e-mail the station manager and she will put you in contact with the DJ's you need to reach. The e-mail addresses for the station manager and other administrators are listed on the website: http://www.ksds-fm.org/ |
