DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mix Master Meeshi were scratching like crazy tonight! |
| |
Fun night!....Home now...Can't sleep...Boy wants to dance some more.... |
| |
Great music night, it felt different from every night I've heard in months. Everyone seemed to be talking about the DJing last night (and mostly in a good way). Loved the variety, and the final mix was fun... even if it broke me about eight different ways. Commendable job guys. Admittedly I spent a lot of my time at the Firehouse last night asleep on the pillows but that had everything to do with an immediately previous function, alcohol, and lack of sleep... and _nothing_ to do with the music. Some nights you just have to go out dancing even if you know you won't get much actual dancing in. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
Last night was fun, huh? There was a lot of energy "in da house", thanks to the huge UCSD contingent. I just want to say thanks to everyone for clapping so loudly for the DJs at the end of the night. As the other DJs will confirm, DJing is often a thankless job where dancers express their complaints more than they express their gratitude. At the end of a long night of teaching and playing music, your appreciate applause really made me feel that it's all worthwhile. Thank you! One more thing, since I've been so busy with school this week, I wasn't able to find someone to DJ for Cafe Savoy until last night. So we're going to have a RAG TAG team of DJs tonight: Tim, Lee (and Andrew), Ron and me It should be fun. I hope that clapping for the DJs will become a trend and extend through tonight as well. Peace! |
| |
Oh, great, Meeshi. A better sound system plus a fun line-up of dj's. Now I HAVE to go out tonight and I'll be really tired at work again tomorrow. It'll all be your fault! P.S. Lee, if you're reading this, do NOT play that song we talked about last night. I was joking! |
| |
Laurel, you just clinched it now... |
| |
Meeshi and Jeff, I'd just like to reiterate some of the comments already said. I loved the jazzy rhythms last night and had more fun dancing than I've had in a long time. I danced virtually every song from the time I arrived to the end of the evening and went home exhausted but in a groovy mood. Thanks you! Sean |
| |
Nothing like beating a dead horse, but maybe that doesn't apply to compliments. I got to the Firehouse very late (11:30) just planning to dance for half an hour as a study break. I can't remember the last time I had more fun! I wish I could have gotten there earlier. I kept saying to myself, "Can't stay long! Must go home and study!" and then something fun would be played and I just couldn't tear myself away. I especially loved the crazy end mix. Thanks for a fantastic night! Vikki |
| |
Good crowd at the Firehouse last night. But boy, it was hot! And its still March! With the fan in the back removed and the door blocked off (both for sound-proofing), its going to get ugly in there when it gets hot outside. |
| |
Lots of visitors and spring-breakers there last night, too, but most were follows and the leads weren't keeping them busy enough... |
| |
The summer heat comments kept coming up last night. Everyone seems to be thinking about how it's going to move from "sauna" to "oven" once May gets here... Any idea if we can do something about the noise or complaints? I don't have any good ones yet, but here seems like a good place to poll for ideas. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
Vent fan donation night. |
| |
I thought the front door was being kept closed because Sharon and Mel were cold collecting the money by the front door. Was it because of the neighbors complaining about the noise? |
| |
the center requires that we keep the front door closed due to noise ordinaces and neighbor complaints. i would be more than happy to wear an extra layer of clothing and keep the door open for fresh air, but unfortunately i have been specifically asked to keep the door closed. although, the guy in charge (i forget his name) wants to know any suggestions as to how he can help make the firehouse more exciting for us, so i'm sure he would accept any ideas toward cooling the place. maybe we could get more fans, or we could offer to keep the door open until 10:30 and then close it after that. any better ideas? |
| |
Add central air conditioning... |
| |
You remember how hot it was last summer, even when we had the door open, and the little ceiling vent fan was on? I don't mean to sound alarmist, but this summer in the Firehouse WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. Of heat-stroke. Especially those of you popping Ecstacy, as you are prone to heat-stroke already. And remember what Meeshi announced last week, those shelf-like things on the wall, they are not for putting water bottles on, they are "art". |
| |
I guess the heat will just promote wearing less clothing while dancing. That could be good or it could be bad.... |
| |
Lord help us if it comes with blues dancing... |
| |
central air would be wonderful, if you'd like to pay for it. hehehe but, since we know that is not an option, we should try and figure out a logical solution instead of just complaining about it. i vote for installing a sprinkler system in the middle of the floor and we can all wear our bathing suits while we dance. this way we will stay cool, smell better, and won't have to shower when we get home. vote for mel, she's swell :P |
