Who is going tonight (Wednesday night)? They are having a costume jack and jill dance
contest, a free swing lesson at 8:30 and open dancing at 9pm. Show up at 8.

The address is 14988 San Canyon Ave, Irvine Ca 92612.
But it's actually at the end of Burt Street off the 5 freeway. It's behind
the La Quinta Inn. Look for the blaring neon sign.

Tia Juana's in Irvine is only 30 minutes from
Oceanside. It is much closer than Memories used to be.

I will be there!

We should have dance videos on the bigscreen as well.

To anyone who knows, is Tia Juana's a regular event in Irvine and do people who actually dance go there instead of drunk people who think they're dancing? I live like three exits away from it and need a local venue. A swing teacher up here told me it wasn't any good but he was a jerk so I'm asking all you nice folk who may know better. Thanx, Maya

What swing teacher up there would say such a thing. Tia Juana's is the only happenin place in OC. We are going on our 6th week. We had 120 lindy hoppers there last week. This teacher is misinformed. Tia Juana's Wednesday Swing night is kicking ass! There are tons of really really good dancers there. We had only 1 drunk last week but he came in off the streets. See you there!

Awesome! I'm there. Ya, the teacher seemed a bit skeptical about the place. When I asked where there was to dance he replied, "OC dancers are homeless." He then said there was a place on Mondays at South Coast Plaza, but that the dancers were very territorial. I took that as a "good luck" kind of comment. And a few of the kids in his lindy class smirked and said there wasn't really anywhere, that they all go to LA, though they wouldn't say where or offer their information so that a fellow lindy hopper and newbie in town could hitch a ride and not feel so out of place. Overall I had a fairly bad impression compared to SD's warm welcome attitude for dancers. Thanx for the real info though. I'm stoked. I thought I'd have to keep going home Monday nights to go to Niemans for close and sociable dancers.

You are going to be very happy!

PS. Who is the teacher? I would like to inform him about the OC swing scene so that he can send his students to Tia Juana's in Irvine.

Thanx for the site. It' bookmarked. As for the teacher, I don't remember his name and if I did I wouldn't mention it 'cuz he knows who you guys are (seeing as he mentioned you ran Tia Juana's) and I don't want to start anything. We've all seen on this forum how badmouthing venues can cause un-needed trouble. He just seemed arrogant and "too cool" for his own good. But if I meet any kids on campus who dance I will spread the word. see ya'll Monday.

Maya, do you know me? I'm Gene's girlfriend. I'm going to check out Tia Juana's for the first time tomorrow night. I probably know everyone there. I'll point out some FRIENDLY OC dancers to you!

Also, the Monday night dance at South Coast Plaza is at Birraporetti's, which is on Bristol Ave, on the south side of the mall. Its attached to the mall but it has its own entrance. If you see the arching footbridge with blue lights, you're there.
Don Miller plays there every Monday night. He has, in spite of our protests, started playing about 60% salsa, 40% swing. The dance floor is one of those parquet jobs, usually pretty sticky. The dancers are nice enough but a bunch of us stopped going due to the excessive salsa. I don't go anymore, its too far for me to drive, but you should give it a try. Its free, plus if it sucks, just go shopping!

That would be awesome, thanx! I'm pretty sure I know who you are...I'm really bad with names and faces, esp. of follows though. So grab me and give me a good shake so I'll remember. (i'm guessing you know me, right?)if not, let me know and i'll wear somthing really loud and obnoxious so you'll know where i am. see ya there!

I probably met you, but it is hard to keep track of the follows kuz we never have time to sit around and talk! I might wear a "bad kitty" tshirt tonight, so I won't be hard to find. Otherwise, look for a tall blonde with geeky glasses acting like a maniac. I let my hair down when I dance in OC, as opposed to behaving myself when I'm in SD!

Tall, tall, tall and very slim, with fab curly blond pre-Raphaelite hair (Bad Kitty, that is).

yeah, I kinda like the idea of re-inventing myself somewhere that know one knows me. If I had more hair, I'm sure it would be down tonight too. I need the distraction. And Nat, you should write dirty novels, I bet you'd be good at it. :)

Hey all! I went to Tia Juana's last night and had a great time. I met some super nice people and Shesha is a great DJ. If any of you ever get the chance, come on up. It's a cozy bar atmosphere with lots of room to dance. But the people need groove. There is no groove or play in their lindy. Everyone kept commenting on my "style," which I wasn't aware of having, and actually asked if I was from SD. They were all very envious that I came from such a kickin' swing community. And thanx to Bad Kitty for the hospitality. Nice people just make your day. (or night as it were) Miss you all and see yas in DEC. Maya

Thanks to you, Maya! It was fun hanging out with you. I hope you got in enough good dances.

Tia Juana's felt like Monday night at the old Memories. Maya's right about the style of dancing going on in OC. That's where I learned to dance, so now you leads understand that deer in the headlights look I get when you give me time to "play". We just don't do much of that in OC.

Maya has that Herrang look - there must be something magical about that place - everyone who has been is just a fabulous dancer.

Nat, with that description, I'm surprised Maya recognized me. Thanks! I'm really not that slim anymore, though, thanks to Gene. We feast a lot. Hmm, thought I was the one with the "portly arse". ;-)

bad "feeling Reubenesque" kitty

I wouldn't mind comparing those arses...
*smirks* Yes I got a lot of good dances in. And thanks for the compliment Kitty, though I am feeling a bit "out of style." I haven't been around Mel enough to soak in her sleek stylizations. (Or attempt to anyway) Can't wait for Peter and Maggie. Must learn new things and better connection and how to spin. Lord knows that girl's got the best twirl around. There are lots of spinny people in OC too. It made me realize what I need to work on. See ya'll for Cool Blue. I feel it will be worth the drive! And Bad Kitty, keep coming out Wednesdays and let me know of any other nifty spots you may try to attend. Together we will shed oodles of pounds. I just remember I never lost an ounce at the old Rocket 'cuz it was right next to Denny's and we would all go and eat ice cream and sampler platters afterwards. Ahhh, Memories...

Wow, Mems is where I lost a ton of weight. I resisted Dennys...
Clayton's has been my downfall. Gene forces me to eat a slice of pie every time we go there. And then there's the awesome bar at the Hilton. After LbtB, we get these killer strawberry daquiris...
Maya, you don't need to lose an ounce. But I'll let you know when I head out to Lindy Groove. I think you'll like it.
And next time I go out, I'm asking every guy in the room to dance.

Is anyone going tonight?
I will probably stay home with my sore throat and cough instead of sharing it with all of you.

I went, just got back in fact. Good time, short on leads though. Though I haven't seen a jam session in awhile, not sure how I feel about that though...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By bad kitty on Thursday, November 15, 2001 - 09:47 am: Edit

Did they have a jam circle last night? I haven't seen one for months, either. Seems that they only happen at special events anymore.

I know I'm having one next week. Monday's my birthday. Hopefully, I'm having Sue Palmer singing my Jam Song!!!!! What a birthday present!

I think you are getting "jam circle" mixed up with "birthday jam". Which brings up an interesting question...How many San Diegans, who have started dancing within the last year, have actually witnessed a real jam circle?
