Ron, thanks for posting this biographical information. I love Ella Fiztgerald's music -- especially the recordings she did with Louis Armstrong -- but I never (until now) learned anything about her life. I teach Thursday evenings but am going to try to make your "Evening of Ella" event at the Firehouse afterwards. -- KC |

why does this have to be when i'm gone????? i LLOOVVEE ella. i love her. i adore her. i idolize her. she is my absolute favorite musician. if i were on the west coast, i would be there. actually, if i were anywhere but where i will be on the 12th, i'd be there. sep 12th will be my 1st time ever in new york, so that's kind important and exciting for me. i'll be back in s.d. the 17th, then to s.f. for the exchange, but back for good and starting work at my new cell, i mean cubicle oct 1st at 7:30 a.m. ron, maybe i could persuade you to save a compilation for me. i'll listen to it while driving to work, and i'm sure it will prove more interesting than the stock report. love to san diego -and san diego djs who play ella :-* -from michigan ~ Ray |

Ron, how 'bout a copy for LbtB???? Hmmmm??? |
| |
Oh no, Jeff, its a special one night only. One night of non-stop Ella will be enough, more than enough in some people's opinions, I'm sure. Besides, Rachel asked first and she's cuter. |

Hey, Meeshi or Ron, Did anyone find a packet of photos that I may have left mistakenly at the Firehouse last week? If so, could you bring them there tonight and re-unite them with me? Many thanks, -Hop "Losing his marbles" Michael |
| |
Does anyone know if Meeshi's offering a class before the Firehouse tonight? What's the scoop? Someone I know was asking. |
| |
They were sitting on the piano at the end of the firehouse. I dont know if Meeshi took them or not. We didn't know who's they were. |
| |
Stuff that gets left at the Firehouse generally goes into a box under the desk behind the DJ booth... |
| |
Dancers beware - Firehouse is gonna be good tonite. |
| |
Oh great, Meeshi's letting you DJ? ;) |
| |
Remember: this Thursday its going to be a very special evening at the Firehouse. I'll be featuring Ella Fitzgerald for 2 hrs starting at 10pm. (I'll probably play some instrumentals beforehand.) Ella has so many songs that are excellent for Lindyhopping. She has a wonderful voice, she's backed by some great bands, including Basie, Ellington and Chick Webb, and she swings and scats like hell. Many of the songs have catchy lyrics or melodies. She sings excellent or even definitive versions of some of the classic American songs. The best hot jazz it is not. The best jazz vocalist of all time, maybe. The best jazz vocalist for Lindyhopping to: definitely. |
| |
Remember, I'm giving away compilations of Ella, as well! I have to figure out a better way to do that than "first person to come to the DJ booth..." When I did that at the Rocket a while back I started a stampede... Any ideas? |
| |
Also, Meeshi and I were talking about sharing a night and doing an all Duke Ellington/Count Basie evening. That could be way cool, too. |
| |
I am definitely looking forward to that. I especially like her version of the classic "Mack the Knife" |

either a raffle or a dance contest???? or just give it to all the short-haired brunette women |

Hopefully there will be a good crowd tonight, despite recent events. I'm going to have a hard time keeping my Ella block to 2 hrs, she has so much good stuff. I'm going to play a couple of really slow songs (70-80 BPM), and at least one really fast song "It Don't Mean a Thing!" at 280 BPM! But the bulk is 115 to 160 BPM, with a few more at 170 to 190 BPM. I'll also pick out my songs based on the crowd, of course. So I'll see you all tonight! |
| |
Ron, I am really looking forward to tonight! I can't wait! |
| |
I can't wait either, and hope to see everyone there. |
| |
So who's going to Extraordinary Desserts beforehand? |
| |
Im not, Im going to a poetry reading with Brian, or so I've been told. Have fun those who are going. |
| |
"poetry reading"? and you believed him? ;) |
| |
To all Lindy Hoppers of San Diego: I'm thinking of placing a collection box for donations to the American Red Cross at the table of the Firehouse tonight. Not only is blood needed, but money for rescue operations, medical assistance, shelter, clothing and general support of disaster workers and victims will be needed. I'll guarantee the funds. The donation will be given in the name of "Lindy Hoppers of San Diego." Dance and share the joy of life! -Hop "Do the Right Thing" Michael |

well, I didn't make it to new york. I was one day late. I guess that it's much better that I'm not there. I would be extremely bummed about that if there were such other, much more horrible things that happened. But besides new york, i also missed Ella! I hope you guys in sunny s.d. had fun this evening. I danced in Warren, MI, but it's just not the same. I'm sure the music in s.d. was much, much better. Take care all. and wish me luck flying home, hopefully monday. ~Ray |

Ron, in regards to believing him with reference to a poetry reading, yes I did. And, he proved to be true. We went to a poetry reading help on the PLNU campus called "Musoffe". It was very nice. |