| |
Seriously, a sprinkler system in the middle of the floor doesn't seem to be that 'logical' a situation becuase of the slippery floor, but along those lines, since we'll be wearing bathing suits, blues music should definately be outlawed unless the goal is to expand the lindy scene by multiplying like rabbits. Not having to shower later would be great. |
| |
I also think they might have a problem with the giant pool of water covering their hardwood floor. ... but I can't say I'd mind seeing some of the follows in bathing suits... ^_- We could just go down to 7-11 and buy out all the ice. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
You could move the Firehouse to a better ventilated venue for the summer. Has anyone checked out the Methodist Church social hall on 35th and Adams? Nice hardwood floor. Bathrooms. Kitchen. Easy access. Don't know what the restrictions might be, but it's worth looking into. |
| |
I don't know all the reasons Meeshi went for the Firehouse, but it has one great advantage: there's no equipment setup time required. The sound system is always there, ready and waiting. At both The Rocket and Claytons, all equipment (speakers, CD player, etc.) has to be setup and then tore down. People who do this every week are the unsung heroes of the swing scene. (Jeff, Jim&Margaret, Meeshi, others...) |
| |
JUST SWEAT!!! Dance sweat is different than regular sweat anyway. It's sweet and slightly salty. My only complaint is that it foggs up my glasses!!! But it seems to be limited to when I come in the front door from going to 7/11 for Perrier. SURVIVOR LINDY HOP!!!! YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!!! |
| |
We could all bring extra fans or something. I'm sure everyone must have a portable fan lying around their house somewhere. Though I do really like that sprinkler idea....Oh and by the way, Ryan, keep your girly swing fantasies to yourself...you are not Brock. |
| |
wouldn't half the fun of a sprinkler system in the middle of the floor be getting wet with normal clothes on. Without going into too much detail, there is something to be said for clothing hanging loosely but ever so snug as wet clothes do. This can go for guys as well as girls. Opps i have said too much |
| |
Oh Tony! I'm sooooo disappointed! Where's the little guy with big pointy ears? |
| |
Tony, you're not coming to Mission Bay on Saturday right? Suddenly I feel a bit worried about dancing with you near water. |
| |
FYI, I didn't choose the Firehouse for its great potential as a dance hall location. I just wanted a location where I could hold my swing classes, as well as have an informal dance for students afterwards. I had no idea it would become so popular...and so HOT! Besides Ron is right, the sound system is just so easy to work with there and so convenient with its ZERO set-up time. So let's keep brainstorming! p.s. Both restrooms do have showers. |
| |
Trust me, when i am around, there is no need to worry (especially around water;) |
| |
I have NO idea what that is supposed to mean. I guess they just don't teach you much about witty banter in med school. |
| |
Ever since Meeshi opened up The Firehouse to general dancing, I've grown accustom to it's "sweaty ambiance" and its slightly slanted floor. I'm probably one of a few who don't mind the place at all, since the place has character(talk about character, remember Vasa Hall?). Since we're on this subject of finding fantasy ways to cooling off The Firehouse, why not blow the roof off and have dancing under the stars? Build the walls up a little higher and beef them up so the music won't bother the neighbors much. Who needs more fans when you can just use the two that's there to circulate the air on the floor(electricity is expansive enough already). On nights when it's raining, "dancing in the rain night." Bathing suits optional and with the slanted floor, the dance floor will never flood. Imagine under those circumstances, legends would be born. For instance: Tony would be known as "Dangerous When Wet" not just to Maya, but to every Lindy hopper in town. I would be known as "Big Slimy Bastard" and on and on...Imagine the possibilities, just by blowing the roof off the place? I'm a whacked romantic and by the way, that's my two cents. |
| |
Should I not show up to the Firehouse anymore????? Y'all complaining about how HOT it gets in there......maybe I can tone it down a bit in the summer....BUT I'm not making any promises!!!! |
| |
^_- |
| |
Gene, you are a creative master mind! And I don't think many people dislike the Firehouse in any way. I think the place is great...we just like complaining about trivial stuff and cooking up inventive ways to remedy the so called problem. Personally I don't mind sweating at the Firehouse, or any other venue for that matter, because these are the only places where I don't have to worry about persperation or pit stains looking terribly unattractive. Besides, working up a good healthy sweat shows you've been dancing a lot, which is never a bad thing. |
| |
And just out of curiosity, who is in favor of Gene permanently changing his user name to "Big Slimy Bastard?" It has a certain ring to it... |
| |
I don't think Gene's mommy would like that. |
| |
