Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I'm dying to know how the women’s' DJ night went at Clayton's last week. Did the girls put the boy DJ’s to shame? Any especially good songs debuted? |
| |
For those that are interested: Meeshi and Emily will be DJing at Claytons/Cafe Savoy tonight, Friday the 5th. Emily has a substantial swing CD collection and plays some good stuff! I'll be DJing at Claytons next Friday, the 12th. By then, I'll have lots of new stuff thats coming in the mail. |
| |
Just SOME good stuff? Does that mean most of it is crap? |
| |
PS. I'm just playing with you, I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything. I'll leave that for the other thread. HA HA HA |
| |
I hope people show up for Clayton's on Friday considering the Calloway Big Band will be in town. Don't take it personal Ron. |
| |
D'oh! |
| |
Folks will have to sit during the show, so perhaps they will express all that pent up dance energy at Claytons? |
| |
what, you mean they wont be sitting during ronnies djing? |
| |
Ok, don't you think Ron gets beat on enough? On Jan. 19, next Friday I want to invite everyone that can make it to Cafe Savoy! I'll be DJing, but what is more important is that it is Shana's Birthday!! Also, from what I remember there are a few other birthdays that day and days around it too. Tons of birthday dances that night!!! So, I hope everyone shows up to celebrate, not only Shana's B-day, but all the others!!! Since it is some what of a Birthday party, I will promise to play nothing but fun and energetic songs all night!!! I mean, hey it's a party! I do believe Dennis might be DJing with me, no confirmation yet. |
| |
Shana and I will be conducting the class this Friday evening at Claytons! We will be going over lindy basics, and throwing in some variations on moves. So come on down and celebrate a few birthdays tonight, including Shana's!!! |
| |
Are you djing as well? |
| |
Hey, I had a lot of fun on Fri. Thanks, Chris and Dennis. Okay, there were several weird songs in there and I didn't want to dance to everything but overall I enjoyed the music. I forgot to say happy birthday to Shana and Mike. Happy Birthday! Happy Belated Birthday to you too, Ron! I think Gene enjoyed his b-day dinner at Kenny B's before Clayton's and Tomcat Courtney sounded pretty darned good to me. |
| |
Anyone else? Thanks Laurel for your honesty, do you recall what songs that were weird? That could help us not play them in the future. I would love some feed back on last Fridays Cafe Savoy with Dennis and me DJing. We played a mix of tunes, not really favoring any one style, at least that's what we were trying to do. ( ok, I'm speaking for Dennis, I'll proabably have to remove my foot from my mouth). We, at least I, wanted to give a night of great energy in the music, and diverse styles of swinging jazz. Again, any feed back would be great! Thanks |
| |
I had fun! It's seems that the LA style DJ's are playing more to the crowd present, rather than trying to "give a swing music lesson to the poor unfortunate uneducated lame dancers present". Sorry, but that's how I used to feel as I stood motionless trying to figure out what I was listening to. San Diego has a a mix of "Modern Savoy" and "LA style" dancers. I'm happy to see that no one DJ seems to be using "Songs as a Weapon" any longer. At a DANCE I like hearing songs that are played for their danceability rather than their historical value. A good swing DJ, in my opinion, knows which songs possess both, and knows what to play WHEN, and WHERE, and TO WHOM, when they don't. I do agree with Laurel that some songs are "weird", meaning to me that there just wasn't anything about them that inspired me to move my feet to them, with weak bass lines and mushy rhythm sections. Clayton's is a very difficult room sometimes to hear in because of the sound system and where the speakers are located. Unless the music has a well defined bass line/rhythm section it gets lost in the ceiling of that room |
| |
So true about the sound in Clayton's. Anyone else, with comments? I'm glad to hear that the majority of the music was real danceable, at least that means we're doing something right. |
| |
Oh, and did anyone notice that Twirly made her debut with a brand-new healed up Achilles tendon? Nice dancing, Twirly! -HopM |
| |
Chris, since you're looking for honest feedback, I'd have to say I much preferred Dennis' DJing to yours. His song choices, at least during the time I was there, were, on average, more diverse, audibly clearer, and more danceable. I did leave early, though, so I didn't have a large sample to go on. And I'm sorry I don't have anything more specific. I left right when you played a song that entirely cleared the floor and kept it mostly clear. |
| |
