ummmm...[but we need more follows!]

Really? But perhaps if we had some nice new, tall leads, I'm sure more new follows would follow, especially if the leads were anything like our current fireperson-dancer. ;)

Oh my goodness..... I just caught up with this string...what have I started???....If this ever comes to fruition and the lady follows pay a visit to the fire"station" Im not to sure now who exactly will be the spider and who exactly will be the fly...

but if I had to bet money it would go on the lady follows being the spiders...

Yes! A new follow in town! (actually, she's been an honorary SD follow for ages).

I'm glad to see one of LA's most fun dancers has moved into the San Diego orbit.

Does this mean Shawn is going out dancing more often?

You guys have another new follow in town - well sort of. My girlfriend, Julie, is a navy nurse and is stationed at Camp Pendleton. She just moved to the area last week and is dying to go dancing. She lived in Seattle before which is where I am and Lorraine says you guys are the bomb so I want make sure y'all get hooked up. Julie is awesome at lindy, bal, and shag (ok, I may have a biased opinion). Hopefully she'll post here soon so be on the lookout!

Great, we need more follows! We'll look for Julie. Rocket and Firehouse often seem to have a follow shortage. Lindy by the Bay seems to have a lead shortage. Anyone have any explanations? or make up one?

Okay, I've only seen one short mention of it so far in another thread, so I'm putting mine here.

Whoadamn, was the Firehouse every taking after it's namesake last night both in spirt and in literal heat. I had an incredible night, and I know I'm not the only one who thought so. We had _so_ many great dancers there last night. Today I'm noticing a few that I missed, especially since reading the forums but I still didn't manage to dance with everyone I meant to.

I just wanted to give my thanks to Meeshi, Melissa... I'm not sure who was DJ'ing (Ron? Meeshi?)... and everyone else who had a part in it. Great night, thank you.

I was DJing... and you're welcome. I had fun spinning for everyone. I even spotted Chris and Shana grooving pretty seriously to a slow song.. they can do it all.

There was a really excellent vibe going on there last night. I love it when there's so many people. A bunch of people made the trip all the way down from LA, Tan and Valerie's class was out in full force, as were the Hollywood/la/smooth stylers. There were people out who don't come out regularly, and the people who come out regularly stayed later, in spite of the heat.. all in all, a good night.

And I liked Julia's big continuous smile as she danced her birthday dances... the swing survivor game was funny, but hazardous! I hope Mia fully recovers...

Important Announcement: From now on, ALL BIRTHDAY BABIES ARE FREE at the Firehouse or Cafe Savoy on the week of your birthday (Sun-Sat).

Just last week, a long-time swing regular asked me if it was okay for her to come in for free on her birthday. I said, "of course", but I felt bad that she even had to ask. This was not the first time that something like this has happened.

So I've been ruminating on it a bit, and thought to myself, "You know, if it was my birthday, it'd be a really nice present to be able to go out dancing with my friends for free." So there you have it, happy birthday.

Just show Hazel or Sharon your driver's license at the door and walk right in. The only condition is that you may have to participate in a birthday jam in your honor.

I'm sorry if it was just your birthday recently. :( There's always next year. :)

Hi happy people! :-)
I 'm visiting some friends in SD next week (thursday-sunday). Can someone tell me where I might be able to drag them swing dancing down there? :-)
A place with .. say, at least an hour free basic swing lesson probably wouldn't hurt either. So they can't say : But I don't know how?!
Haha I'm devious! :-P

I've heard of some places : Firehouse, Savoy cafe, Tio Leo's, Starlight something... any comments on any of them? :-)

Thanks a bunch. :-)

Check out The Flame on Monday at 7pm. There is a beginning lesson @ 7pm and an Intermediate at 8pm these are followed by a DJ'd dance. Check the Swingorama calendar for more info. Oh yah, and it's only $5 for everything!!

And since most people don't get the lyrics, being too busy dancing, here's some of the juicier ones, so you can appreciate them like I do:

From "Keep on Churnin" by Wynonie Harris:
keep on churnin' til the butter comes
keep on churnin' til the butter comes
keep on pumping make the butter flow
wipe off the barrel and churn some more

first comes the milk, then comes the cream,
takes good butter to make your daddy scream!

I wanted some butter some day
fine brown cow came my way
we kept on pumpin
butter came jumpin
I'll milk you cow til my pail is full
look out heffer, here comes your bull!

From "Do Your Duty" by Blue Room Boys:
If i call ten times a day
come and drive my blues away
when I call be ready to play
Do your duty!

if my radiator gets too hot
cool it off with a lot of sparks baby
give me all the savage you got
Do your duty!

If you find your old beds hard
that's the way it lies
I'm tired of sleeping by myself
but you're too dumb to realize

"Don't Come Too Soon" by Julia Lee:
You gotta let your sweet meat cook a long long time, you gotta let it cook, if you want it to taste real fine

you are going too fast, you better take care,
you might have a flat, and you ain't got no spare,
save all your lovin, conserve all your power,
and if that doesn't work, then take a cold shower!

Come on over, but please don't come too soon!
so come on over, but please don't come too soon!