Okay, "Big Slimy Bad Boy" then!!! Gene's Mommy would probably agree to that! |
| |
I developed a real disdain for dancing in hot, sweaty, humid environments my year at Herrangue. You know Gene isn't the only sweaty one out there. There are many a follow who "glow" quite brightly |
| |
Ian, dude, when you walk into any dancehall, you(AND Benno) are the most dapper dressed dudes in the SD swing scene(and I mean that!). You come in and dance 80% of the time, then you leave as dapper as you were coming in! No wrinkles anywhere on yourself and nothing else seems out of place(except for little beeds of sweat on his forehead...sometimes)!! What gives?! Do you even sweat? Man, I know for a fact that if I'm ever dancing with threads you wear I'd be up to my ears in dry cleaning bills! Dang, I sweat like an out of control spinklerhead! Changing my user name to a moniker (I gave myself) that has a certain ring to it? Hmmmmm? That's OK Maya, I'll stick to my real name. However, when I ask you to dance, YOU can call me anything you want. |
| |
Ian is no stranger to the sweat. I've never danced with someone who's hands sweat so much... SOOO GROSS!! |
| |
So THAT's where he sweats? Amazing how he manages to keep his hands off his clothes. Don't tell me you treat your fancy duds with Scotchguard? |
| |
yeah...it's really gross. Love ya, Ian! ;P |
| |
Gene: Thanks for the compliment. But I need to correct you. I probably only dance 25% of the time, I just give the appearance of dancing alot. And I get awfuly hot, and have been known to have that drenched look on many occasion, granted usually the Tio Leos and Casbah shows, Where I dance a lot more. Krista: Are my hands really worset than anyone else's? |
| |
I'm not trying to make you feel bad, Ian. |
| |
It's happening. San Diego is becoming a very cool place to swing. I felt it when I walked into the room at the Rocket on Tuesday. I couldn't believe I was walking into a swing venue in San Diego. It had the energy and electricity of Memories on a good night. It was the weirdest feeling. I felt a little of that again at the Firehouse tonight! Dancers here are getting good fast! (Now we just have learn how to dance fast "good"!) Marty and Carla being in the room dancing almost every song didn't hurt! Wow, Carla is the kind of dancer that when she's on the floor you're compelled to watch her. She has this amazing presence about her dancing. So cute, yet precise and punchy! I'm almost afraid to go to Clayton's tomorrow. What if it keeps building?! See what happens when ya dance by the Bay? (shameless plug) Jeff "Loving San Diego right about now" Eldridge |
| |
I must agree, Jeff. I've had more fun dancing this week (Lindy-by-the-Bay, Rocket, Firehouse) than I've had out in a long time. Thanks, Gabe and Jeff, for giving me a break and letting me enjoy some of last night's wonderful energy. With all these out-of-town visitors and old-time regulars coming out of Lindy hibernation, it really felt like we were in the midst of our own mini-Lindy exchange. Fun, fun, fun! Maybe it has something to do with Lindy-by-the-Bay or the coming of spring, but I definitely feel like our swing scene is about to experience a re-blossoming and resurgence very, very soon. Let's not take what we have for granted...San Diego rocks! |
| |
Great nite at the firehouse last nite! Place was packed. Lots of energy in the place (see what happens when you play lots of swing music). So many out-of-towners, some even drove down from OC. I heard some visitors mention that they were jealous of our dance scene. Yeah, Marty and Carla from DC are very good dancers. I hope lots of people can make their workshop on Saturday and keep dancing at the live band later that nite. San Diego rocks! |
| |
I must say I have noticed a change in the scene since I have returned from my disappearance to the land of no swing. Everyone seems friendlier to me, almost like they are loving life and dance more than they used to. (Which I know may sound weird.) All I know is I spent a decent amount of time in the Techno Culture the last year and the feeling created by 4000 people (which is a small amount if you know anything about Raves) dancing to the same song in the name of "Peace Love Unity and Respect" is an awesome experience. They are all there for the common reason that they LOVE feeling the happiness and freedom dancing and music can create. To me, the last few nights (and yes Jeff, LBTBs) I have felt that good vibe in our little swing scene, and on average we only have like a hundred or so people. Probably less. Which to me is an amazing thing. That so few people can create such good feelings is rare and Meeshi is right, we shouldn't take it for granted. Ok, that's my two cents. I'll get off my soap box now. I hope at least some of this made sense to someone. It's a little early in my day to attempt producing an awe-inspiring statement of profundity. But in case this was lost on everyone, basically what I'm saying is that we have a great group and I'm thinking this will be a summer of swing to remember. |
| |
