Just a reminder--

Melissa and I will be gone this weekend for the SF Lindy Exchange, so both the beg/int and int/adv classes preceding the Firehouse will be canceled for this week only. Classes will resume next week (Thursday, Sept. 27) at their regularly scheduled times:

7:00 -- Beg/Int Lindy
8:15 -- Int/Adv Lindy (partner switching routine)

It's not too late to join in, drop-ins are always welcome, though Mel and I plan on moving swiftly through the partner switching routine when we get back. Have fun without us!

Meeshi

The Firehouse will be open this Thursday, the 20th, even though Meeshi will not be in town. So please come out!

I will be DJing, along with an as-yet-unannounced someone else. If you have a song you want to hear, feel free to make a request. If I have it, I'll play it (as long as it's a song I won't get beat up afterwards for playing). Of course, my collection is about 1/8 of what I'd like it to be, so don't get mad if I don't have something you want.

Gotcha... Anyone know about Claytons on Friday?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By I'm not running for Jesus (Dennis) on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 - 03:31 pm: Edit

I second Valorie's question... also, will there be a lesson beforehand? I have some non-dancing-but-interested-in-learning friends who are, well... interested in learning.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Tertia (Lindyslayer) on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 - 05:09 pm: Edit

I am so glad that you asked that question Valorie. Here I go again...ahem...

San Diego Lindy Hop Society will be your host this Friday at Clayton's. We will be holding our final round of the Jack and Jill contest that has been going on for the last few months. Which means that if you were a finalist from any of the past contests, you must be there Friday to compete in the Final round. Also, for you spectators out there, come on out to cheer these folks on.

Bring your friends that don't dance for the beginning lesson before the dancing begins. Our guest instructors for the evening will be Charlie Yi and Emily Belt. Even if you are not a beginner, come early for the lesson. It is always nice to have good role models for these beginner dancers.

And if the other two reasons were not good enough for you to drag your self out on Friday, then just come out because of the music. There will be guest DJs that will keep you dancing till your feet hurt.

Oh, one more thing...SDLHS members get in for just $3!! What a deal. Those of you that need to renew your SDLHS membership, you can do it on Friday. And those of you who want to join, do it on Friday as well. Afterall, the Rob and Diane workshop is coming up and if you are a member, you get in for the member price.

See you all on Friday!!

The Firehouse was really hopping last night. Great crowd, great energy, thanks everyone! There must have been 40 people still dancing at 12:30pm, and they wanted to keep going! I was playing a lot of groovy/jazzy songs last night, and they seemed to go over very well. We had a jam for Ye Dancer/Jeremy. Anders and Ben from Seattle were there, worshiping our fabulous San Diego follows. Speaking of which, most of my favorite follows were there... I had excellent dances with Laura, Beth F., Tricia, Rachel, Tanya, Laurel, others.

For anyone interested, I've added last Thursday's playlist to the playlists I've posted:
http://www.swingorama.com/music/ronsplaylists.html

I post playlists periodically. I was playing a lot of my favorite groovy/jazzy songs that night and I thought it would be fun to document them. I've noticed I'm playing a lot more of that stuff than I did 2 years ago.

My current favorite songs (a lot of which I played that night) to play for you guys include:
o Sunny - Ernestine Anderson (143)
o Wade in the Water - Eva Cassidy (114)(my most requested song)
o Wild Women Don't Get the Blues - Dennis Rowland (138)
o Shiny Stockings - Ella & Basie (used to play this a lot 2 years ago)(128)
o Sweet and Lovely - Mary Stallings (107)
o Silks and Satin - Count Basie (115)
o Let Yourself Go - Stacey Kent (165)
o I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water - Lou Rawls (live) (185)
o Big Game Hunter - Steve Gibson (165)("I'm a Big Game Hunter Gotta Big Game Hunter's Gun! Yeah!")
o Matza & Grits - Al Grey (155)
o Oh Lady Be Good - Bill Elliott Orch (198)(I'd overlooked this song until recently)
o Jump Ditty - Joe Carroll & Ray Bryant Quintet (138)(Steven Mitchell taught routine to this recently)

It's funny Ron, someone mentioned to me thursday night that you had been playing quite a few sex songs that evening. Anything on your mind?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron (Ron) on Wednesday, October 03, 2001 - 10:21 am: Edit

In that genre I played only "Big Game Hunter" and "60 Minute Man", I think.

The only thing on my mind is you, baabeh.

That was a great evening at the Firehouse last night!!

Lots of new follows filled the welcome dance circle.

Zana is simply a star! She was a bit bashful at asking leads to dance, so I encourage the leads to ask her to dance. She's an amazing import from Portland. You won't be disappointed!

Mari from Chicago has moved into the Lindy compound at Isgard's. She has got to be one of the most generous Lindy hosts out there (she hosted about 10 San Diegans during the Chicago exchange this spring). She drove across country to settle in our fair city. Welcome Mari!

Lee from Sacramento/Davis, Natalie from LA (?), and David from NYC (anyone I missed?) rounded out the newcomers.

Welcome one and all!

-Hop "Finally, more follows!!!" Michael

Since I'll be heading out of town for the Austin Lindy Exchange this Friday, Ron and I has graciously agreed to swap DJ duties with me this week.

Therefore, I will be DJing again at the Firehouse this Thursday and Ron will DJ at Clayton's on Friday, so plan your week accordingly (whatever that means).

Have fun this weekend and hopefully I'll see out at Neiman's tonight!

For those of you that will be here this weekend... Be on the lookout for Rob Van Haaren and Diane (Thomas) Van Haaren, who will be here this weekend teaching a weekend long workshop! Keep your eyes open for them Friday night at Clayton's. Men, Diane is a spectacular follow, and Ladies, Rob is an awesome lead, so get your butts out on Friday night to check them out!!

Also, we still have some space available for the workshop. I suggest signing up in advanced so that you don't miss out on this opportunity to take classes from these WORLD CLASS instructors. I encourage all levels to come, we will make sure that everyone benefits from this workshop. You will not be disappointed!

See you all then!

Oh, yeah! Rob and Diane! What should we do about LBtB? What
would work out best? Should we have it, or is there something else
going on that we could all do together?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff Eldridge (Jeff) on Tuesday, October 09, 2001 - 11:25 am: Edit

Tertia, I can't find the thread for the Rob and Diane workshop. I don't even
know where it is, times, etc...Please put it back up on the Swingorama front
page to let people know about it. I want to register for it.

Thanks,

Jeff

I'm concerned about the weather. I just spoke with Peter, the
manager of Food and Beverage at the Hilton, about having the
LBtB in the "fine dining" section of the Cavatappie Restaurant.
It would be sooooooo perfect! They'd bring in a hardwood floor
and put it in the area that's behind the bar under that huge atrium
and skylight area. He's going to go over it with the Hotel GM and
get back to me. It's may be kind of a long shot, but I'm hopeful.

What's the forecast for the weekend? Today it's actually raining
in places. We definitely need a backup plan.
