yeah, and the utilities are still sticking it to us (rate-payers/tax-payers).

I'm not usually one for conspiracies but doesn't it seem striking that in the middle of winter (lowest usage point) we were having stage 3 alerts? I was just in Houston for GSWLF. Downtown, I passed by Enron HQ: very nice expensive building they have there...

What makes you think that the winter is the lowest usage point for electric usage? Not heating your home in the dead of winter is a Southern California under 30 phenomenon.

I swear I wrote this like 2 hours ago. Wonder if I forgot to click send...

I got back from lunch at about 1pm today to find my building bathed in darkness. We had to help some people out of the elevator.

A conspiracy seems a little overdone to me... but I do think is stinks of idociy and lack of foresight.

"and the utilities are still sticking it to us"

The utilities are NOT sticking it to us. SCE and PG&E continue to charge only 6cents per kilowatt hour (that's why we are broke, cause we have to buy that power at 30cent + per kilowatt hour and are NOT allowed to pass on that expense.)

Enron was allowed to recover that extra expense (why is to much to explain here), thus the insane price hikes in the SD area. But it's still not them sticking it to you because they are just passing allong that power at rates that are still lower then what they are actually paying for it.

The real issue at hand is the Power Producers manipulation of the market, the morons at the PUC, and one Govenor Davis who sat on his ass to long, and the fact that no new generation has been built in CA for more then a decade.

"What makes you think that the winter is the lowest usage point for electric usage?"

Winter IS the lowest usage season for electricy. That's why this is such an issue now. You think it's bad now, wait till summer hits (if nothing continues to be done about this in the mean time.)

"but I do think is stinks of idociy and lack of foresight."

Exactly. Southern California Edison and PG&E warned the California State Government that this would happens back, oh almost a year ago now. What did they do? They sat on their asses. The warnings continued threw out the year... then boom, it happened. Califonria law makers were given plenty of time to fix it before it broke. Now that it's broken, they can't seem to fix it.

As for me... I live in Pasadena, Pasadena generates it's own power, so I don't have to worry about blackouts. That, and I doubt they will kill the power here at the headquarters.

Yeah, its unbelievable. The power producers ought to be able to raise rates they charge, if their costs go up, rather than go backrupt and have to get bailed-out!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Reuben Brown (Gurureuben) on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 - 05:26 pm: Edit

Power Producers costs have gone up only slightly compared to the rates they have been charging. It's called market manipulation. The utilities are going bankrupt because State law prohibits them to raising their rates accordingly. Enron was an exception to this, they were able to raise rates early, but still, they are capped.

So no Ron, it's not unbelievable that the Power Producers are allowed to raise their rates according to cost. What is unbelievable is that they are allowed to manipulate the market, charge excessive amounts, and that the utilities are NOT allowed to recover the cost over what they were paying.

Since I know you have trouble with math Ron, let explain it again, more completely. Buy: 30cents/kwh, Forced to Sell at: 6cents/kwh. Thats 24cents/kwh coming out of the utilities pockets, x 1000's of MEGAwatthours. Now that the utilities are broke though, it's California buying all the power and then selling it at that same ratio. In other words, the tax payers are buying the power, and then buying it again. Nice huh?

Are your referring to national usage or so-cal usage?

If power consumption is at its lowest during the winter, how is it, that even before the crisis my energy bills were always most expesnsive during the winter?

It all depends.

Perhaps you are one of few people who have all electric appliances, ie electric stove, electric water heater, electric dryer, and the biggest sucker, electric heating.

Most people do not. They do all this with gas.

Also, since you said "energy bill," and I believe Enron supplies both electricity and gas, this might be where the mixup is. Gas prices aren't fixed, and those have gone up, and that is probably where you are seeing the increased usage/cost.
