ummmm...[but we need more follows!] Really? But perhaps if we had some nice new, tall leads, I'm sure more new follows would follow, especially if the leads were anything like our current fireperson-dancer. ;) |
| |
Oh my goodness..... I just caught up with this string...what have I started???....If this ever comes to fruition and the lady follows pay a visit to the fire"station" Im not to sure now who exactly will be the spider and who exactly will be the fly... but if I had to bet money it would go on the lady follows being the spiders... |
| |
Hey. What's wrong with the existing tall leads? |
| |
not just spiders...black widows, baby! |
| |
my roommate is 6'4" and just started learning the lead. But I think it'll be a few weeks until he'll go out. |
| |
Did we say there was anything wrong with the existing tall leads? No! We're just greedy, we want more! |
| |
i just wanted to shout out a big thanks to meeshi for the wonderful birthday present. you couldn't have given me anything more special than that beautiful sentiment. and, i want to let everyone know that i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for meeshi's role in my life. so thanks again, meeshi, just for being you. and, thanks to everyone who shared in my birthday jam and my birthday cake. mmmmm good stuff! |
| |
You're welcome, Mel. Always remember...you keep the HOP in my Lindy Hop. I love ya bunches! |
| |
Thanks Mel for being an oooomph role model in our San Diego scene. You can have my soul if I can have 5% of your oomphiness. |
| |
Only a few hours until the firehouse! I just moved to SD a few days ago and can't wait to go dancin'! |
| |
and we can't wait to have you, Aletha! see you tonight. |
| |
Yes! A new follow in town! (actually, she's been an honorary SD follow for ages). I'm glad to see one of LA's most fun dancers has moved into the San Diego orbit. Does this mean Shawn is going out dancing more often? -HopM |
| |
Let's hope so! |
| |
Yeah, but they still disappear early in the evening... |
| |
Ha! Poor Shawn still has to be at work at 7am. (Besides, I had to get up early enough to see Elizabeth talk to Bryant Gumble). |
| |
You guys have another new follow in town - well sort of. My girlfriend, Julie, is a navy nurse and is stationed at Camp Pendleton. She just moved to the area last week and is dying to go dancing. She lived in Seattle before which is where I am and Lorraine says you guys are the bomb so I want make sure y'all get hooked up. Julie is awesome at lindy, bal, and shag (ok, I may have a biased opinion). Hopefully she'll post here soon so be on the lookout! t |
| |
Great, we need more follows! We'll look for Julie. Rocket and Firehouse often seem to have a follow shortage. Lindy by the Bay seems to have a lead shortage. Anyone have any explanations? or make up one? |
| |
Okay, I've only seen one short mention of it so far in another thread, so I'm putting mine here. Whoadamn, was the Firehouse every taking after it's namesake last night both in spirt and in literal heat. I had an incredible night, and I know I'm not the only one who thought so. We had _so_ many great dancers there last night. Today I'm noticing a few that I missed, especially since reading the forums but I still didn't manage to dance with everyone I meant to. I just wanted to give my thanks to Meeshi, Melissa... I'm not sure who was DJ'ing (Ron? Meeshi?)... and everyone else who had a part in it. Great night, thank you. Ryan W. Enslow |
| |
I was DJing... and you're welcome. I had fun spinning for everyone. I even spotted Chris and Shana grooving pretty seriously to a slow song.. they can do it all. There was a really excellent vibe going on there last night. I love it when there's so many people. A bunch of people made the trip all the way down from LA, Tan and Valerie's class was out in full force, as were the Hollywood/la/smooth stylers. There were people out who don't come out regularly, and the people who come out regularly stayed later, in spite of the heat.. all in all, a good night. And I liked Julia's big continuous smile as she danced her birthday dances... the swing survivor game was funny, but hazardous! I hope Mia fully recovers... |
| |
Last night was a blast! Great to see so many of my favorites in attendance. Can't wait for the next installment of Survive-O-Rama... |
| |
*sitting at computer with ice on knee* I'm fine, just a bit swollen. I'll be out of commision until Tuesday, but it was worth it. Fun game Meeshi. I must apologize to Mike (? Whoever my partner was. I'm bad with names) for losing the contest for him. I vote that he should not be disqualified. And I can't wait to see Aleetha's pictures, I bet they're a riot. |
| |
Poor Maya! I hope your injury is not serious. To help the healing process, I just posted the photos. |

Important Announcement: From now on, ALL BIRTHDAY BABIES ARE FREE at the Firehouse or Cafe Savoy on the week of your birthday (Sun-Sat). Just last week, a long-time swing regular asked me if it was okay for her to come in for free on her birthday. I said, "of course", but I felt bad that she even had to ask. This was not the first time that something like this has happened. So I've been ruminating on it a bit, and thought to myself, "You know, if it was my birthday, it'd be a really nice present to be able to go out dancing with my friends for free." So there you have it, happy birthday. Just show Hazel or Sharon your driver's license at the door and walk right in. The only condition is that you may have to participate in a birthday jam in your honor. I'm sorry if it was just your birthday recently. There's always next year. |
| |
Man! Shawna and I just missed it! |
| |
Valorie, I hate to break this to you, but Shawna was the one who asked to come in for free last week... Tell you what, since I missed your birthday celebration at Tio's last week, please come to the Firehouse tonight as my guest. Happy belated B-day, Val! |
| |
