uh, hello! How many hypocrites? Well, we know we have at least one. Talk about giving it a rest... that coming from the man who solely pitted half the swing community against the other half yappin' about how no-one could dance fast and that the music sucked. and by the way, I am the voice of reason ~8^) |
| |
Uh, yeah. Please tell me how exactly is it that I'm a hypocrite. I'm just sick of people who feel the need to jump into every conversation as the so-called voice of reason when they obviously do so with their own biased intentions. And in any case, I'm certainly not the one responsible for dividing the swing community. I just believe in standing up for myself if I am wronged. But of course, that's all in the past now, and it's not my place to name names here.... |
| |
Oh yeah, and I never said that *nobody* could dance fast.... |
| |
ok.. not you alone, but you can't say you weren't part of it. How are you the "H" word? Cause you and half your cookie cutter kid club (CCKC) jump in with your own biased intentions on a daily basis... poo poo-ing this, diss'in that, thinkin' y'all are the only ones who know what Lindy is/ is not and what music is swing, etc. So, you're not the only big H, but your the president of the CCKC... |
| |
oh my lord. You're so ridiculous, Andy....it's not even funny. |
| |
But then, what about the do-gooders who always want everyone to get along, who see me and my so-called "club" as the sole antagonists in every war that erupts on this forum, and who always feel compelled to jump in and brush off any of our complaints as nothing more than "angry young people" trying to start shit? This blind self-righteousness only reveals your hypocrisy. You and your "club" seem to think you're helping out when all you're doing is making the same sort of attacks that you accuse *us* of making. At least *I* know when I'm being antagonistic. Do you? |
| |
Good idea, Terra, giving discounts to those who support your newsletter. Makes good sense. |
| |
Let's take a break from Clayton's tonight and get a drink! We need to quit splitting hairs and have some fun!!! It's FRIDAY NIGHT!!! See ya at Clayton's. Peace. Out. (Sorry, Krista, I think I stole that from you...) |
| |
Jeff you will be at Clayton's to dance tonight...right? Amber and I are driving (listen up all you North County residents) down after the traffic jams are over. I have some friends coming out for the lesson. Terra & Shesha - Thank you for bringing live music, for keeping a beautiful venue running... and for putting up with all our complaints and comments. Neiman's is by far my favorite place to dance - proved by me coming on Monday even though Amber wasn't out. For the rest of you - yes, Jeff the bartender is a great guy and he's just doing his job. Order a water and pay the buck... or just get a drink (there are non-alcoholic drinks too) |
| |
Yes, Amy, I'm heading down there in a few minutes. I got the pictures developed!!! They're great!!! |
| |
I think most of you have missed the whole point of offering a discount for specific people: INCENTIVE and FRATERNITY You're not getting a break in price because you have some kind of special right to it, promoters and clubs and any other entity ofers a discount to a certain slice of the population as an incentive to attract that type of person, or in some cases, to attract as many people as possible. There are several schools of though on this I.E. Offering dicounts to regulars to keep them coming and make them feel part of a select group Offering dicounts to new members to attract more business Offering discounts to people in exchange for permission to advertise and promote (AKA Mailing Lists) It's human nature to try and get something for nothing or even something for less but fair is fair and the only way to police those individuals who would lie or use other fraudulent means to get a break, is to require identification and proof of membership no matter what. Don't think of it as an insult, think of it as a fraternity. If you forget your membership ID or whatever, the punishment is a higher entrance fee. Any organization has these rules at functions and events. in the Marines we used to have what was called a "Challenge Coin" and if we were at a group meeting or off duty function and someone challenged you, if you didn't have your unit's coin you owed everyone a drink. Offer the incentives to the people who you wish to target but require every single person no matter who they are to