Hi all, its me Tony from LA. I was just wondering if any of you are going to be at memories on Thursday or Friday? Any chance at all? A friend of mine said a bunch of you went last Thursday and I am sorry I missed out on dancing with you all. Hope everyone down there had a great Christmas and new year. See ya Tony |

Memories Closing?? Got forwarded an e-mail from Mo that there is a public meeting on Monday to discuss the possibility of putting in a restaurant where Memories is located. Any truth to this Reuben??? That would be a bummer if Memories were to close. |
| |
Just got off the phone with Mo, as well as read the main email from the co-owner John Crist. Everyone please read the following link and provide any support you can: http://www.delphi.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=socalswing&msg=2836.1 Thanks. |
| |
No, no, no! Anything but that indignity... Does anyone have any hard facts on this rumor? -HopMichael |
| |
Having trouble with that link, Reuben. Please re-post. |
| |
Hmm, it works for me. If you're having trouble with it, just go here http://www.delphi.com/socalswing and look for the thread entitled "Help Save Memories." All the cold hard facts are there straight from the source. |

[As taken from Jive Junction] I am posting this on behalf of the owner of Memories. Please read. ====================================================================== Dear friends of Memories- I know everyone is concerned about the future of Memories. I am writing this letter to address those concerns and tell you everything that is happening so you will be completely informed. There are plenty of rumors going around. Here are the facts: The City of Anaheim posted a notice outside our door that they are having a public hearing to discuss tearing this building down and building two fast food restaurants in its place. A City Planner confided in me that he thought the odds of the re-zoning going through was about 50/50. There are several aspects that they are agonizing with. The first is the traffic. There is a tremendous amount of traffic on Tustin Avenue during the day. With the traffic light at La Palma, it is sometimes almost impossible to make the right turn out of Memories onto Tustin. And if you are going Southbound on Tustin, it is equally tough to make the left hand turn into Memories. There is really not good access into and out of the lot that Memories is on, to acommodate the flow of traffic that another El Pollo Loco and another Starbucks might create during the day. Plus, they like the building that Memories is in. The last thing they want to see is another landmark be torn down and another fast food restaurant go up. Although the building is a great example of early California architecture, it is not located in a historical district. There was mention of moving the building to another location, but even I don't know if that makes any sense. Even though the City loves the building, they are not in the habit of buying buildings just because they like them. They are very pro-business owner and if the owner wants to tear down a building, they have every right to. Plus, the City is somewhat aware of Memories. They know we do dancing but that is about it. We have no police record to speak of-pertaining to fights or public drunkeness. But they are not aware of the loyalty everyone has to Memories, how everyone has embraced Memories in their heart, and how many people call Memories "home." But the City is also very forward-looking. What if dancing dies and Memories goes under 3 years from now and the building sits vacant, while they could have pre-empted that by re-zoning it now? Ultimately it is the owner's right to do whatever they want to make the most amount of money. Obviously the land is more valuable with two fast food restaurants rather than one sit-down restaurant. Many people have asked me why I don't just buy the building. It is for exactly the reason I just stated immediately above. The owners are asking fast food prices for the property, when it is really still only zoned to be a sit-down restaurant. If I bought the property at those high prices and if I ever needed to sell the property, I could never get what was paid for it. However, if the zoning does not go through, perhaps the price would be lowered and I could buy it. The City said they would assist me in finding a new location if indeed we do have to move. And it is my intention to move if I have to. So don't worry. I do want to keep Memories alive. And I know that I have to recreate the same atmoshere or even make it better. All the interior of Memories I already own, including dance floor, sound system, lighting, seating, and not to mention foosball table (I still have a sense of humor!). So many things would be exactly the same, so you would immediately be somewhat comfortable in a new place. But we may be able to stay where we are if the zoning does not get changed. And if we do have to move, we still have pleny of time to enjoy Memories as we know it. The plans would still have to go through the bureaucracy of the City of Anaheim. I am told that there are still some revisions to be made on the plans. Then the property would go into escrow and per our lease, we have to be given 60 days notice. The owners of the property still tell me that this could take quite a while. And I will keep you informed along the way. In the meantime.... I invite you to come to the meeting and speak to any or all of the several points I outlined above. The meeting will be in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 South Anaheim Boulevard, Anaheim on Monday, April 9 at 1:30 pm. The plans are available for review at 11am. If you cannot be there, you are welcome to send a letter stating your thoughts on the matter. Mo is creating a grass roots effort to organize everyone to go to the meeting or he will read your letters there. Please send your emails to him at modanz@aol.com. Please copy them to me so I can see your sentiments. It is important for me to stay neutral at the meeting. Though I will speak, my words will be tainted by the fact that I am the business-owner and have much to lose if the building is torn down. But your words and letters may carry much more clout, with no financial ramifications, just the chance of losing a place where eveyone loves to dance. I await your responses ... johncrist@aol.com I hope to see you soon at Memories. |