Meeshi, Gabe, Maya...You're ALL RIGHT ON!!! I think it's alot more than just a "Spring is in the air" kind of a thing. We've had a few great "gone for awhile" dancers return, like Maya and Dax. I feel they make a HUGE difference in a small community like ours. That, combined with the decent number of good dancers from out of town that have been showing up on a regular basis, is creating a "fertile dance climate" here in "America's Finest City". In addition, I think we're just all becoming better dancers. We've able to FOCUS MORE ON THE MUSIC, (and yes, Gabe, on "Swing Music"), and as we do, cool things start to happen. IT'S HAPPENING!!!! Benno, we need a San Diego Swing Scene tee shirt that says that! (In blue, too, please). Okay, maybe not. But IT'S STILL HAPPENING!!!! |
| |
i just want to add to the "Lindy Love" that's been going around by saying that i have had more fun dancing this week than i have had dancing in san diego for a long time. i hope this is not only a one-time thing. let's keep this energy going because we will all benefit from it! thanks to everyone who danced with me! |
| |
I think we might want to convince the east coast out-of-towners to become permanent San Diego residents. Ah, Spring is in the Air. |
| |
Yes, it was a great night at the Firehouse! Welcome to so many visitors from out-of-town: Julie Swann from Boston - thanks for the wonderful dances. I think my debt has been paid! =) Megan from New Jersey - wow! there's Hollywood style in my home state. Thanks for all the great dances. Rumor has it she'll be back with her family band in a couple of weeks at the Casbah (the Danielson Family) Susan from New York - Welcome to San Diego! Jack from LA - Good to see you again! Come down more often and bring the LA style with you! David from Philadelphia [other names escape me, please help me out here.] Thanks for making this mini-San Diego Invasion week a blast! -HopMichael |
| |
And of course, having Marty and Carla giving us a taste of DC dancing only made the evening completely awesome! -HopM |
| |
Last night at the Fire House was really great!. I was amazed all the faces I didn't recognize. Finally someone told me we had a lot of out-of-towers, and with that I ran around fast as I could dancing with anyone I didn’t know =) What a blast. I haven't been going out much but I'm gona try to get out more (seeing as I work at home now, woot! =) Ok, so let's say 3 days a week... Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat... that's 4. Oh well =) |
| |
Well I for one had a terrible time at the Rocket on Tuesday (as a few of you noticed an commented on) but that was largely due to news I recieved right as I got there... Dennis's mix actually sounded really interesting, but the evening was lost for me. Last night however was incredible. I don't know what was going on... but I got there past 11 and I felt like I had a full night. There was this just awesome energy in the room. I don't even think I got more then 10 dances, but the ones I had were great. Interesting that everyone else seems to think the same. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
Also Dean from Albany NY (my old home town) by way of LA. |
| |
I really had a fun time dancing, and spinning the tunes for you guys last night, thanks for coming out! |
| |
Well, Ron, and I enjoyed your dj-ing! It was a fun night even though a lot of regulars were missing. |
| |
I loved the music you were playing! What a great mix! You rock! |
| |
I had so much fun, and Ex. Desserts was great too. Also, I want to put out a public apology to Lee for clocking him in the face last night. I don't know if he reads the forum, but I'm gonna apologize anyway. And to Mike, your quick stops are dangerous. And also to Mark, when are we girls going to get all fancied up for you at your firehouse? I forgot what weekend. See ya all tonight hopefully! |
| |
My quickstops are only as dangerous as my follows! Sorry, Lee. Maya doesn't know her own strength...=) -HopM |
| |
Maya, you were cracking me up with your manhandling of Lee! I especially liked the way you dipped him! He probably enjoyed the whole thing. |
| |
It’s okay. The doctor says that I just need to drink my food for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be eating solid food again in May. Lee |
| |
It's ok Lee. Karma got me back yesterday when Mark swiveled me a bit too low and my knee went out. (Note: this is not a statement of blame on Mark. This was my own damn fault for trying to do something I knew I couldn't.) Besides, as Laurel said, you probably liked the attention anyway. Which is hard to deny when we have your "creative" dancing style as proof of your love for being in the spotlight. |
| |
All the same I still feel bad and responsible, and I will make ammends, I promise. |
| |
You got ripped off Maya. I think a knee giving out is worst then an elbow in the face. You got to talk to this Karma and tell it that this was not an equal trade. Besides, I would never wish harm on friend (even when they smack me). And I don't know where people get the idea, but I am a very sky person... I think. :-) |
| |
maya, sorry about your knee & if i rammed into you at all during my euphoric stage, feel better chica... |
| |
Thanks Penny. My knee is actually fine. I just didn't want to run the risk of injuring it further what with Catalina and Herrang coming up. It hurts, pops and cracks all the time. It's something I've learned to live with. A little ice, some stretching, strengthening and PT does a world of good. Btw, Penny, what euphoric state are you talking about? |
| |
...the one i get from dancing. |
| |
