Does anyone know who is dj'ing this week at Clayton's? |
| |
It's supposed to be a 4-way rotation between me, Chris, Jeremy, and Meeshi. Unfortunately, I'm sick right now, so it might only be a 3-way rotation. |
| |
Chris is not in town this week either... |
| |
Well, I guess it might be a 2-way rotation. I wonder if Meeshi knows all of this... |
| |
he added brian abe to the rotation. now there's three. |
| |
Kudos to all the DJ's last, I think that includes Brian, Susan, Meeshi, Jeremy and even a couple by Peter Strom himself. The music was very versatile and fun. Lots of room for playing aound with it. And that performance/demonstrastion by Peter and Maggie was outstanding... WOW! |
| |
Is there a study hall at Clayton's tonight? There's a lot of workshop material I'd like to practice more before I start trying it on the dance floor. Or if nothing formal is planned, would anybody like to show up early and take over the back room? |
| |
I wasn't at the workshop or anything but I would be interested in showing up early even if it is jut to observe what was learned at the workshop. As far as study halls go, I think the last one we had was with Chis and Shana and that was over 3 weeks ago. Jeremy and I were talking about it last week at Clayton's and how it had just fizzled. Who knows?? What time is good to show up early? And who is going to Christmas on the Prado before hand? |
| |
Does anyone want to carpool from North County Area? This will be my first time at Clayton's Cafe, so I don't know any good parking places. Show me around? I have a tiny car, but I can fit 3 others.. and if you hold it together, we will make it to San Diego... Anyone? Give me a call at 760-489-9765. -charles |

I just wanted to thank all you- Luis, Heather, Amber, Karen, Katherine, Jonathan, Lo, Zannah- all ya'all. I had an insanely great time once I got up the guts to dance regardless of skill. I really had a blast and I look foreward to keep dancing with all of you. I hope I can convince some of my friends to come out and have a good time.. But it really was great- I haven't danced for years.. I can't wait to dance at the Firehouse or other venues. Even better- to someday dance with a live band and be able to just relax more with a great follow. |
| |
Charles your dream of danicng to a live band can be solved this week... and more than once for that matter. There is always a live band up at Neimans (this week is Chicago Six) in Carlsbad. Tuesday night the Rocket Christmas Party is featuring the Swingin' Kings, and Saturday night at the Champion Ballroom is Michael Carr and Swingtown. Of course there is individual threads for each of these so check them out for more information. It was great to meet yo last night. I encourage you to make dancing a weekly ritual. |
| |
hey gals... i suggest you all come out to clayton's tonight. we have a bunch of visitors, and they are all leads!!!! doug and ryan from LA, larry from new york, and ben and adam from seattle will all be out tonight...and they are all awesome! if any of you gals have noticed that most of our visitors seem to be follows, now's your opportunity to take advantage of this array of leads! |
| |
I desperatly want to go out tonight but I don't have a car anymore and I think I live too far north to carpool with anyone ...... right?... is san marcos on the way for anyone who wants a car buddy tonight? |
| |
hhhhhhhmmmmm I will take that as a no...... well if anyone is around who can carpool me sometime I will give them gas money and all that good stuff. let me know if you pass through san marcos on the way to any venue and you would take on another passenger. I am experiencing lindy withdrawls...... HELP! leigh(needs to get out more)steward |

Fastest song I played last night was about 215-220. It was "Your Father's Mustache" by Woodie Herman. The second fastest was "Diga, Diga Doo" by Artie Shaw, which was about 200-210. There was also "Razzle Dazzle" by Bill Haley which is about 200 I think. Pretty much everything else I played was significantly under that threshold, though there were a few that went up to about 170-180. Everyone seemed to do pretty good at those speeds, and the floor wasn't empty. Do I take it I should play more faster songs like that, maybe even push it up faster? Any comments on the songs themselves or the speed? P.S. Thanks to Charlie, Tim, Amy, Penny and the rest of you who seemed pretty enthusiastic about me playing fast stuff. And thanks everyone for the applause during and after my set. That really makes DJing worth it! I hope everyone has as much fun dancing as I do DJing. Remember that I'm always open to requests, questions, comments, and critiquing. |
| |
Hey Jeremy, I think you did a great job DJing last night. I think I danced to pretty much every song in your line up. There might have been one song that I didn't dance to, but only because I needed a break. I thoroughly enjoyed everything you played. Keep up the good work, and of course the bpm too. Cari |
| |
Clayton's rocked last night! The leads were a pleasure to dance with - I hope they enjoyed it as much as I and other follows did. I couldn't believe it was 12:30 when Melissa played the last song. I guess the saying "time flies when one is having fun" was made valid last night. |