HopMichael, there is a City of Anaheim Planning Commission meeting on Monday, June 4. John would like lots of support, so everyone who can attend, please do! Email me for info. |
| |
Well, since money talks, Mems will be torn down to make way for a chicken shack and a coffee stand. The property was rezoned yesterday and escrow is going forward. We have no idea how long we have before the dozers come to knock it down. John is already looking for a new place to set up. People have suggested he just move into a warehouse space and cut his expenses, but he wants to reopen in a place just as nice as Mems is now. He even thinks he can move the upstairs murals. I will be really sad to see it go. I met some amazing people there. If I win the lotto, I'll buy it. Know any millionaires with money to burn? |
| |
Ain't that just like America? -Hop "The business of America is business" Michael |
| |
Wow, just what Anaheim really needs is another place to peddle dead chickens and push an addictive drug down our thoats! Congratulations Anaheim! You've pretty much eliminated the only real reason why I come up to OC in the first place(I've been over Disneyland years ago and your sports teams SUCK!)! I'm going to miss Memories. (Sigh) |
| |
When will it be torn down? When is the last night going to be? Not for a while right? That will be a huge night. |
| |
And now the Satin Ballroom is closing too? TIME TO SAY GOOD-BYE? We have been bombarded with questions why June 16 will be the last dance this summer. What exactly does that mean? Will there be no more Satin Ballroom dances? The answer is, quite frankly, that we do not know at this point. What we do know is that we need some time off to pursue other projects, and to cater to other activities and obligations. Since the first event in 1998, the Satin Ballroom has been carving out a place in modern swing history and it is fair to say that the memories will be with us for a long time to come. However, far from earning a great deal of money, it has always been a labor of love, carried by the idealism of the many people who were involved with it. We strongly and passionately believe that without a large crowd of energetic dancers in front of them, Big Bands lose a lot of their sharpness as time passes. Without dancing, the music itself may degenerate into what we call “Las Vegas Style” show tunes, having lost the fire and energy of the way it was originally played. This is why we see ourselves not really as promoters, but rather as conservators of what we consider a proud American heritage. The enjoyment, and therefore the preservation of the authentic music and dancing styles of the ‘30s and ‘40s is and has always been the Satin Ballroom’s purpose. Contrary to some people’s belief, we did not make tons of money in the process. (On the contrary, most of the time, we were lucky when we could pay the bills). Unfortunately, this situation meant that we had to neglect many other aspects of our lives for a lack of time, and it meant that our careers suffered, for the same reason. This summer, the power crisis poses additional problems for us, which is why we took this as a sign that we should better hold our breath, and think about the next step for a while. Whatever happens, we will keep you posted! |
| |
Don't worry, John WILL reopen Mems nearby. (Just to spite the city of Anaheim, I hope it will be in another city.) He wants to find a central location in OC so the LA crowd and we poor, unfortunate inland residents (me) won't have to drive very far. He's ruling out South OC, so sorry, San Dieg-ites, you'll still have a drive. John thinks he can rip up the dance floor on a Tuesday morning, relocate and reopen by a Friday night. I'm sure he'll get lots of volunteers to help him out. No dates yet, so keep coming to Mems!! Anyone who needs a place to crash at 3am on a Saturday night, just let me know (that is if I'm not in SD!) I'm just a 20 minute drive away. Memories Is The Place I Like To Dance!!!! El Pollo Crackhead and Star*ucks are Of The Devil!! |
| |
Sucks about Satin Ballroom, also. Wonder if anyone wants to take it on for the summer? |
| |
Stupid Anaheim city-council members and their narrow-sited decision to boost short-term tax revenues. Knowing politicians, not long from now, after the OC Register runs numerous articles, saying young people have no where to hang out on weekends, they'll probably propose raising the taxes to fund some dumb plan to build a youth-center or something, when Memories, because of its unique zoning, already provides a valuable service to the community. Ugh, politicians. Starbucks sucks! |
| |
You guys probably all know that Memories is moving to Whittier...where the hell is Whittier, anyway? ;-) Here's a link to a recent news article about the new location. I hope the link works! http://www.whittierdailynews.com/index.asp?puid=1599&spuid=1599&indx=925403&article=on |