prove their membership or they have to pay full admission. Hell, it's not like they have to do much to get the membership! As my Pops used to say, "Kid, it ain't nothin' personal, it's business, you understand?" Shesha and Terra are paying live bands a lot of money to come in and play for you guys. They are spending vast amounts of time and money to promote the shows and organize the events. You should be proud to pay the full amount to support and preserve such a great venue as you have at Nieman's not to mention having the opportunity to support live music in San Diego, a city which is struggling to make itself a haven to great live musicians. This reminds me of Dizzy's downtown, everytime I walked in there for the late night sessions, the hostess knew who I was and would try to be nice to me and not ask me to pay even the musician's fee which was half of the regular entrance fee and I always paid the full amount if I had it in my pocket because I want to be able to support what I feel is so important to the further development of this town, LIVE PERFORMANCE. This was true of all of the heavy cats who would come in there. It would be disgracefule if say some professional musican walked into a jam/gig like that and said, "hey, I'm so and so, I shouldn't have to pay" (though I'm not going to say I haven't seen that happen) If you are struggling and broke, that break may help you out and that's and incentive for you to join SDLHS or the mailing list etc... If I drop in to Nieman's on a night when I'm not playing there I pay the FULL COVER, even though I've never been asked to (out of courtesy I suppose for my performances there) out of respect for Shesha and Terra and out of respect for the band. I try to support Nieman's as much as possible, in fact the last two times I've played there I've taken the hit to make sure my musicians got paid what they deserved becuae I love the venue and I want to see it survive and thrive. The potential of that room is unsurpassed in North County. the fact that you can have underage people and have a bar atmosphere in the next room is rare anywhere. Quit bitchin' about 2 bucks and support the community that you have chosen to be a part of. You're here because you love to dance and listen to great music. What better cause is there to contribute to than the one you really feel passionate about and you have chosen to participate in? And while you are there, buy a few drinks too, they don't have to be alcoholic drinks (Shesha and Terra have come up with some interesting energy drinks and "swing" drinks) but sooner or later the venue is going to realize that they aren't making any revenue off of a venue like this and they'll get someone else inthere, I've seen it happen a hundred times in San Diego. Yo Dennis- looks like our sad attempt at starting a Jerry Springer-like flame war failed miserably! We must say we are proud (and a bit surprised) that folks didn't jump in and pander to the flaming. I had my bets on Krista... and almost got her ~8^) But all resisted the temptation. Just for the record, I really don't think there is a CCKC... though, if there were, Dennis you'd still be the pres he he! |
| |
*sigh* Where has all the animosity gone? What happened to the good old-fashioned wars we used to have? Oh well, I guess I'll just have to peddle my wares on Jive Junction. {8^)> PS: the flame war may have... well, gone down in flames, Andy, but my emoticons still kick ass over your fruity swishy-haired, goatee-less wannabe happy-faces. |

WOW! What a great turn out and what a great dance band. Thanks to Chicago 4 for all the great swing music and all the laughs. Bob Finch, the bass player and leader, pulled out his "bit". Half comedy - half dancing. We had (I am counting) 12 dancers from Orange County, 2 very nicely dressed dancers from Germany, to very tall follows from spain. Thanks also for all the dancers from Downtown and inland. Terra and I had a chance to get to know a lot more people because our new sound guy is kick ass and we don't have to stress about the show. Who else had fun? Next week is Sue Palmer "the queen of boogie woogie" and her Motel Swing Quintet. Join us! |
| |
Sorry I missed it. But glad I was home being "Dad". Jordan and I completed a project for school. Wow, 12 dancers from OC. Impressive. I'll try to make it next week. |
| |
