egads... The Rocket's going to look like a Gap commercial this Tuesday... But I agree with Ron. That's really funny. |
| |
They could play those 2 songs for the B'day jam circle: Jump, Jive & Wail and Crazy Little Thing Called Love Aren't those the ones that were in the GAP commercials? |
| |
There's something post-modern about re-creating the Gap commercial which itself was co-opting a part of music history for the sake of selling a pair of pants. So I ask you is that ironic or what? -Hop "Danced swing before Gap and before Swingers, so there, nyaaa!" Michael |

Can't wait! It will be hilarious to see :-) |
| |
Thanks everyone who dressed up. Bill have a great time.... |

Justin and Jenn's Carolina shag demo was fantastic. The pace of the class was FAST, but great fun (still working on those boogie steps). Thanks to everyone who took the time to dance (and give vintage fashion shopping tips) with/to our aussie visitors last night. They (-1) will be making a repeat appearance at the Firehouse on Thursday. When I first started using this board, people used to thank partners they'd had great dances with out dancing the previous night. Well last night I was feeling under the weather, but went out kind of against my better judgement. Thank you to the following for turning the night around for me: Chris (vindicator) - I felt you were right there for me on the dance floor every single second ShadowCharlie - do the laws of physics actually apply to this man, wow! Charlie - rock solid bodily lead and a two-way dance conversation Tan - 'nuff said Tom - you're my fave Carolina shag lead - now I just need to learn haow to dance it (small detail)Bill, birthday-boy: thanks for joining me in the late night attempt to lindy hip-hop. Nat |

I agree - that Carolina Shag demo was awesome - it looks so smooth and groovy, and I loved the Shag music Justin played. He did a great job dj-ing too - a nice mix of music styles and tempos. Can we maybe get someone to come give a longer workshop in Carolina Shag? |
| |
I had a total blast last night! I had to drag myself to the Rocket because I was so tired and cranky and then ended up staying till midnight! I thought the class was fun, too (uh, I don't know if I'll ever get the foot rolls, though) and I really enjoyed the dj-ing - a very nice mix of tunes, like a breath of fresh air. Thanks everyone for an energizing night! And whattayaknow, I'm not grouchy at work today! Shoot, did anyone bring a camera to immortalize Bill night? |
| |
There was a lot of energy. Justin's Car Shag looks like fun. It certainly might help if I could blend the moves into Lindy. Erin from Victorville thanks for the dance. Katie thanks for the great ice cream pies. Joe |
| |
You're more than welcome for the pies and thanks to everyone for making Luci's last night in San Diego a great evening of dancing. I agree -- the music was fantastic and the energy level was awesome! But, as a novice dancer, I'm a bit confused by the Carolina Shag. It felt (triple-step/triple-step/rock step) like East Coast Swing. Am I totally off in that comparison? Happy Birthday Bill -- and thanks for all the dances! Kathy |
| |
Yes, you ARE totally off in that comparison Other than the basic foot rhythm (tripple, tripple, rock-step), which is the same for most all 6 count patterns in most all swing dances, they are NOT at all alike. As you grow beyond noviceness (is that a word?) you will realize that it's the styling/technique, the connection, and the music that make that basic rhythm one dance or another. Boogie Woogie is another "swing" dance with the same count but a totally different look and feel. I'm by no means an expert on or at Carolina Shag or East Coast Swing, but I believe these are the basic differences: Carolina Shag's basic is (very basically): forward-together-back, tripple in place, rock back-replace forward (tripple-tripple-rock step). Done in open position with an in-out movement. East Coast Swing's basic is (again, very basically): tripple to one side, tripple to the other side, press back-replace. Done in open or closed position with a side-to-side movement. Carolina Shag is usually danced in a slot, East Coast tends to be circular. Carolina Shag is frequently danced to moderate tempo, mellow (laid back) music. East Coast Swing is usually danced to faster tempo more "hyper" music . East Coast feels and appears "bouncy" , Carolina Shag is very, very smooth in feel and appearance. East Coast Swing is a lead-follow dance. Caroling Shag has a lot of "learned" (choreographed) patterns that are executed when called out, usually by the follow. East Coast shows off the lady or the couple, Carolina Shag shows off the man. East Coast is easier to learn and become good at than is Carolina Shag. I hope that helps. |

Pam Thompson is teaching tonight at 8 pm. I did an internet search and it is very interesting to see how several people throughout the country have listed her as their tap instructor on their resume. Must be very well known throughout the dance world. Margie is very enthusiastic about this instruction. So much so, that if she could, she would make it a requirement that all her students should attend. Tap shoes are not needed. Plus, Little David and Susan Bird are handling the music. Sounds like fun. Certainly seems like it is an opportunity that I don't want to miss. Joe |
| |
Great job, Susan! Cool mix of music! |
| |
Yeah, dittos. Susan needs to dj more often in San Diego. |
| |
Roll Reversal @ Rocket, Tuesday, 8/6 - 8 pm. |
| |
The Role of the Lead is to guide the Follow through moves like the Reverse Barrel Roll. Roll over Beethoven! Rock n Roll has taken over your musical Role. The sergeant's Role was to prepare the Roll call. -Hop "ROTFL" Michael |
| |
OK, Michael's been hijacked by aliens again. |
| |
This Tuesday, Doug Silton and Dax Hock are confirmed to be driving down from LA. It'd be great to see some ol' timers (particularly follows) out to remind these guys of the wealth of dance talent in SD! We've got some really amazing dancers right here at home. Spread the word! And don't forget the Role Reversal class at 8pm. We had such fun last time... we'll be continuing and introducing some fun new stuff. Can't wait. |