Dang that's about 102 miles from La Jolla according to MapQuest |

Here it is: Old building to become a dance hall June 14, 2001 By Susan McRoberts Staff Writer WHITTIER -- John Greenleaf will be reincarnated as a swing dance club in Uptown. Formerly John Greenleaf's Pub, the two-story, turn-of-the-century building at the northeast corner of Philadelphia Street and Comstock Avenue has been purchased by John Crist, owner of Memories, an all-ages swing and dance club now operating in Anaheim. Crist plans to move his club -- lock, stock and dance floor -- to Uptown Whittier in the span of four days at the beginning of August. "We'll have everything ready here and we'll close Memories on a Tuesday. We have very good Tuesdays," Crist said Wednesday as he waited inside the dusty building for a utility company crew. "Then, we'll have four days to move the dance floor, the chandeliers, the stage lighting and sound system and set it up here before our grand opening." Memories/Whittier may open the first week in August, he said, if everything goes according to plan. Crist has not yet applied for the conditional use permit he will need to operate an alcohol-serving business in Uptown. He is well aware of the location's lousy reputation. As the Iguana Cantina in 1998, the place was plagued by problems with permits and police. In 1999, it resurfaced as John Greenleaf's Pub, but police again were called so often that by August 2000 Greenleaf's lost it's conditional use permit over security issues. The pub closed for good that month. "We've overcome a bad reputation before," Crist said. "When we moved into our current location, it was a strip club. We had to overcome that and it wasn't easy." The Anaheim club, at 1074 N. Tustin Ave., is well-known among swing dance and big band aficionados in Orange and Los Angeles counties. The West Coast Swing Club calls it their home. Crist said the group, with about 200 members, meets certain Sundays, and the organization has agreed to follow Memories all the way to Whittier. Crist also intends to serve food. Preliminary plans indicate that food will be 80 percent of the business and beverages only 20 percent, according to city officials. "We bring in a different kind of crowd," Crist said. "You'll see most of our patrons have red cups. That means they're just drinking water. People come to dance, not to sit around and drink." The building housing Memories in Anaheim has been sold and will be torn down, Crist said. That meant he had to find another suitable venue or close Memories. "I looked all over Orange County and there was nothing that had the right feel," he said. "Then, I learned about this through a (newspaper) article... and it was just right." The property sat vacant for nearly a year. Last week, Crist opened the heavily-curtained upstairs windows, letting in the hazy June sunshine. He fell in love with the building. "I have a thing about history and I want to learn all about this building," he said. Where there are now black walls with red flames rising from the floor, Crist sees a 1940s-era ballroom with a stage large enough for a big band. Where the ceiling is high and also painted black, Crist envisions elegant lighting fixtures with artwork on the walls depicting Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. "I think Memories and Uptown Whittier will be a great match," Crist said. -- Susan McRoberts can be reached at (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3029, or by e-mail at sue.mcroberts@sgvn.com. © 1999-2001 MediaNews Group, Inc. and Los Angeles Newspaper Group, Inc. |

I love Whittier! Great! Farther for San Diegans but a cute part of "L.A." town to go to Memories, spend the night, and then shop, shop, shop the next day. Are they bringing the floating wood dance floor? |
| |
hicccup! Oops, excuse me! |
| |
They'll have the same dance floor. Hopefully they'll fix the dead spot from the water leak at the current location! It sounds like a cool building, too bad its so far away. There are already so many LA dance venues they'll be competing with, also. |
| |
There are already so many LA dance venues on the WEST side. This one is on the far EAST side. |
| |
Whittier = hometown of Richard M. Nixon Whittier = hometown of Gene Abad No coincidence Therefore, bad people come from Whittier. :-o |
| |
Waaah, I'm still going to whine about it! My commute to Mems will be doubled and it still will be the closest dance venue to me except for Shesha's Sunday evenings. I know, maybe that's MY fault for living in the toolies. At least I'm not from Whittier! ;-) |
| |
Therefore, bad people come from Whittier. :-o Gene, have you even ever been to whittier? |
| |
Tim, for your info, I grew up there from age 5 through 18. I was up close and personal with that place, otherwise I wouldn't have posted that knock on Whittier and myself. Or are you asking if I've been there lately? I can count with one hand how many times I've been there since. You know how old I am so you can do the math yourself. Otherwise, how's Santa Cruz treating you? |
| |
Besides Tim, I was just messin' around. Really. :-) |
| |
Anyone know of a place to swing in the San Bernardino area? Now that Memories is closing I don't know where to go. I just wanna swing, man. I mean, I'll go to LA, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. Can someone please help me out? I can be reached at billagoon@hotmail.com. Thanks, Bill |
| |
Bill, Good luck. When I was new and didn't know any better, I went to "The Brandin' Iron" in San Bernardino on Sunday nights. I don't know if they still do swing there on that night, but its a short drive and worth a try. They even had a couple of halfway decent live bands there. I haven't been for about two years, but back then, the crowd was about 1/3 westies, 1/3 cowboy swingers and 1/3 east coasters. "Do you know the lindy basic?" was a question I asked back then. It has a nice dance floor, and they had east coast lessons by some good teachers. I stopped going because I shaved my head, gave away all my posessions and became a fully indoctrinated Memories girl. Just kidding. The only other places to dance in the IE are at various studios. Good luck in your quest. Sherri |