Yep Ron, that song just didn't sound right, first time playing it there. Obviously, I won't play that one again. I guess you missed my first set, man was the floor packed, played tons of different stuff - too bad you missed out, maybe text time. |
| |
Yeah, I play clunkers occasionally too. I try it out, it bombs, I take it off my playlist... |
| |
Oh, Jeff explained that much better than I did! I couldn't tell you which songs they were, Chris. I don't even know the names of all the classics. I'm so pathetic! There were even enough blues tunes to keep me happy that night. I get the impression that you don't really favor the blues, Chris, so maybe Dennis played them? I wasn't really paying attention to who was playing what. |
| |
Laurel, I think both Dennis and I played several blues songs. One's I played that I can remember off the top of my head were: Woody Herman - Black Night Gown, Count Basie - Every day I have the Blues, George Gee - Blues for Stephanie, Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong - ? blues (now that's killing me, I can't remember the name), Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehaven, and several others. Dennis also chimed in with several blues numbers, not sure what. |
| |
OK, here's the scoop-- It's looks like Tony and Aletha will be co-DJing this Friday at Clayton's. It'll be good to hear some fresh new tunes. Plus, I may sneak in a set or two, we'll see. Shawn, believe it or not, I'll have to side with Reuben on the whole "catering" issue. I think it's great that Paul and Sharon are coming to Clayton's to check out our scene, but gearing the musical selection to cater his undeniably slow, groovy tastes will give them a warped perspective of what Lindy dancing is really like in San Diego. I know I've said this before, but what makes our scene so great is that we are NOT dominated by one dance style, nor overwhelmingly play one genre of swing music over another. We take, adapt and incorporate different elements of many swing styles, both old and new, and mix it into our dancing. That's what makes SD dancers so unique and special! Now Paul's a great and influential dancer, but he is not God and we should not defer to him as one. (Steven Mitchell, now that's a different story!) We should proudly show Paul and Sharon the full diversity of Lindy dancing in San Diego and let them see how we love to rip it up and go crazy as much as we love to get down and groove. From a recent fast-dancing convert (thanks to Kate), Meeshi |
| |
Right on Meeshi!!! |
| |
I'm sorry but when it comes to GOd's, Steven is not the first to come to mind... Ryan Francois, now there's a Lindy God. |
| |
who are you and what have YOU done with Ian? ian finally says something intelligent, and the real ian isn't around to see it. |
| |
Wow, what a week! DJ's crossing the musical divide. Now, Meeshi endorsing uptempos! And irony of ironies, a chance to show P&S how San Diego swings, and we have two out-of-towners (albeit honorary San Diegans) DJing (!). Amused and somewhat bemused, -HopM |
| |
As long as you're not bedazzled I think you'll be okay. |
| |
"...what makes our scene so great is that we are NOT dominated by one dance style, nor overwhelmingly play one genre of swing music over another. We take, adapt and incorporate different elements of many swing styles, both old and new, and mix it into our dancing. That's what makes SD dancers so unique and special!" Well put, Meeshi! Perhaps we could emboss that and give it it's own frame on the forum. What do you think, Shawn? As someone who is still reeling from the extraordinary experience created by the Lindy Hop community here in SD, I second the sentiment! |
| |
Andy: I've always felt Ryan to be a lindy God. Why do you think I take such offense to what people refer to today as Savoy style? Other than the True Dean Collins emulators, he's the only one that comes close. |
| |
i know, ian. i was just quipping about you finally saying something intellegent ~8^) |

TODAY IS MICHELLE'S BIRTHDAY!! Come to Clayton's and celebrate. Ron will be djing. For those interested, several of us are meeting at the Spaghetti Factory at 6:45 for dinner before Clayton's. Come join us if you can!!! Call me before 6pm so we can put your name down and know how many extra may be coming. If you've already emailed Luis and are on the list you don't need to call me. Thanks, Jeff Eldridge 619.339.7117 cell |

Whether or not anyone will actually read this I have no idea, but my question pertains to Claytons so I thought I would put it here. Is there anyone who is going to Clayton's tonight who lives between Encinitas and the Downtown area who would be willing to carpool? Being a girl, it's not too fun wandering around Downtown by yourself at night, especially when parking is limited or far away. I live in Encinitas so I would be willing to drive to anyone's house and either pick them up or they can drive me from their home. Please e-mail me if you would be willing to do this: emeraldcat@home.com Thanks a bunch....Maya Seaman |