| |
... Leigh (and anyone else from No. County) ~ Amber and I drive down to Clayton's most every Friday night. If you would like to carpool with us, we have room for 3 - and would be more than willing to bring anyone down with us. We usually show up for the lesson (8:30/9) and don't leave until it closes (12/12:30...). Email me and we'll make arrangements. ... Also, we go to Tia Juana's on Weds - and anyone is welcome to drive up to Vista and then carpool up with us to Irvine. |
| |
J, i was impressed (okay, i meant satisfied) w/ the mix at clayton's last night eventhough i caught only 45 min.'s of your DJ'ing (took kathy collins to dinner for her birthday beforehand). keep up the good work,...and uh, hee-hee , tell your wife again thanks for lending her shoes & socks. |
| |
thanx Amy!!!!! I will take you up on that offer..... that would be sooo nice of you to take me along when there is room. as soon as I can drive again I will taxi you around.... ok?!!! leigh(pixie wings)steward |
| |
ah shoot... i missed all the fun. but not next weekend. who's all comin' up to binge? |
| |
Amy, I live in North County as well, but am, at times, hard-pressed to get mah hubby to take me to Clayton's. Help!!! Zana |
| |
when I can drive again we could all switch off carpooling then we could all save on gas and it would be more fun than driving alone ...... for me at least. |
| |
I agree. If i had a ride or if I was the ride I think I might be more committed to going. |
| |
Jeremy, you played some good stuff. Since when did you start playing Mose Allison? I think I heard Doug play a Mose Allison, too. I thought I was the only one playing Mose! Cool. |
| |
it was a great night of dancing. unfortunately, two of our visitors didn't make it out...ben and adam from seattle. but, i had many awesome dances with doug, ryan, and larry. thanks to our visitors who made it out! i hope you come down more often. and, thanks to chance for all the awesome dances we had, too! jeremy, i enjoyed your dj'ing. i think you played a good mix of music. the few fast songs were nice, but i wouldn't suggest playing more than a few in a night. but, that's just me. |
| |
Zana - babe, I'd love to help you get to Clayton's. We missed you on Friday! Also... you're welcome to join us when we go to Irvine on Wednesdays... and anytime Champion is happening. Email me and I'll give you my number. |
| |
nonono, you get confussed Ron. YOU aren't the only one who plays Mose, YOU are the only one who plays stupid lame ass shit. I can see how one could get so confussed. yes. By the way, I wasn't very impressed with that doug dude. He seemed to be kind of...caught up in himself. very fond of himself. maybe he fondles himself. I dont know. |
| |
I've noticed Doug is very "understated" when he dances socially. I think it's because he matches his partner and is "caught up" with her, as opposed to using her to show off what he's capable of doing. He seems to just be very relaxed when he social dances. Many guys don't seem to be impressed with him, but the ladies are, and I'm sure that's of more concern to him. Just a hunch. |
| |
Not that any of you care, and not to be mean to someone I don't know....BUT! Jeff, when you say, the ladies are impressed with him...Yes, I consider myself a lady, and I saw his ALHC routine, and was unimpressed. Thought his moves were boring. Bland. I hadn't seem him before, and thinking back to Reuben's quote from Artie Shaw seemed to be quite accurate. Just trying to show you that there is more than one opinion from the "ladies". Krista |
| |
to counter krista's remark (which i would do more often, but i won't put the effort into starting a shoot-out with someone who's every comment i disagree with)...personally, i love dancing with doug. i think he looks wonderful dancing, and feels even better than he looks. he always takes care of his partner and makes her feel like she's sharing in the making of the dance, unlike many other leads who make the follow feel like simply an extention of his arm. doug has an awesome attitude towards the dance and his partner, and he always has a smile on his face. i could've danced with him all night long on friday, and i would recommend that every follow should dance WITH him at least once before they pass judment. |
| |
"to counter krista's remark (which i would do more often, but i won't put the effort into starting a shoot-out with someone who's every comment i disagree with).." haha!! Rad!! |
| |
I've never seen Doug "perform" a lindy routine in a competition. I just have witnessed what Mel stated above, and heard that he has won some copetitions in the past, so some "judges" must like what they see. |
| |
Awww, come on. I think this forum needs a good catfight. Rawwrrr, hehe.... |
| |
For a verbal catfight, I'd have to put my hard earned greenbacks on Krista... she's meaner and nastier to the core (that's why she turns me on, so). Melissa might be able to drum up some mean-ness, but being an overall nice person, I think it would be harder... Back alley brawl.. have to think about that one. |
| |
geez, andy. i'm not sure if i should smile and say thanks or reach over and smack you across the head. hehehe |
| |
smack him! smack him! |
| |