Speaking of Memories, John is shooting for a grand finale party on Monday night, August 6. You'd better believe I'll be there, dressed in black. Of course, he'll be reopening at the new location four days later. Yes, that's good, but no, I'm not going to stop whining. |
| |
Bad Kitty, Hey, is it official about Monday 8/6? Carpool, anyone? This is gonna rock. -Hop "Long live the king. The King is Dead. Long live the king." Michael |

Yes, according to the last email I received. Last night they announced "Late Night Louis" on Friday August 3 to commemorate Louis Armstrong's birth on that date 100 years ago. There will be contests and giveaways. That might be a good night for you guys to come up if a long commute on Monday is too tough. If anything changes regarding Monday Aug 6, I'll post it right away. |
| |
Everyone should go on Monday. I went up for the Late Night Louis and it was packed. It was so much fun! Monday should be even better and it's your last chance to dance at a truly great venue. |
| |
Who is going tonight? Anyone? |
| |
Ernie used to come up on Monday nights regularly. I hope HopMichael has the energy to come after the Seattle exchange. Also, check with Kermit. He may come and crash at my place which is about 20 minutes from Mems. |
| |
If you guys come tonight, don't leave your purse or wallet lying around. All the publicity has attracted lookie-loos and several people got ripped off on Friday night. Sigh. |
| |
Dang...that sucks. Dennis and I will be there. |
| |
It was SOOOOO fun!! Sad, but fun. I didn't get home til 6am. |
| |
Only there for 2 and a half hours. But, oh, such sweet hours they were! Lots of my favorite dancers were in attendance to bid adieu to the old Memories. John kept everyone rapt with the story of how he came to own Memories and how he let in the first Lindy Hoppers to dance! Sigh. Nostalgia was in the air. -Hop "memories of Memories" Michael |
| |
I KNEW "Auld Lang Syne" would be played that night. Thank goodness Reuben found a really cool version. Yeah, it was sad, I've had so many important things happen there. I was a mouth-gaping-open newbie there, amazed at the dancers' skills, wondering if I'd ever be able to do it. Its the first (and probably last) place I did an aerial. It is the site of a couple ill-fated romances, but its also the place I really talked to Gene for the first time. Several of my friends were looking forward to having our wedding receptions there and opening up to everyone at Late Night Lindy. Demolishing the building before we left was pretty cool. I was happy to leave with a couple roses to press and with a roof tile. Everything changes, and now we have to move on (and drive farther). Maybe the new Mems will be twice as good. |
| |
if you guys havent checked out the new memories yet, you should! its awesome...i went for the bal/swing championships last weekend and it was rad. the upstairs is huge and its painted really cute (thanks partly to mike) i know its a little further drive but it is so worth it. |
| |
Upstairs floor at the New Memories is SWEEET! Slick enough to slide in sneakers! Acoustics could be tweaked but were good. The floor is almost too open. Kinda lost the intimacy of "gathering pockets" in the old Mems. Should be a great place for big events. -HopM |
| |
I like the new memories a lot better. |
| |
Ok... since, cafe savoy is closed friday... who wants to go to Memories, like Ian suggested??? if ya do... post here... yahhhh---David |
| |
whatcha doing...is it revive old threads month or something? |
| |
you know i could've started a new thread... but i'd hate to see the pitiful amount of responses i'd get to my new thread. I hate threads with like... 3 responses.... SOOO... who's up for Memories? I've never been---David |
| |
David, The old Mems is legendary, as you may have heard. Not sure who dances there anymore, since I've been gone from that scene for awhile. I've heard Friday nights are the best night anymore. The new Mems is farther from us in SD, but is still a pretty cool venue - the building is from circa 1910 - there's a really nice floor upstairs. You'll like it. Not sure if Gene & I will be making the drive...I understand he still needs to do laundry from the Seattle Exchange. We'll let you know if we decide to go. |
| |
Lame excuse -- he can do laundry on Saturday. I haven't done mine yet either. |
| |
Just thought I would drop in on this thread. The new Memories is a killer joint. We were up there last night to play a benefit concert for ATOMIC Magazine and the place just blew me out of the water. From talking to the owner I discovered that the building was erected in 1902 making it one hundred years old. The big room is upstairs, which by the way had me cursing my decision of years ago to become a drummer as there was no elevator, and is really a step back in time. The room has a huge polished wood dance floor surrounded by booths and all the ambiance of a swing era dance hall. It really is a great place. Big Mickey www.jumpjones.com |

So yah... does anybody want to go???? give me a call before 5 at (858)243-1328... David |