Hi this is Swing Mama Hazel. We had a great group up at Neimans last night. For you all who missed it we're sorry because we had a great time. We had people from all over the world there. Hope to see you next monday. hey this is kinda fun posting on swingorama. Don't forget Mardi Gras on the 11th. It's an origional New Orleans Mardi Gras party king cake and all. Love Swing Mama |
| |
Girl, did you break down and finally get a computer?!! |
| |
Hazel! Great to see you online! |
| |
Hazel, you tell them! Amber and I danced so much last night. It was a good diverse selection of leads and we had some new dancers out there trying their hardest. Since I'm such a new dancer - I jumped in to help with the new girls at Neiman's. ... today as Amber and I were out running errands we managed to drum up some new leads and follows to come out and learn a little about lindy. Meaning: we will be needing some more dancers on next monday - I want to see us have to move tables off the floor... or have to use the foyer from being packed out. |
| |
Hazel, thanks for the cool song you gave me last night! What was the band name again? |
| |
Tonight at Neimans!!! Sue Palmer and her motel swing quintet! 9pm Swing Lesson with Shesha and Terra at 8:30 PM Hope to see you there for another jammin' night... Anyone want to carpool? |
| |
What time are you going Jeff? I might have a 10 to 15 minute meeting at 8:30p.m. |
| |
Well, I'm off to class, so I'll find out later. Have a great day everyone! |
| |
I could leave from my house at 9pm or so. That should be okay. I'll just plan on that then. Anyone wanting to go with me just be at my house at 9pm or so, give or take a few minutes. If you'd like to work it out just call me: 619.339.7117 cell |
| |
Jeff I'd take you up on your offer to drive, but well, I already live a hop, skip & jump away from Neiman's. But you're so sweet, I hope someone decides to appreciate the free ride. ... hey but Jeff, if you ever get the desire to come up to TJ's with Amber and I, you're more than welcome - and you can bring a vanload or whatever (as long as you save two spots for us). I'll see you tonight. |
| |
Thank you for my dances, Amy!!! What a fun night at Neiman's!! Sue Palmer's band is so great. And the DJing in between sets was terrific!! (Wow, haven't used that word in a while). Anyway, it was such a great evening I can't sleep. I'd still LOVE to be dancing. I had great dances with Amy, Amber, Heather and Cari, Leigh, Dierdra, Susan Byrd, and Hazel. It was so nice having a small balanced crowd. I got to dance with lots of follows several times. I wanted to dance with Margaret, too, but it just didn't work out. She and Jim looked good tonight and danced to some really fast stuff. They definitely ate their Wheaties this morning, or something! Bryant from O.C. came down, and a few others from LA/OC. We played piano and sang at our own "piano bar" in the lobby afterwards. We (Heather, Cari, Major and I) then drove some totally "wasted" people up to their home in Oceanside. Actually, I drove them in my van, and Major drove their car. They were so surprised that people would be nice to them. Of course, our ulterior motive was to recruit this couple into our dance scene, to "absorb them" like the "Borg". Well, I know this probably a lot more than anyone cared to know about, but I can't sleep! I'm home alone and still want to dance and play. Okay, I'm done. Ciao |
| |
One question? Is Heather and Cari thought of as a single entity? Are we known as HeatherandCari (one word)? Note: Jeff said: "I had great dances with Amy, Amber, Heather and Cari, Leigh, Dierdra, Susan Byrd, and Hazel. " In the traditional style of writing Heather and Cari would be split up, and "and" would not included in that sentence. Just wondering. |
| |
issues? just wondering. |
| |
Me? no, no issues, just wondering. |
| |
Just a writer's "literary license". It was my way, I guess, of saying the "Spotts Sisters"...what a great night. I'm still thinking about how much fun I had as I rearrange my house today. |
| |
Ok, I was just curious. Have fun today working on your house. Don't do too much and hurt yourself. |
| |
Didn't hurt myself! Woohoo!!! Thanks, Cari. Talk about people hurting themselves at home...I was talking to Gina, my ex, on the phone today, and she said her husband has a coworker who's wife was killed this morning when she slipped in the shower! I heard the sirens. They live in my development one block away. I had no idea what it was about. The husband was in Arizona on a Federal Agent training mission, so no "foul play" here. (David, thanks to you I didn't write "fowl play") She just slipped in the shower and apparently hit her head..fatally. Reminded me of Margie's accident, which, luckily, pales in comparison. |
