What are you doing before the Bobby Gordon Trio perform at Champion? Come out to "On Broadway" ...why...because David Patrone's band will be playing there from 6:30-9:30. There is no cover charge before 8pm (though it might be wise to make a table reservation - don't even have to eat, maybe appetizers or a drink). There is a lot of dancing space and according to David Patrone, "[y]ou would impress, intimidate, and expand the awareness of every single one of these people who think a hot move is wiggling their vinyl-clad tuckus while swinging a cyalume lightstick around. Men and women alike would flock to you asking for lessons and venues to go swinging." Be aware if you come down - they definitely screen for dress code. They expect people to dress to impress. Consider it as a nightclub... so, if men you donned your fav hat, some dark slacks & a bowling shirt that would be fine. Women, you know you can always look dressed up if you tried, so no T-shirts and old running shoes. For heaven's sake its free live music. |

Hey Thanks Amy, By the way, I'd like to mention that I probably won't be singing BUT Romy Kaye is going to be beltin out some tunes with my band. If you haven't heard her, her style is somewhat eclectic, like mine but she's more sultry. I have a doctor's appointment this morning and I'll find out more about the Vocal Chord Status. The presentation at this place is incredible. If you like sushi, this is the place to go for a cool, trendy night. They have a full menu with great food and definitely make a reservation cause they're usually booked solid by Wednesday. Tell them you're good friends of mine and they might sway a little. The number is: (619) 231-0011 And I hope to see you folks there. As a matter of Fact, I think I'm going to swing up to see Bobby Gordon afterwards. DMP |

Can someone give me directions (well, addresses will work -- I'll just use mapblast) to both these places? |
| |
The calendar on Swingorama has directions and maps to Champion. |

On Broadway is at 6th and Broadway (For you people who aren't familiar with NAUNL that would be the 600 block of Broadway. Pretend Broadway is "D Street. Feel free to read below for a lesson in NAUNL or North American Urban Navigational Logic: For those of you who grew up in a somehat rural area, we offer the following lesson in Urban Navigation Logic (UNL). Usually in an urban or suburban area, city streets are named in a specific scheme such as the names of trees, presidents, states, numbers, letters, fruit, the periodic table of elements or flavors of ice cream. As opposed to the rural naming standard like, "Brewery Road "Okeefenokee Beltway" or "the road three miles past the red barn with three hex signs on it." Usually there are numbered streets and in most cities with a major water port, the closest street running perpendicular to the port relates to the body of water: Harbor Dr., River St., Bay Ave., Ocean Dr., Delaware Ave., Hudson River Dr. or even Benjo Ditch Lane. After the body of water street there will usually be a "Front St." After Front street there will usually be first, second and so on so that the higher the number, the further you are from the port. All streets running perpendicular to the numbered streets will be named in a standard usually going north to south starting with "A" street; however, there will often be exceptions to this rule due to the era of the urban expansion of a city or the specific influence of one of it's founding fathers or favorite sons. There will almost always be a Market St., State St. Commerce St. or Main St. somewhere in the downtown area which will usually interrupt the naming standard and depending on the importance of a historical or local, significant event you may find streets that also interrupt the naming standard such as Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Danny Thomas St., Frank Rizzo Lane or even Flatulence Way. When using the category naming standard such as the tree name or gem name standard, they will often run in alphabetical order, for example: Ash St, Birch St., Cherry St, Dogwood St. One exception to this rule is in the presidential naming standard which will usually run chronologically according to what order said president held office. This explains why there are so many "Adams", "Washingon" and "Jefferson" streets around the country. Persons who name streets are often unimaginitive and run into a problem with certain letters and rather than peruse their botanical tomes for a solution will simply cheat and throw in a weed or vine or of course, change the naming scheme altogether. For some reason, no one wants to name a street "Japanese Red Split-leaf Maple" no matter how beautiful the tree is. Luckily for you, San Diego follows the most popular naming standard almost to a "T" and you can find 6th and Broadway (Substitute for "D" street) quite easily if you apply this to your urban navigation logic. Thank you for supporting live Jazz in San Diego. David Midnight Patrone Urban Navigational Logic Founder and Co-Host |

David, Are you playing there every saturday night? A bunch of us swingers go to On Broadway just about every weekend so this is like the best of both worlds. |
| |
Here's the deal with On broadway, I'm out of commission for a couple of months so I won't be singing for a while but I'm bringing all different bands in to play jazz and of course there will be some swinging going on. the band's won't be strictly swing but they will be some of the best musicians you've ever seen in San Diego including Gilbert Castellanos, Romy Kaye, Mikan Zlatkovitch, Glen Fisher, Hollis Gentry, Glen Fisher, Janice Edwards and more so just come on by and you'll definitely have a good time, additionally, we are going to start it on Fridays as well so you can drop in for a great dinner and then if you get bored with the dancing there, you can bop on down o Claytons. A true win/win situation if I ever saw one!! I'll start singing again in late December or early January. There will be more details later: DMP |