| |
Isn't Cafe Savoy cancelled tonight? I believe there is a Tango function there. |
| |
I thought that the Tango function was next Friday, March 30th... |
| |
Oops. You are right! |
| |
Right!!! Clayton's is happening tonight!! NEXT WEEK is the tango thing that's bumping us out of Clayton's on Friday night (March 30th). HOWEVER, the next day is the official LINDY BY THE BAY on Saturday, March 31st, at 3pm at the Mission Bay Hilton Boardwalk So not only is Clayton's happening TONIGHT, but TOMORROW (March 24th) is the "trail run" of LINDY BY THE BAY at the Mission Bay Hilton Boardwalk. You are all welcome to come check it out and tell us what you think of the "site" and sound. Jeff |
| |
Maya, I understand, but maybe next time or whenever I don't have a conflict in my schedule. I have a normal 45 min.-1 hr. commute to SD from San Marcos, so carpooling w/ someone from N. County Coastal has been a consideration. I can drive you to your car tonight if we leave @ the same time, let me know. |
| |
Maya- E-mail me and I'll share a secret parking spot that is close by, cheap, has constant attendants in case of an emergencies, and the walk from it to Clayton's is well lit. I always park there now. Amy |

Just a few FYIs to keep y'all up-to-date: 1) I'll be DJing tonight at the Firehouse. I know Carla and Marty may be stopping by, so Gabe and Rob (if you're reading this) perhaps you can bring some good "shag-able" tunes for me to play. My collection is limited. 2) Little David from Orange is coming all the way down to SD tomorrow night to grace us with his musical magnificence. He will be DJ-du-jour at Cafe Savoy, so please come down and support our visiting DJ. He will be driving 2 hours each way just to hang out and play music for us. Truly a labor of love! 3) I'll be making some major revisions to Full Moon Swango that may please some of you swing diehards out there. After hearing your various concerns and complaints regarding the musical format of the evening (not enough swing, too much tango, not enough salsa or tango, etc.), I've made an executive decision and decided to open both dance rooms for DJed dancing. Swing/Salsa--Main Ballroom Tango/Blues--Practice Room In observing the dance dynamics at the last Swango event, it has become apparent to me that the heavier, introspective mood of tango music does not mix well with the lighter, energetic feel of most swing and salsa music. I know it's taken me awhile to realize what seems obvious to many of you -- Lindy and tango music don't really mix all that well. However, I must say that tango and blues music and dancing ARE very compatible and interchangeable. In practical terms, what this means is that there'll be more of whatever kind of music you prefer most -- 3/4 swing, 1/4 salsa in the main ballroom, 3/4 tango, 1/4 blues in the practice room. Let's try this format for this month's event (Sat. Apr. 21st) and see how things pan out. Peace, Meeshi |
| |
Carla and Marty like to Lindy Hop to ya know. And Carla has fucked me up on a couple of sloooow numbers as well. |
| |
that comment just gave me a mental picture i didn't want to see. |
| |
To shave or to wax? That is the question! (Oops, wrong thread... see "Dancing Outdoors" up a few) |
| |
i know this is way off topic, but.. what is up with Yehoodi?? |
| |
Its broken. |

According to Frankyboy, It's been hacked!!! -Hop "I wonder if that's why Swingorama is having so many posts this week" Michael |

ALTERNAIVE TO CLAYTONS TONIGHT The Casbah Russel Scott Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys. |
| |
awww yeah |
| |
Indeed "NAIVE" to think so!!! In an "ALTERed" state I guess. Sorry, couldn't resist. I know you meant "ALTERNATIVE". I personally, though, would rather go to the dentist than the Casbah. (Unless I was going just to lounge and listen to an artist that 200 people weren't cramming inside to see!) The last time I went it was so crowded I left in 10 minutes. Chris, I'll bring your Jacket with me to Clayton's tonight. If you go to Casbah instead I'll also have it with me at the Carla and Marty workshop. |
| |
