Hey, everyone! Janet, a dancer from San Franciso, is in town checking out graduate schools ... and the local dance scene (not necessarily in that order). Come out tonight and show her what fun it is to dance in San Diego! |
| |
I will be there for sure! Can't wait, only about 10 more hours to go. I am going through dance withdrawls. AAAAAH! |
| |
Girl Scout cookies have arrived! If you ordered cookies from me I will be bringing them to the Rocket tonight. Only a few more hours until you can be in Girl Scout heaven. See you tonight, Cari |
| |
I'll be DJing tomorrow at the Rocket. So if you haven't been making it to the Rocket recently, tomorrow's the day! |
| |
I think Michelle wants to go out for her first evening dancing since she's gotten better. Anybody else planning on being at the Rocket this week? |
| |
I'm ususally there if I'm in town, but the last few months have been somewhat disheartening. |
| |
COME ON, everybody go to the Rocket tomorrow! WOO-HOOOOO! (I know what you mean, Nat) |
| |
I'll be there! My friend, Bridgette(Queen B from yehoodi) from Denver will make an appearance as well. She was here for our New Year's exchange. Now with the demise of Clayton's will there be an urgency to support the venues we have left? With declining attendance week after week, will the Rocket be the next to go? What can be done to save it? |
| |
Jim & Margaret have gone all out to advertise it, they got tons of people for the Halloween thing, but those people didn't stick around, unfortunately. It's not dead yet, though. Gene, are you sick of "Come Out and Play" by Dick Cheese? I've only played it at the Firehouse, I think, it may be time to break in the Rocket crowd to your song. |
| |
hmm, I think I might make it, it's been a while, so I think it is due time.... |
| |
keep playing the Cheese! i think he rocks. i only go to the firehouse though so be sure to play it there!! |
| |
Stranded Lindy Follow Aahhhh!!! I was leaving to go to the Rocket and I got a flat. Some nice people changed it for me, but they said I can't go on the freeway with my spare or I will get a ticket. I am SUPER DUPER BUMBED. I REALLY wanted to go tonight to see everyone, and of course Ron is DJing. |
| |
hi Cari, missed you. Actually didn't go to the dance, but did go to Denny's afterwards Duked it out with Jim and Margie on every possible marketing strategie. They kept hitting back with "the best marketing is being friendly and excited about lindy hop" the one thing that I did come away with is the idea of dancing with one new person a week and really talking to them and teaching them a couple steps. I'll be a Jeff: I won't just dance with them. I'll stick with them until they feel at least somewhat confident in what they are doing. Maybe 20 minutes out of my night. Not bad... |
| |
It was good night at the Rocket, I had a good time DJing and dancing. There were about 50 people there, and that is more than some nights in the recent past. There was a follow shortage, however, Beth and Cari, you missed out. I had good particularly good dances with Jane, traveler dancer Cari, and this new follow Shana, who seems to have picked up Lindy Hop thoroughly in 2 months with no lessons. And she smiles a lot! Some people have natural talent.... and then there's me... |
| |
i was thinking of going to the rocket last night. i bought the coolest pair of pants at a vintage expo i attended in san fran last weekend, and i wanted to try them out dancing. but, there was a brand new episode of smallville on from 9pm-10pm and then i got a phone call. i'm glad you guys had fun. maybe i'll catch you some other tuesday. |
| |
That Smallville episode was pretty lame. I want more kryptonite-generated bad guys. -Hop "Everyone in life has a double" Michael |
| |
I think you should punish Gene for introducing Dick Cheese to your scene. Play it every time you see him. ;-) |
| |
I read that Smallville is planning on casting someone to make and appearance as Bruce Wayne. I like the show, and have been watching it, but I hope they plan on going somewhere with it. It seems like they are. But, come on, when is he going to fly? Where's the laser vision? And what's up with Lex Luthor? Is he going to be a bad guy or a good guy? I want to know! I'm on the edge of my seat! |
| |
And what happened to Roswell? Remember that show? With the cute aliens, and Tom Hanks's son, Colin. Did they just quietly cancel it? |
| |
i like smallville. i never read the comic books, but chance says that some of the stuff is sticking pretty close to the actual comic. as we have seen in prior episodes, superman has to slowly learn about each of his super powers. that's what makes it interesting. in the movie, he just has all those powers. now we get to learn how he found out about them and developed them. i think it's pretty cool! |
| |
Lex Luthor's character is fantastic! There's the vague notion that he's just on the shady side of things and yet he remains Clark's friend. He's not a complete evil character but barely balanced on the line between good and bad. He slick in talking and has the money to patch up his mistakes. I love that ambivalence. You wonder when he's going to go completely down the dark path -- sort of like Anakin Skywalker. I thought Clark already levitated briefly while sleeping in an early episode. No outright flying yet but a lot of fast running. I like Smallville way better than the movies because it shows a teenager discovering his abilities and his foibles. Much like early Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes. Lots of teen angst and anxieties anthropomorphized into baddies. Gotta love adolescence for bringing out the best stories! -Hop "Kal-el" Michael |
| |
I definitely like what they're doing with Smallville. I hope it stays good, and keeps moving forward. I'm really interested in seeing what they do with the characters, which is the whole strength of the show. As for Roswell, I heard that it was still running on cable somewhere, which is apparently true. This Roswell Site I found has current episode and character info, but after a quick glance I still couldn't figure out which station it's on. Unfortunately, I don't have cable anyway, so I doesn't really matter, at least for me. If I'm not mistaken, though, Colin Hanks' character was killed about half-way through the second season. |

