Thanks everyone for continuing to support Monday Night Swing at Neimans. We had great fun last night. David's last set was outstanding. His voice is sounding great again. We are planning to have David back every 1st Monday of the Month. He is a great spokesperson to start things off right. BTW, boycott Pala Casino. Or David. You'll have to pick one. |

On to further news. We are putting together a KILLER Marti Gras party for Neimans Swing Night. Monday the 11th Featuring the Tim "Slim" Gill Orchestra. WE WILL BUY YOUR FIRST BEER OR COKE! Plus we will be playing music late into the night because Marti Gras is actually on the following Tuesday the 12th. We will have plenty of beads to go around, a best Marti Gras Costume contest, and Terra will set up a giant banner to Decorate. Plan on Being there. We will be packing Swing Night at Neimans and Shesha and Terra will buy your first BEER and Coke. No Strings...really! |
| |
Bla bla bla. Thanks to all the OC dancers that came down last night. |
| |
Could I make that a rum and coke? Beer and coke... well, that just doesn't sound too good... |
| |
Quit causing trouble! |
| |
Shesha thank you for bringing Patrone up to North County... and thank you for inviting your friends from OC. For all of you that missed Patrone, you missed a "show". When Patrone gets singing, you must watch him as he dances all over the stage - or you can watch his band members as they can be quite comical. I had a wonderful night of dancing (the floor was so good) and I strongly encourage any and all to come up and visit. Some good dancers have regularly been coming from OC and even LA, so come out and dance with them. |

Great musicians!!! |

Bobby Gordon on Monday??? |

Anyone need a ride for the Bobby Gordon show? I'll be driving up around 9:00 pm... e-mail me. mmhwang@yahoo.com -HopM |

Wow! What a fun show. Everybody stayed past 12. Standing ovations and enchores are always a good sign. Thanks everyone for coming out last night and keeping the energy going. Bobby Gordon will be back. Next week...Chicago 4. We loved them so much last month that we are bringing them back. I hope everyone can make it. We are creating a really nice Monday night experience for the bands, us and all of you guys. Thanks Jeff for the great talk after the show. |

"We are creating a really nice Monday night experience for the bands, us and all of you guys." As far as last night goes...the only thing good, was the band. All the drama and attitude on the side, I could have done without. Krista |
| |
What drama and attitude? |
| |
it was more on the downlow....perhaps I'm only privy to it becuase it was involving my friends. And where were you last night, Shawn??? Don't you live in No. County?? Can't you recognize Bobby's the best thing SD has goin for itself right now?? |
| |
I've been getting up real early lately, so it's hard to attend an event that starts at 9:30pm. I try to attend happy-hour swing at the Martini Ranch in Encinitas. That's an easy one for me. If I remember correctly, I "discovered" Bobby for our little scene. He was playing at that Argentinian restaurant in La Jolla. I checked it out to see if it was ok to post on the calendar, and the rest is history. I think that for musicianship, Mikole Karr is right there also. They played a little slower for the exchange, but Chris, Shana, and others have heard him really play with energy on a different occasion. He's fantastic (and lives in Oceanside). |

I personally think that all "student discounts", "SDLHS discounts", etc should go. I think it's more fair to just have ONE PRICE at the door for EVERYBODY. The band doesn't charge less based on how many students, etc. are there. One price for everyone will also prevent dancers from becoming offended if they're not recognized as a student, SDLHS member, etc. It will also prevent the individuals who put on the dances from getting caught up in "Oh, I left my student I.D. at home" conversations with dancers at the door. Terra and Shesha are new to the San Diego scene and don't know who's who yet. Give them a break. They're also getting a little beat up from Neiman's management because dancers won't pay $1.00 for unlimited water from the bar all night, but bring in their own water. Jeff, the bartenders at Neiman's, is great. Sit down. Buy a drink. Lounge a little and help benefit the establishment so that Shesha and Terra can continue to have a good working relationship with Neimans. Shesha and Terra "...are creating a really nice Monday night experience for the bands, us and all of you guys". And all the Neiman's "regulars" know them well enough to know there's not one ounce of "attitude" in either one of them. |