Ooh! Thank you Meeshi! Now I definitely have to find a way to ditch my brother... |
| |
Ahhhemm... *cough* *cough* Rob |
| |
Hey Rob, you can meet me at the fire exit...I'll let you in for free there. *wink* *wink* |
| |
Hi happy people! :-) I 'm visiting some friends in SD next week (thursday-sunday). Can someone tell me where I might be able to drag them swing dancing down there? :-) A place with .. say, at least an hour free basic swing lesson probably wouldn't hurt either. So they can't say : But I don't know how?! Haha I'm devious! :-P I've heard of some places : Firehouse, Savoy cafe, Tio Leo's, Starlight something... any comments on any of them? :-) Thanks a bunch. :-) ~sal~ |
| |
Why sure, Sal. Check out The Flame on Monday at 7pm. There is a beginning lesson @ 7pm and an Intermediate at 8pm these are followed by a DJ'd dance. Check the Swingorama calendar for more info. Oh yah, and it's only $5 for everything!! |
| |
Oops, Thursday thru Sunday, Ok scratch the Monday idea out. Um, Cafe Savoy has lessons before, I think The Firehouse does too, ask Meeshi for his schedule - he's the top dog for these two events. |
| |
Cafe Savoy on Friday night has the beginning lesson prior to the dance. Details are on the calendar! |
| |
Don't forget about the FREE lesson at the Champion Ballroom dance Sat. the 16th. And there's bound to be someone to "teach" a couple of beginners if they happen to "stumble upon" Lindy by the Bay while out taking in the sights at Mission Bay Park on Sat. afternoon. |
| |
Thank you all for relying. :-) Thanks Jane for supplying me with ideas! hehehe. :-) |

Hey everyone-- Since we are in the midst of our SD-SF Lindy Exchange week, we'll have quite a few visiting guest DJs spinning for you this weekend. Tonight, SF's own Jesse Miner will be DJing with me at the Firehouse. I really respect him as a DJ, so it'll be fun mixing it up with him tonight. Tomorrow, a variety of guest DJs from LA and SF will be spinning at Clayton's (keeping my fingers crossed) and if there are local DJs that want to join in the fun, show up at 9:30 and we'll fit you in. Ron, I hope you can be there, too. **IMPORTANT**--Because a few of us are planning to go to Dizzy's afterwards, we will close Cafe Savoy promptly at 12:30am, so arrive early to get in your full 3 hours of dancing. We will start the DJing at 9:30 sharp. That's it for now. I hope you can join us in some of the non-dancing events this week, it's been so fun playing host so far. Meeshi |
| |
Hey Meeshi! Don't forget: a bunch of us (like 40!) will be coming to Clayton's after the ball game tomorrow night! Don't leave without us! |
| |
i hate to be a bother.... but does firehouse have like free lesson? I don't really care about it, but my friends.. they're very... eeeh about it. They wanna go, but not if no one's teaching. ~sal~ |
| |
Nope, not usually. |
| |
Hey Amy-- I just realized with the Skyshow and stadium traffic, you guys realistically can't get to Clayton's until maybe 10:30 -- oh, dilemna of dilemnas. I'll try and keep Clayton's open as long as possible, but usually they need to have everything cleared and tables put back by 1:00am. If you guys can all volunteer to help put things back quickly, we can try to stay open until maybe 12:50, we'll see. As for Dizzy's, I don't know if it's logistically possible as an official mini-exchange event. I just thought it would be fun to hear Peter play his violin with some of SD's top jazz musicians at the late night jazz jam. There's no way Dizzy's can accommodate more than 20 of us descending upon the place all at once. It is usually packed as it is. I think someone needs to go down to Dizzy's earlier in the evening, and see how many of us they can realistically let in. FYI, there isn't much room for dancing and a lot of what they play is not danceable, but it's a great place to hear some straight-ahead jazz music. |
| |
Hot da-n! Peter's coming with his violin!! For those who've never seen him perform, you MUST hear this guy play jazz violin! -Hop "Stephane Grapelli" Michael |
| |
That was an awesome routine you guys did Valerie, Meeshi and company! Sorry for cutting the volume in the middle. 'DOH! If I don't get to see the "final draft" on sunday, I sure hope you guys have arranged for someone to video tape it. |
| |
I hope Shauna didn't break her arm. |
| |
Yeh, I hope you're okay, Shana. Those were some impressive lifts, I'd break something just thinking about it. |
| |
It was great presentation. Shows a lot of time and effort was spent in practice by Valerie, Chris, Shana, Billy, Susan, Dan, Meeshi, and the the rest (sorry I forgot the other dancers). I hope Shana did not break her wrist like I did playing rugby many years ago. Thanks Liz and Meeshie for the Workshop. Finally I can say having a "Buddha belly" can actually be useful. Joe |
| |
Joe, you used to play rugby? We'll have to swap war stories sometime |
| |
Nat, they have a women's rugby league that plays down at Robb Field in OB on Saturdays (Jan.-June, I think). You should check it out. And there are big tournaments down there several times a year also. You can get more info through the Robb Field Park and Rec. Dept. |
| |
Jane, Thanks for the info. I watched one of the tournaments a few weeks back. Unfortunately my rugby-playing days are over - too old and too damaged a shoulder. Plus the thought at what it would take to get me back into that kind of physical condition again.... |
| |
Thursday at the Firehouse its: Goofy Swing night! In my continuing quest to keep things interesting, my theme this Thursday will be Goofy Swing tunes! Goofy swing tunes are tunes that have fun breaks, interesting rhythms or patterns, goofy lyrics or are otherwise unique. Un-metronome like. Come ready to play! I've picked out songs of all tempos and from all swing sub-genres to spin. Don't worry, these songs aren't totally out there, I play most of them already anyway. I'll be spinning Goofy Swing tunes from 9:30 to midnight! |