It was totally a compliment to you... but feel free to smack me anytime! ~8^) |
| |
nonononono Jeff, you have it all backwards. It is VERY obvious to me when a guy is dancing with a girl just to show off his lame ass shit. You can always tell. He'll be dancing with an average or above average follow, and yet she will have more than just a little difficulty trying to figure out what the hell he is leading her into. Sure, it happens to all leads/follows. A breakup of connection is inevitable at least sometimes. But I sat outside and just watched that dude dance for a good halfhour and could tell it was ALL ABOUT HIM. Not just because of the reaction to what he was doing by the follow, but other things too. Like for instance the look on his face of complete superiority. The ridiculous footwork that made me try to guess just what song he was dancing to in his head (It's Raining Men, probably). And above all, the dude was off time throughout half the songs! I'm no dance judge, and I'm certainly not the best dancer anywhere, nor do I think I am. I just say what I think. I have no beef with the dude at all, neither do I want one. And this is not a burn or a scathing or anything. It's just an observation. I met him once and he was completely full of himself and it shows in his dancing. Big deal. I dont really care. It's just amazing to me how oblivious people are. And Ron, you still suck. just had to throw some poo your way for old times sake. |
| |
My god, aliens took over Jake's body! I thought I was going agree with a Jake-post. Well in the end I agree completely with his 1st 4 sentences (I've had dances with "great" leads and had no fucking clue what they were trying to lead 'cause they were so busy admiring their own arses). No opinion about the rest of the post having neither danced socially with Doug, nor really watched him. |
| |
Nonononono, Nat. You just got over an extremely long "Senior Moment", so it's understandable if you didn't agree in the past. No harm done. |
| |
Damn, and I was so sure that the bse shots were doing wonders for the dementia, but it's obviously all been in vain. |
| |
all in vein.... maybe sublingual would work better. |
| |
Hey, with the Lindy Binge going on, is Clayton's up and running tonight? And if yes, who will be dj'ing? |
| |
I believe I will be DJing, possibly along with Meeshi, though I'm not sure. I have the feeling it's going to be pretty empty. |
| |
Thank you, Jeremy! |
| |
Hey guys! I have a few beginners that want to learn lindy hop for the first time. They are interested in possibly going to Clayton's this Friday. But I'm concerned that the class might be too advanced for them. Are the classes still being held there at 9PM? If so, are they appropriate for beginners? ~Lisa Rae |
| |
yes, the classes are held at 9pm and they are focused to fit the level of the people who attend. each week we have new people, usually very basic beginners, so the classes start from scratch. every once in a while people have a little background so we can build a bit on what they already know. i think it should be perfect for your friends. |
| |
Thanks Melissa! |
| |
Lisa Rae, I still think your picture in your profile is cool. Are you liking San Diego? |
| |
Hahahaha! Thanks! I actually had to go check to see which pic you were talking about! OH yes! SD definitely agrees with me! Only one complaint I can think of - I had to start using moisturizer (skin AND hair) for the first time in my LIFE! Still looking for a hair conditioner that moisturizes enough without weighing my hair down. Anyone have any recommendations? Price is no object!!! ~Lisa Rae |
| |
Okay, I guess I just have a dirty mind because, after I read your post, the first comment that popped into my head had something to do with the "hair gel" scene in There's Something About Mary.... |
| |
Oh NO!!!! You bad, bad boy!!! |
| |
Well, it didn't weigh down her hair, did it? |
| |
what's the hap'nins at Clayton's tonite? who's on the wheels of steel? |
| |
hahaha...nice terminology, Andy. |
| |
I think that unless otherwise announced, every Friday is "DJ MADNESS . . . with DJs Chris, Dennis, Jeremy and Meeshi." (quoted from the calendar) |
| |
I'll be there tonight. |
| |
How are you feeling, Dennis? |
| |
Been better. But I'm okay... more or less. |
| |
Don't go contaminating everyone tonight...they don't even like your healthy germs! |
| |
Don't go contaminating everyone tonight...they don't even like your healthy cooties! |
| |
Okay, sorry about the whack DJing last night. I was in a weird mood, plus I had no headphones to preview songs. Oh well. |
| |
By the way, Dennis, I think that was definitely the shortest set I've heard anyone play. |
| |
Yes, but did I talk enough, though? |
| |
Well, I don't know. The song is roughly 3:30 and you talked for about 30-45 seconds. You probably could have stretched it out a bit more. (LOL!) |
| |
who's djing tonight? |
| |
Same as always. Me, Chris and Dennis. Last I heard Dennis and Chris are both coming for sure. |
| |
Great night! Nobody knew it would be our last there until we arrived! It was so fun having a "Gaslamp" venue! I'm really going to miss Clayton's. Thanks, Meeshi, for all you did to make it happen. |
| |
Man, what a drag! :-( (sigh) |