Another magical night at Clayton's. What's funny is how it gets started so slowly. The lesson ends at about 9:30 or so, and in the next 10 minutes the place just starts to fill up. By 10:00 it's packed and a rockin'!! Anne and Sophia came down all the way from LA just to be with us tonight! L'il David was spinnin' em like crazy. Dan from D.C./New York was there. Of course, Marty and Carla mesmerized everyone with their Balboa exhibition. Carla and Marty danced I believe almost every song with everyone there. So gracious and friendly. I had so many great dances tonight. Thanks to Carla, her friend from L.A. who's name escapes me, Magda (San Diego's newest addition from Chicago who's an unbelievably great dancer who will only be here 18 months so dance with her while you can guys), Melissa, Kate, Valerie, Isgard, Maya, Theresa, Sophie and Anne from L.A., Flo, Allie, Christi and the other Christi and so many more!!! Everyone's getting so good so fast!! IT'S SOOO COOOOOL!!!! If Michelle Cancel would have been there I would have said, "Lord, take me now! It'll never be this good again!!!" And the guys were smokin'!!!! Of course Marty (of Carla and Marty fame), Meeshi (in his new/used suit that looked like a million bucks!), Jim, Billy, Tan, Chance, Brian, Danny, 'Lil David, Jack (from LA), Dan (from New York/D.C.), "Dan Collins", Steve (from AZ), Tim ("who's falling down a whole lot less and lookin' pretty d. good"), and a bunch others that I can't remember cuz it's 3:10 a.m. and I'm loosin' it)....everyone is lookin' so good and dancing to the MUSIC!!!! Must go to bed before head falls into key pad....Have to rise at 7:00 a.m. to get sound going for the workshop, which will be to die for!!! Wait to you see Carla and Marty if you haven't yet. It just doesn't get any better. Peace and Love, Jeff |
| |
The Casbah show was fantastic!! Big Sandy is my new favorite band. Hands down. Excellent. |
| |
Yes, I have to agree with Krista here...The Casbah rocked Friday night! It's too bad there aren't more people here in San Diego that appreciate live music. |
| |
Damn, Jeff. Are you saying that you're getting too old for The Casbah? That place is still the crown jewel for great live music in all of San Diego. The only place I know of that had a one full page write up in Rolling Stone some years back. C'mon man! What's wrong with getting "down and gritty" in a dive like that from time to time? However, I had others plans to go to Clayton's and you were right about the special vibe that was happening there. Amazing night and it was my first time dancing here since coming back from Toronto. Carla was amazing to watch and I've never seen Tan dance SO good! Ann and Sophie from LA were a lot of fun to dance with. Wish they can come down more often. Yeah, we had a choice that night. Your decision was "academic"; mine would've been a toss up. Glad I made the right decision to come to Clayton's. |
| |
The "problem" for me with the Casbah is that I do love great live music. And when I've gone there before, it's just been too crowed for me. Great bands attract big crowds. So, when I want to dance, I'd rather dance to a DJ than be in a "standing room only" room, unable to do so, especially when the likes of Carla and Marty are in town. |
| |
The dance floor at the casbah was perfect Friday night. No one entered it unless they were dancing, and I never had a dance that was comprimised by lack of space. Great show. Great night. |
| |
Yeah, the Casbah can be cool for dancing if there's another venue or two going on that keeps most of the dancers away. The reason you had room to dance is that even Clayton's was a bit "over crowded". So it actually all worked out! I mean, don't get me wrong, whenever you're not there Krista, (and Chris and Shana, Lisa, Julia and Tertia too), you're missed. But there's no way the Casbah or Clayton's could have supported things alone. It acually worked out that they were able to "divide" the demand. |
| |
I just realized that the Dallas Exchange was this past weekend. I'm not sure how many people went, but it looks like our scene is getting strong enough to support two venues, even with a popular exchange out of town. (At least on a Friday during Spring Break). I personally don't like it when we do get split up. I love it when we're all together. |
| |
It's not like most dancers down here would have gone and supported that show at the Casbah, even if nothing else was going on. |
| |
I would have gone if nothing else was happening, and from what I'm hearing, loved it! I've never heard of them before. Do any of the DJ's in San Diego or elsewhere play off any of their CD's? Your comment above, Krista, about "most dancers down here", and especially Tertia's comment, "It's too bad there aren't more people here in San Diego that appreciate live music" REALLY surprise me. I think they're both a bit "global" and a little inaccurate. We've supported live music at Neiman's and the Rocket when we were familiar with who was playing. I think what IS true is that not many dancers in San Diego know who "Big Sandy" even is. If they're a great band, we should try to get them to come to a place like Neiman's or the Rocket where there's room enough to all fit inside and dance to them if we all DO show up and support it. I've been to the Casbah about 10 different times or so. The last 3 or 4 times when I did go it was so crowed I couldn't get to the bar or the dance floor. I know it's a great club with alot of atmosphere and history. It's just small, that's all. I love good live music. |
