It's usually $5. Guess the hot ticket
requires $8. I like that place. It's where
I started dancing 6 years ago. Jim, who gave
me my first lesson, still teaches and works
the door. Always a nice vibe in there and
friendly dancers. I've actually been going
there every Thursday for the past few months
instead of the Firehouse. But last week I hit
the Firehouse first and went to Tio Leo's to
enjoy the band and the air conditioning!.

Tomorrow night it's gonna be a mad house. It'll
be packed!

Thursday, September 25th looks like fun at Tio Leo's, featuring RUDY “TUTTI” GRAYZELL - original rockabilly dude from the 50's used to tour with Elvis...and Hot Rod Lincoln. Should be good.

Tio Leo's is at 5302 Napa St. off of Morena Blvd.

I made it. Three venues in one night. Tio Leo's was the icing on the cake. I expected to see more dancers there, but Nelson and others didn't know about it. People should really check out events on this forum. So many don't, it seems, and miss out...oh, well.

By the way, I have consistantly found that "9:00 pm" means 10:00 or 10:30. Has anyone else found this to be the norm?

FYI, Swing Diego is here this weekend (for info go to http://www.swingdiego.com) starting tonight. I don't think they check for wristbands after about midnight, so if anyone wants to check out some of the best wcs dancing in the country just drop in really late. The dancing goes until 5:00am or so. I don't know how late it goes tonight since it's just the pre-event earlybird dance.

"By the way, I have consistantly found that "9:00 pm" means 10:00 or 10:30. Has anyone else found this to be the norm?"

That tends to be the norm at any venue. For any show. No show at the Casbah starts on time, that's for sure! It always throws me when 9 really means 9.

Jane, do you know if you can buy a pass for one night only at Swing Diego?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Janeh (Janeh) on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:56 pm: Edit

I think one-day passes are available and include all open dancing + watching the comps. Tonight the ballroom closes for dinner at 8:00 and reopens at 8:45 with the high level comps starting at 9:00 and ending ???? They have 5-20 min of open dancing between each of the comps. It says to "dress to impress", so don't wear jeans or sweats : )
I'm sure they would sell you an evening pass at the door, I just don't know how much it would cost. Last night the Champions Strickly Swing Finals (pretty amazing, I might add) started at midnight. I did notice that by that time, no one was checking for wristbands. Open dancing started around 1:00 and went all night. I left at 4:30 and there were still 100+ dancers, most of them the pros and other advanced competitors. It was a great late-night show watching them play.If you don't go for the whole night, come over after All Things Swing and dance for free!
By the way, late-night music in westie world is similar to that at lindy events, and groove-style wcs dancing is awesome to watch.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Badkitty (Badkitty) on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 01:34 pm: Edit

Thanks for the info, Jane! I think Laurel and I will see you late tonight.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Janeh (Janeh) on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 03:41 pm: Edit

FYI
"dress to impress" does not mean evening dresses. Most women still wear pants, just nice ones. And most don't get "glittered up", just really nice tops rather than the usual tee shirts and casual tanks. And by late night, many of the jeans and tee-shirts will have returned to the dance floor.

Also, note that all the table seating is reserved. The seats behind them are open seating, and standing room wherever you can find it is open. After the comps, some table seating becomes available on the risers as people leave.

Be sure you come find me.

Laurel and I had a really good time there! We saw enough leads we know to get some dances in, with Jeff, Luis and Dave. Luis is doing much better, by the way, and we told him he must come back to LBtB soon. Rizell was so busy with the ladies that we didn't have a chance to dance with him.

Plus, we were asked to dance by a LOT of other westie guys. They were VERY nice to us and patient with our lindy hop style.

Again, the MEN asked the WOMEN to dance. Imagine that.

We also noticed something else right away - there are a lot of GOOD looking westie men. And young ones, too! Hmmmm... I might have to go over to the dark side more often...

Jane, thanks for all the info. It was fun seeing you there, especially watching you dance with the hottest guy in the room! ;-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Janeh (Janeh) on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 04:59 pm: Edit

His name is Lars.
And yeah, they are young. I'd say at least 50% of the regular attendies at westie events are in their 20's. The level/quality of dancing is unbelievable in all the age groups!
You should have come back on Sunday. They weren't checking for wristbands all day. The last of the comps started about 3pm. The dancing started at about 8:00 and went until the floor was completely disassembled (about 4:00am). It was a really great weekend.
Check out this website for videos of the winning performances

Poor Sherri! Her hottie was waylaid by Jane, hee hee! Pssst, Jane we did get in for free. Just a wink and a wiggle and we were in! Okay, I'm lying. There was nobody at the door and we just walked right in.

I must say that I was fascinated with the really young dude dressed in the baggy jeans, T-shirt and knit cap. He looked like a great lead and he dared to dress differently from everyone else. Did you dance with him, Jane? BTW, Sherri, I did NOT have the hots for him! Unlike you, panting after Lars - hee hee, just teasing!!

Parker and Jessica looked fantastic in the competition (was it the showcase division?)! I'll have to see if they won. I bet all of you guys out there would have gotten a woody watching that routine. Honest.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Badkitty (Badkitty) on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 11:12 pm: Edit

LOL Laurel! You have to admit that guy was really hot. Tall, dark and gorgeous, with glasses! He looks like Carl from Love Actually.

At least my guy is an adult! Laurel, you're a cradle robber!

Regarding Laurel's "woody" comment, yes, the Parker and Jessica performance was pretty intense. I'd have to say that a lot of the west coast social dance styling is more sexy than lindy hop, however, it still doesn't come close to the short-lived (and sorely missed) Cheap Ass Blues nights.

Hey, did you notice that the title of this thread is "Tio Leo's?" Oh, well...

All right, Sherri, your guy was totally hot in a yuppy way, but at least my boy danced better than yours! Even Westie Jeff thought so. Hah!

Okay, we'll turn this back over to Tio Leo's...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Badkitty (Badkitty) on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - 12:44 pm: Edit

Your boy had a very minimalist style.
My guy won the novice jack & jill, so good for him! Besides, when they look that good, who cares how they dance? ;-)
OK, NOW Tio Leo's can have the thread back.

I had gone country dancing at InCahoots with a freind, but I headed back over to Tio Leo's and poked my head in about 10:30 during a band break. The place was packed. I saw no place to sit or even to stand. I decided it would be an uncomfortably crowded dance floor, so I bailed.
I'll be at Gaitor by the Bay all weekend, so I'll get my live music hit there.
If you go, I'm teaching the zyde-swing class on Sat. and Sun., and Spins/turns while Swingin' Kings is setting up on Sat. Come introduce yourself.

Jane