Bobby Gordon! |
| |
I vote for these: Bill Elliot Mora's Modern Rhythmists Bobby Gordon Lavay Smith (groovy) |
| |
Indigo Swing hahaha |
| |
The Glen Miller Orchestra! Actually, Lavay Smith, George Gee and KGB Trio would be at the top of my list. I still haven't been able to make it up to Neiman's but I'm pretty sure I'll be there next Monday. |
| |
The Glen Miller Orchestra was the first big dance I went to when I first learned how to dance. Who else remembers that show at UCSD? I remember seeing Margaret and Meeshi dance...they made the front page of our school paper...Carina still has the clipping. |
| |
Bobby Gordon! |
| |
hey melba, i think i was at that dance. i've been to a couple dances at ucsd and i think that was one of them. but, i really don't remember that much about it. |
| |
It was a loooong time ago. At least 4 years. |
| |
oh, never mind then. i wasn't around yet. i must be thinking of another event. |
| |
Well, I know that that event coincided with Meeshi and Margaret's first class at UCSD. There has been a lot of dances at UCSD since then, though. We hosted Indigo Swing and I think Pete Jacobs, if I remember...and BTO has played tons of times...other ones, too, I'm sure...just can't remember them all off the top of my head. |
| |
I was there. I'd love to see that photo of Margaret and Meeshi from the school paper. You should scan it and post it! |
| |
Don't have a scanner. I don't know if she does actually still have it, but I can ask her. I remember Margaret was wearing a red dress. |

Bobby Gordon! |
| |
Okay okay okay. Bobby Gordon on December 3rd plus... Chicago 6 <----These guys are great! on December 10th plus... Sue Palmer for our Christmas Party on December 17. Support our local bands. Once we hit a consistent 150 dancers every Monday night we will, I swear it, bring out the big dogs like Lavay Smith, Swing Session, Eddie Reed, Bill Elliot ect. As you know, Neimans is the most beautiful weekly swing venue in all of Southern California. Every week we have live music. We have dinner and a full bar. We have GREAT teachers. We've been conditioning the floor. We have discounts for students, SDLHS members, and military. It's the perfect place to dance. All we need are more dancers. We have been hovering around 60 people. We'll throw the party. You keep it going. Here is our Live Band Line Up for the Year. Monday, November 12th COOL BLUE Monday, November 19th SUE PALMER Monday, November 26th DEL BYBEE BIG BAND <---Awsome! Monday, December 3rd BOBBY GORDON Monday, December 10th CHICAGO 6 Monday, December 17 SUE PALMER COMING NEXT YEAR Swing Shift David Patrone Sue Palmer Bobby Gordon Cool Blue Del Bybee and...Lavay? If you want this to happen, put the word out and come out to Neimans on Mondays. Okay, nuff said. I love San Diego! Shesha |
| |
Oh yeah...The Swingin Kings What do you guys think? How can we make Neimans your Monday night home? Shesha PS. We will be closed for Christmas eve and New Years eve. We need a vacation! |
| |
WOOHOO!!!!! Unbelievable, Shesha! Fantastic!!! P.S....better have them take the tables OFF THE DANCE FLOOR for "Cool Blue". It's going to be PACKED!!!!! |
| |
What about Mora's? |
| |
I second that, Kitty! With heavy sigh! |
| |
Yay!! That's a terrible Monday for me, but I'll try to make it!! Must go to Bobby!!! |
| |
Dean Mora would have been right after "....Bill Elliot", but he just did the "...etc." thing in place of ''...all the other bands you love but San Diego usually can't afford". |
| |
The drive (about 45 minutes from Lemon Grove) makes it difficult for Michelle and I to make it to Neiman's. But now that she has a new position at work, I'm hoping to be able to start making it regularly. Wouldn't it be cool if we could get a big enough crowd to have bigger bands in San Diego.... |
| |
I wonder if Mora's Modern Sextet is affordable, as opposed to the entire band. |
| |
Ye - I have carpooled with Jeff each week and I'm in Santee. I know others are driving up from San Diego, maybe you guys can join someone. (Just a thought - and definitely cheaper) |
| |
Well, it's not really the cost, just the time involved. When we both have to wake up early for work, it's hard to stay out late. It's a 1:20 mintue commitment just driving for us. |
| |
Make an exception for Cool Blue on Monday! |
| |
Dean Mora Sextet...Terra and I will look into that for next year. Eddie Reed has a quintet as well. Shesha |
| |
Neiman's was a lot of fun last night. I'm really glad I made the long drive up! |
| |
Oh, don't complain about driving boy... there's many a north county kid who drive 30-40 minutes to get to downtown two to three nights a week. You downtown folk sure are strange... |