Check UPN on Tuesday nights at 9:00 pm ... |

Hey Mel, Do you know of any cool places to shop, (cheaply) in SF? Cool clothes, pants, etc... I'm heading up there spring break with a girlfriend and we wanted to go shopping. And since I like your style of clothing, I thought you might know a few places. Let me know, thanx! |
| |
well, i've only gone shopping a few times in san fran...but i've been really lucky each time. i hit a great sale at the gap and got two pairs of jeans for $15 each...i shopped at ross and got my fun pair of blue pants (that look like a skirt) for only $10...but my last pair that i just got at the vintage expo were more expensive than i usually spend for pants. but, hey, it was a vintage expo and the pants are totally cool and so worth it! the great thing about san fran is that it has some of the same stores as san diego - they are just 3x as large with way more to choose from. and, san fran has tons of shops we don't have. i would suggest going to ross for sure, because they have two floors to shop from and they are as cheap as you'll probably get. then, i would suggest hitting haight and ashbury. that is where you'll find a bunch of thrift shops and other cool 'in style' shops. there is this one store (i don't remember the name) that has a large box over the door...you'll know what i'm talking about when you see it...and they have some good stuff to look at. my friend claudine is an awesome shopper, and she gave val and i a few names of stores to check out but i don't remember them anymore. maybe i'll send her an email and ask her to cc.. you with the names of the shops. other than that, i don't know much about other places. i've always had people bringing me around. sorry, i wish i could do better for ya but i think my clothing findings have all been pure luck. |
| |
Who is this traveler Cari? I thought I was the only person in the world with that name? I bet she doesn't spell it like I do... probably Carrie or someting like that. I would like to meet her. Anyone know if she is going to be here during the rest of the week? Maybe at the Firehouse or Champion? |
| |
She's probably going to the Firehouse tonight, but I won't be there tonight. I know her name starts with a "C", but I don't know if its Cari or Carrie. Its probably the latter, now that I think about it. But even if it is the same, don't worry, you are one-of-a-kind anyway, Cari! |
| |
Incidentally, I'll probably retire "You Gotta Keep It Separated" by Dick Cheese for a while now that I've played it a few times. It did get a few more incredulous inquiries from Susan and Dean-- "Who IS that!? Isn't that an offspring song!?" PS, a good way to get me to play music that you like that I don't have is to loan me the CD! its worked for Gene and Bill S. and a couple other people, too. I'll make a compilation with a song or two off the CD and then return the CD... |
| |
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to go get my tired changed. So I guess I have to miss everyone tonight. I hope everyone is doing well. Dance with someone new for me, and some one old, and a borrowed one, and someone wearing blue. Thanks a bunch. So sad I haven't been dancing all week. Cari |
| |
Although new to the scene, I know about the "withdrawals", Cari - but mine will disappear after tomorrow - payday! : )- Peggy |
| |
Withdrawls, that's what it is. I am going insane. My toes are twinkling, but they have no sky to shine in. |
| |
And to think, I was going to ask a lead that I have known for awhile but have never danced with to dance tonight. Darn, oh, well. |
| |
I went to school with a Cari in 9th grade and then again years later at UCSC. And yes, she spelled her name that very same way. Her twin sister was Kelli. |
| |
Wow. Not many people spell it Cari. Pretty cool. |
| |
mel, have you seen your pics on the lindy in the park website? http://www.lindyinthepark.com/images/20020310/20020310.htm #18 is a niiice one Miss ya, Maya ps, nice lindy groove shirt! |
| |
oh my...i look like a psycho! i can't decide if i like it, or if i hate it. it's such a hard decision. hehehe thanks, maya. miss you too, girl! have a great time in san fran!!! say hi to everyone for me. |
| |
Mel, it's from all the G forces in your multiple turns! |
| |
Anybody know who's dj'ing tonight? |
| |
Dunno, but I'm planning on going. Had an insanely fantastic time at GSWLF and am all fired up again. |
| |
woohoo! houston was great! not only were there awesome people attending the camp, but then we also had some of the instructors (kevin st laurent/carla heiney and sylvia sykes/jason christodoulu...to mention a few) on the dance floor in the evenings. i had some of the most amazing dances with kevin and jason, and tons of wonderful dances with boys from around the US. and, of course, i had amazing dances with chance! but, my body is still aching from the two dips & tricks classes chance and i took with kevin and carla. i can barely walk...i wonder if i can dance. |
| |
Kevin and Carla were fantastic. We HAVE to bring them to SD sometime. Great teachers and fun to be around. |
| |
I am so blinking jealous. |
| |
you should be ;) |
| |
Carla was here a year ago. Was it with Kevin? I was gone that weekend and missed them. I'd love to have her back. |
| |
no, carla was here with marty last year. i don't think we've ever had kevin here to teach, but it would definitely be worth it. and, i think that kevin and carla have a wonderful teaching relationship. they balance each other very well in the classroom and on the dance floor. plus, their style is a good mix between hollywood and savoy. |
| |
YES! YES! YES! |
| |
Anyone going to the rocket tonight? |
| |
I am. Denise from Oregon/LA is going with her friend Michael. They're in town already for the exhange, so I'm going down around 9pm, and then head over to Henry's later. |
| |
Ok. I'll see you guys there. |
| |
Who's going to the Rocket (ATS) tonight? Anyone? |
| |
Can't make the Rocket, but Tara, Shayna, and others will be at Henry's. |
| |
I'll go to Henry's afterwards so I'll see you guys there. |