"He Was a Friend of Mine" by Roomful of Blues with Eddie Vinson:
I had a friend at 21, stand and watch me shave,
jumpy, fresh, carry on, never would behave,
took him to a doctor man, shocked at what he found
block of ice, a 2 by 4, could barely keep him down!

He was a friend of mine, he was a friend of mine,
he was the only friend I knew, who
could leave me here to sing the blues!

When I moved to middle age, he'd come and he would go,
I tried to pacify, but he's the boss you know,
on the days he'd stick around, wanna have some fun,
make believe that him and me were still just 21!

(chorus)

Now I'm old, take my advice, listen to what I say,
try to love don't fight so much, because you'll be old someday
every morning is different now, I wake up with the blues,
because my friend just hangs around, watch me tie my shoes!

He was a friend of mine!

"Good Rockin' Man" by Roy Brown (147):
Baby baby pull down the shades!
close the windows, lock all the doors!

Don't you know, don't you know,
don't you know, well you know,
don't you know you're daddy wanna rock!

I'm a real young man, so much alive,
so baby let's start, some rockin jive,
I'm full of rhythm, how about you,
so let's get together like the young folks do!

"Lovin Machine" by Wynonie Harris:
well you pull your lever on the right,
two arms jump out, wrap all around you,
make you scream and shout!

Come to my house I've got something you've never seen,
I've just built me a brand new lovin machine!

"Sixty-minute man" by Dominoes (129):
lookee here girls I'm tellin you now,
they call me loving dan,
I'll rock em roll em all night long,
I'm a sixty minute man!

If you don't believe I'm all I say,
come and take my hand,
when I let you go you'll cry oh yes,
he's a sixty minute man!

There's be 15 minutes of kissin,
then you'll holler please don't stop (don't stop!)
they'll be 15 minutes of teasin
and 15 minutes of pleasin,
and 15 minutes of blowin my top! (mop mop mop)

"Doctor Blooze" by Bluesiana Triangle
you know some women call me the doctor,
others call me their loving man,
some women call me the doctor,
others call me their loving man,
i'm a hard regulator,
and I got the remedy in my hand

you know I ain't no doctor,
ain't no doctor's son,
be your doctor til the doctor comes

"Rocket 69" by Todd Rhodes
we'll take our first star and the moon is not too far,
well, we'll take our first star and the moon is not too far,
we'll ride and glide and be so satisfied

Stand by, stand by, the rocket is ready to fly!

"My Man Stands Out" by Julia Lee:
down at the beach when we walk by
the other girls give him the eye
cause my man stands
yes my man stands out
I'm crazy about the way my man stands out

the reason I love him so much
he has the skin I love to touch
cause my man stands out!

"Red Cherries" by Floyd Dixon:
cherries cherries tra la la la
go to the store and bring me a jar
cherry I eat most every day
because a cherry a day will keep the doctor away!

cherries cherries are a lot of fun
get the good juice right on your tongue!

Red Cherries
sweet cherries
those cherries is oh so fine
I've been eating those cherries for a long long time!

Hey everyone--

Since we are in the midst of our SD-SF Lindy Exchange week, we'll have quite a few visiting guest DJs spinning for you this weekend.

Tonight, SF's own Jesse Miner will be DJing with me at the Firehouse. I really respect him as a DJ, so it'll be fun mixing it up with him tonight.

Tomorrow, a variety of guest DJs from LA and SF will be spinning at Clayton's (keeping my fingers crossed) and if there are local DJs that want to join in the fun, show up at 9:30 and we'll fit you in. Ron, I hope you can be there, too.

**IMPORTANT**--Because a few of us are planning to go to Dizzy's afterwards, we will close Cafe Savoy promptly at 12:30am, so arrive early to get in your full 3 hours of dancing. We will start the DJing at 9:30 sharp.

That's it for now. I hope you can join us in some of the non-dancing events this week, it's been so fun playing host so far.

Hey Amy--

I just realized with the Skyshow and stadium traffic, you guys realistically can't get to Clayton's until maybe 10:30 -- oh, dilemna of dilemnas. I'll try and keep Clayton's open as long as possible, but usually they need to have everything cleared and tables put back by 1:00am.

If you guys can all volunteer to help put things back quickly, we can try to stay open until maybe 12:50, we'll see.

As for Dizzy's, I don't know if it's logistically possible as an official mini-exchange event. I just thought it would be fun to hear Peter play his violin with some of SD's top jazz musicians at the late night jazz jam. There's no way Dizzy's can accommodate more than 20 of us descending upon the place all at once. It is usually packed as it is.

I think someone needs to go down to Dizzy's earlier in the evening, and see how many of us they can realistically let in. FYI, there isn't much room for dancing and a lot of what they play is not danceable, but it's a great place to hear some straight-ahead jazz music.

Thursday at the Firehouse its:

Goofy Swing night!

In my continuing quest to keep things interesting, my theme this Thursday will be Goofy Swing tunes! Goofy swing tunes are tunes that have fun breaks, interesting rhythms or patterns, goofy lyrics or are otherwise unique. Un-metronome like. Come ready to play! I've picked out songs of all tempos and from all swing sub-genres to spin. Don't worry, these songs aren't totally out there, I play most of them already anyway.

I'll be spinning Goofy Swing tunes from 9:30 to midnight!