| |
it sounds to me like we all had fun where we were. what exaclty is this argument about? |
| |
"We've supported live music at Neiman's and the Rocket when we were familiar with who was playing." That is a problem here and has been for years. There seem to not be a whole lot of people who take chances on bands they don't know. If they haven't heard of them, forget getting a crowd. I remember a couple years ago Swingerhead started a tour (from Florida) at Tio Leos. There weren't many people there. By the end of the evening it was only Regina and I and we had a blast. I hadn't seen the band before. I heard they were coming to town and looked them up on the net and went out to support them.( Live music and something new too boot.) Now Michael Andrews (the ringleader) is out in Cali all the time at Merv's place in LA and Swingerhead is strong in Florida and elsewhere. I'm surprised people haven't heard of Big Sandy. The band has been playing in San Diego for years, besides many times at the Casbah, like at Street Scene and I think they played the SuperBowl thing downtown too. Take a chance on an unknown. Or you'll never know what you are missing. |
| |
Hey, Mel, not exactly and "argument"...just conversing a bit, don't ya think? Angel, good points. I don't mind be adventurous when it comes to checking out a band I'm unfamiliar with. It's one of the fun things about exchanges. New and different bands! It's hard for me to consider giving up something like Clayton's, especially when great out of town instructors are mixing it up with us all, for a band with whom I'm unfamiliar. Mel, as she often does, said it best. "It sounds like everyone had fun where they were at". I'd still like to know if any DJ's in LA or SD are playing any Big Sandy stuff. That would help us get to know them a bit. We need a little educating here! |
| |
Well, personally, I don't play Rock and Roll nor do I support Live Rock and Roll. |
| |
Reuben, are you saying "Big Sandy" is a rock and roll band? Seriously, man, do you like 'em and do ya play em? What kind of music do they play? Swing, Neo Swing, Neo Acid Punk Rock Metal Swing? What???? I needs a lil' edyamakaytn' here! I respect your opinion...although now that I know you used to be a "grave digger" ya kinda scare me!!! You AND Aletha!!! Ewwwww.... |
| |
I think people should go out more regardless if they are familiar with the bands or not. That's how you begin to broaden your knowledge of live acts out there. There's no need to be personally offended by the statement, Jeff. In general, and it was a general post, San Diego Lindy Hoppers don't support much live music. That's just the way it is. I'm not saying I go out to every live band possible, and I know you've been out when live acts have come through town. The post was just an observation. If you go out, and know you support live acts, then obviously the post doesn't apply to you and everyone can go on with their lives. I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm glad everyone had fun in all their respective places on Friday night. I wouldn't have wanted any other dancers there Friday night anyway cause then I wouldn't have had space to dance... ;) I wouldn't consider Big Sandy straight rock & roll, Reuben. I wouldn't expect you to play them either, but I would consider them more western swing. Just an awesome band regardless of genre. Excellent musicians. Slide guitar, steel guitar, rhythm guitar, stand up bass, and drums, with a guest appearance by a trombone player. It was badass. A fun time was had by all. Peace out people~ Krista |
| |
I think that was the band I saw a while back at the Casbah, I remember dancing with Tertia, others... I've played a song or two off the Big Sandy Introducing the Fly Right boys, after I heard Chris play that same album. But not often. |
| |
Jeff, Like Krista said they are a "Western Swing" band... which actually places them closer to the Rock and Roll genre then the Jazz genre. They just aren't really my thang. |
| |
Thanks, Reuben...Going down "Memory Lane" here for a minute: I remember when Vasa Hall used to be open on Tuesdays and Fridays, remember? And every Friday there was a live band. It got too expensive for Alan, (the owner who eventually sold it to Mickey, etc.) to keep that up. Bands started coming in once a month, some not so good. That's also when bars were still capitalizing on the "swing" craze and having live bands play often. Harmony on Fifth, Papa Jack's, The Marriott, and The Catamaran. They all came to the realization in about a year's time that dancers don't drink all the much, except water, when they're dancing. They went out of business or went to Hip Hop, Rock or Salsa, etc. So now today, we've got dancer sponsored events with DJ's primarily to keep the cost down. The great bands are not cheap! We've gotten used to the DJ |