Jeff, I was just speaking from my night last night. This was the first Monday night at Neiman's I attended since Shesha and Terra started holding the dances. I was really stoked when they did start it, because it seemed like automatically they did have an invested interest in a thriving dance scene, and to have anyone interested in bringing live music to SD is A-okay in my book. As far as the discounts go...speaking from a starving student's point of view, people will get less of my business if I don't get handed a break. I'm not saying I deserve a discount everywhere I go, but that when people do have discounts, it is definitely an incentive for me to go there rather than the place that is going to charge me full price. I can not afford full prices. I can hardly afford discounted prices. That is why I must choose and pick when I can go out. It is just disconcerting that when I do go out, I find a lot of messed of stuff is going on. I'm not going to speak for other people. I got my discount and that's cool. I know we've had conversations on this board before about "starving students" yadda yadda yadda...but generally, I have found that the only people opposed to the idea are those of you with stable and secure incomes. Whatever, I guess it is everyone's opinion. I think that there was a lot of BULL$HIT going on last night, and it really made my first night want to be my last night also. I went for Bobby and I'm so glad I did. He, Carl, and Hal were freaking amazing. One of the better live shows I've seen in a while. I hope that if another rad live band goes through Neimans, I can go with a little less drama. As far as smuggling water in. I think that's a laugh and ridiculous. I bought a few beers last night and "supported the bar". I don't need to tell anyone, that I wish there were more bars in this city with swing to support. As far as people getting "offended", I really don't know of any, so I'm not sure what you're referring to Jeff. But perhaps you know something I don't. That's all....for now. Krista |

I completely and utterly fail to see how someone who's not a member of SDLHS or a student could be offended at student or SDLHS discounts. What's that all about. I'm not a student, I have a steady income and I fully support student discounts (in fact I'm now boycotting AMC cinemas because they've changed their studnet discount policy to where you need to fill out a form to get an AMC student discount card rather than using your normal student ID card). What's "fair" in making someone who's adopted a breadline existence in order to gain an education pay the same amount as someone who's bringing in a 6 figure salary? All I'd say is that if you want to get these discounts at the door take the appropriate card with you (student ID, SDLHS membership). If you don't have the card with you, it's unreasonable to expect the discount. |
| |
Yeah, that whole AMC thing is dumb. I had to fill out one of those forms. SD is the only place I've seen them do that, though...I don't know why. |
| |
Nat, you turned it inside out. I whole heartedly support discounts for the impoverished in our midst. I so agree with you that "IT'S UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT A DISCOUNT WITHOUT VALID I.D." It's unfortunate that some who don't have their "cards" with them are offended when what you just mentioned in your post is explained to them. My point was that if there were no discounts, then there'd be no "attitudes" being fielded by people collecting the money at the door, and then after the conflict at the door, bringing that "attitude" into the venue. Generally, students are on a "breadline existence", whereas SDLHS members are spread pretty evenly among us. I'm all for students who bring their I.D. cards with them getting a discount. I don't see why SDLHS members need a discount. How did that get started anyway? Maybe SDLHS subsidizes swing venues and helps pay for bands. If that's the case then I'm all for them getting a discount. But if not, that's like giving a discount for having a Costco card. |

Any of you guys remember that commercial where the cashier made Bob Dole produce two forms of ID before he could use his credit card? This all kinda reminds me of that.... |
| |
I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Only the one I was thinking of wasn't Bob Dole. It was some other famous celebrity that wasn't recognized and had to cough up I.D. Those commercials were so funny. |
| |
Actually, the satire in the commercials was that they *were* recognized, but they still had to produce the ID.... |
| |
"My point was that if there were no discounts, then there'd be no "attitudes" being fielded by people collecting the money at the door, and then after the conflict at the door, bringing that "attitude" into the venue." Again, Jeff, I don't know what you're talking about. What event did you witness to spur all this talk? |
| |
Discounted admission to swing events is one of the reasons to become a member. It's a pay-off, you supply an annual subscription so that the society has some gold in the coffers to pay up front for the organisation off events, inreturn you get discounts. Although personally I have to admit to having joing solely for the purpose of acquiring a T-shirt. |
| |
Krista, what did you mean by your original post? "As far as last night goes...the only thing good, was the band. All the drama and attitude on the side, I could have done without." Was it not because of some of the issues we're discussing? And I'd prefer to keep the subject general in nature, rather than point fingers at any individuals. |