| |
Hello! I usually dance in the OC/LA area but was thinking about driving down in the opposite direction to Neimans tonight. Shesha's web page is down right now so I can't get any info on the venue, like who's playing tonight and all that good stuff. I've been only once before but it was really lead heavy that night and didn't dance too much. If I make my way down there I'd like to have a couple solid hours of dancing. So if anyone could tell me about what's going on I'd appreciate it. Thanks! |
| |
You came when it was lead heavy? Remind me when that was, please! Lately we've been tiring out the leads that come, when they're willing to dance. I know that if you come, there will be atleast two follows interested in dancing for a few hours. Besides its tax day, all that stress might bring out a few extra people tonight to relax. |
| |
Leads that get tired? I don't quite understand that concept, especially when there are waiting and willing follows around Anyway, I'm probably going to come down since San Diego has been coming up to TJ's for the past few weeks. I thought I'd try to support a SD venue as well. Wow, I quite possibly could be dancing at all three of Shesha's venues this week...oh man, I just realized that I might be dancing six nights this week! I am one sick puppy... |
| |
Who are you again? |
| |
If you are who I think you are I have had quite a few dances with you. I've bought raffle tickets from you on Valentines day. I also have had a birthday dance with you as well. I'm Jason, the filipino guy. You'd remember me from TJs or LindyGroove. If you still don't remember me I'll just have to drive down to Neimans and ask you to dance |
| |
Ok, yah I know you Jason... and you're welcome to come down and ask me to dance in SD. Sorry I don't know who's playing tonight - I like to go basically cause I love the floor and the people and they play music that I enjoy. (Plus you never know who may be showing up) Amber & I are going to try and make the lesson...I'm still trying to grasp a concept on leading... so we'll see you there. |
| |
That's cool, so could you tell me the address and good stuff like that? I still can't get to Shesha's website and that is where I'd get the directions from. |
| |
http://www.neimans.com/ |
| |
Thanks! |
| |
It's Tim Gill tonight - he has a 10+ piece orchestra with a solid sound. Has been extra fun last two times he was out.... mainly cause all their friends & family love watching the dancers. |
| |
I'm coming down tonight and I'm going to bring another lead down with me! So Amy you have that many more leads to choose from |
| |
I'm coming up with Kelly from Albany NY. This will be her first Neiman's. |
| |
Oh no, Jason, are you going to start bombarding this forum too? See ya tomorrow. |
| |
I had a great time last night. Thanks to Kelly, Amy and Amber for all the great dances. And Maya, bombarding? More like scaning and lurking about, seeing I really don't know to much about the SD swing scene. I'll save all my inane topics and comments for shesha's board or even yehoodi. |
| |
Hi Jason, good to see another resident of Corona posting on Swingorama. ;-) C ya 2nite at S&T's new thing in OC. |
| |
Thanks Jason & Rob for coming down, also thanks to all the other leads who danced with me w/o complaining. I'm actually sore today - maybe dehydration - but I do know I danced and danced and danced last night. A nice agression after a hard monday. (and the band sounded nice too) |
| |
i haven't been to neimans for a long time, but i just heard a not-so-good remark on the place today. one of the ladies i work with went to neimans last night with a few friends (her first swing night ever). she told me that from 9pm-10:30pm there were about 5 couples in the room, the atmosphere was very weird because the lights weren't even dimmed, and there was no energy from the dancers or the band. at this point, she was bored out of her mind. then, at 10:30pm a few more dancers showed up and brought the energy up a bit...and they finally dimmed the lights slightly to make it a little more bearable. her over-all rating of the place was a bad one (quote "it was like going to a bad high school dance for adults"), and when i asked her if she'd ever go back she said..."most likely not". i've been trying to talk my friend into coming out dancing for the last 4 months (ever since she started working here) and i was so excited that she finally decided to go. too bad...looks like this experience might have cost us a few more newbies. |
| |
Bummer. I didn't go, but I think I know what she means. I sometimes think all of our Lindy Hop venues feel like going to a "bad high school dance for adults" when they are lightly attended. Empty venues always feel awkward to me. |
| |
Hey Shawn, the Check Spelling button doesn't work. |
| |
Mel Sorry to hear that she didn't enjoy it. I agree on the lighting and yes, there are a good deal of older folks that come out to enjoy an hour or so of live music... and yes, it seems that some of the better dancers do arrive later (after dance classes & rehersal or whatever) but we also have quite a variety of "lookers". They're the ones that I don't know what to do with. I know that if someone shows for the beginner lesson, that they will get some attention... otherwise, I can say for myself that I don't know if they're there just for dinner. I befriended a few "newbies" last night and invited them to dance. I'm sorry though, Mel, that your co-worker didn't enjoy herself. I did. |
| |
I'm surprised at her comments, Mel. I thought it was a pretty darn good night at Neiman's. The dance class was packed. People were dancing right from the beginning. I suppose it did built up momentum during the course of the evening, but Kelley from Albany said she had a blast. If anything it was a little lead heavy, but great dancers showed up. Bryant was there, Jacob, Jason and his friend for OC, Billy, Ernie, Dean and Susan, Jim and Margie, Lisa Rae, Lelani, Amy, Amber, Anna (or is it just Ann?), Leigh, Ginny, ...I mean, it was fun! The band has improved alot, but they do often sound like a high school jazz band, but I think if you would have been there, Mel, you would have thought it was a "good night" all in all. I mean, we're not professionals. I wonder what she was expecting. |
| |
I wish I could have been there. I haven't been out dancing in over a month. Not to mention the fact I'm not living in San Diego anymore. SHOCK! Yeah Im up here in the Bay Area. San Jose. I miss you all though. |
| |
Heather.. for once it was lead heavy... probably cause you weren't there to help keep them dancing. I miss you doll. Are you coming down for the exchange? OH and just to make you jealous, I get to dance with Peter Strom tomorrow night. My brother's wedding is in MN and so I'm flying out a day earlier than neccessary so I could go out dancing. Whohoo! |
| |
I am jealous! I adore Peter and the dances that I've had with him. By far some of my best. No, I won't be coming down for the exchange. I'm going out to visit my mom in Colorado. I haven't seen her since I was 12. Then off to summer camp in Fresno. Wahoo! Amy- Have fun in MN. I miss you too. Thanks. |
| |
Sorry I missed the OC contingent on Monday night. Was gadding about in NYC. |
| |
We miss you, Heather, but you are gonna love the Bay Area! I hear they have great shag dancers up there. ;) |
| |
Summer camp in Fresno...something I would not volunteer for. Hopefully you will be up in Sequoia!? |
| |
Sherri, I will actually be in Sanger. It gets to be about 106 grueling degrees there. But I spend most my time in the water so it's okay. It's a lot of fun and well worth the overbearing heat. Thanks Kermit... I miss you to. |
| |
Heather, you'll have a great time. Summer camp rocks. I have some friends my age, late 30s, who still find a way to volunteer at my old summer camp in Idyllwild. |
| |
Is anyone going to Neiman's tonight? Anyone...anyone.... Zana |
| |
chirp chirp I wanted to, but I got stuck at work. Was it fun? |
| |
It was really fun...especially Jason's special bal/overall technique...you had to be there! |
| |
Zana... I went, Jason went (duh) and we were both wondering how you didn't manage to snaggle a ride up That overall technique... hmm, wonder if you got extra points. Good think no one noticed my hair kept getting caught on SLO Jason's glasses... lol Shoot, I REALLY like the band - impressed none the less that they'd only played together as a unit that night... meshed good. |
| |
Who's going tonight? |
| |
It should be a good time at Neiman's this Monday. Mel, myself and other djs will be doing rotating shifts. Jeff is bringing in his LbtB sound system. Combine that with Neiman's ambiance and bar, you have a sure winner of a night. Be at Neimans this Monday July 5th! |
