gotten to dance if it wasn't for the Rocket.

Wow. Well, if anything, the slogan got a good debate going. Basically, the idea was to catch the attention of students and make them think, "what's this about?" or "this sounds like something different."

I really don't think that very many students are going to get offended at the slogan. After all, the cafe doesn't serve alcohol, so people are going to come to dance, not to drink, which is often the opposite in many non-swing dance clubs.

By the way, Lisa, I have no idea what you mean by "force your (general your) morals on others." I would have a drink or two before dancing if I didn't have to drive. And if I'm at Neiman's or Tio Leos, I almost always get a martini or a scotch or something. In fact, if there was a full bar at Cafe Savoy, I'd think it was great.

I never said you were preaching or that you were dictating morality. I, too, was talking about the motto, which, to me, implies that people who drink and dance are immoral. Nor was I getting touchy...trust me, you'd know if that was happening.

Regards Tio Leo's...it's not a swing venue, despite what people may think. They have all different types of music, Thursday night being what they call Rockabilly/Swing night...and the last time I was there for that it was packed.

Regards the Rocket as the biggest swing venue SD ever had...well, have to disagree with you there too...it was actually the Bora Bora room at the Hanalei Hotel years and years ago and it had a bar. There were consistently 500-600 people there every Friday night. It was so crowded that we had 100+ people for dance classes on a regular basis. Whatever contributed to the popularity is open to discussion, but it did have alcohol and those 25-30 people I know who don't go anymore went there.

Also, regular, non-dancers who are over 21 like to have a drink when they go out, which may contribute to the lack of new people in the scene. There's nothing to offer people outside the scene except the dance itself, which isn't always enough to keep them interested in coming back.

So, I still think the statement is exclusionary...so there. haha

Oh Jeremy, we had a good debate going about nothing, kinda like a Seinfeld episode, and you had to go spoil it by being reasonable. I still the slogan is silly.

So sister Lisa, who gives you the evil eye when you've had a drink? Either I don't get the evil eye when I drink or I'm oblivious. Wait, don't answer that...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Lisa Conway (Lisaconway) on Tuesday, September 03, 2002 - 05:45 pm: Edit

Jeremy,

Even if you may not be intentionally dictating morals by this statement, it's implication still exists. By saying that "real men don't dance drunk", you're (general you're) saying that if you drink alcohol, then you shouldn't dance or even be at this venue. Therefore, those who do drink will be outcast before even walking in the door.

Also, why even have a statement like that if there's no alcohol served? It just doesn't make sense. But, since it's there, it implies that if you have a drink before you come then you're not welcome.

Also, I've had past experiences where I've gotten •••• for having a drink before going out dancing at certain local venues.

And I still think it's exclusionary, and therefore, I'm gonna have a drink on Friday before heading over to Cafe Savoy...Word.

See..that's why some of us go to Martini Ranch on Tuesday nights - live music & he usually lets us play our cds for his breaks...and there's drinks. *shock* If I wasn't flying tomorrow, I'd indulge in one *double shock*

Whatever.

haha Amy, i'm not the least bit surprised that you would indulge in a drink.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Spawn of Satan (Melbamoose) on Tuesday, September 03, 2002 - 09:25 pm: Edit

it doesn't matter who indulges or not. Lisa is absolutely right. The motto implies that you're not a real man if there is drinking and dancing involved together. That's totally retarded (how's that for pc?). And, I think Reuben mentioned somewhere else...what do real women do???
As far as trying to get students interested....you're really not going about that the right way. This isn't UCSD. This is STATE. People don't go to state to find cool places to "dance sober". You're totally misunderstanding the student population there. And the fact that "CAFE Savoy" is at a cafe right there tells anyone with half a brain that there is no liquor. But to say only real men don't drink and dance says if you were to drink, you're not a real man, and if that's not passing judgement, I don't know what is.
Amy, if you want to go to Martini Ranch, and you like it...more power to you. But Patrone is a whole different can o worms.
"I really don't think that very many students are going to get offended at the slogan. "
no, they might not get offended, but they're not gonna want to come in. I don't even know what the motto is trying to say about other dancers (read non swing dancers), but at all the other non swing dance clubs I go to, dancing has nothing to do with alcohol consumption. This is of course ruling out TJ...
And as far as Lisa noting she's been given •••• or the evil eye when dancing...she's not alone. I have had several people tell me things and assume an awful lot. I've never once been drunk while at a swing club. I like to dance. It's hardly practical to spin while drunk. I like to drink, too. When I know people are going to pass judgement or declare an area "alcohol free", I'd rather just save some bucks for a place that doesn't give a rats ass about your personal decisions about what you do or do not want to consume.
I was instantly taken aback by the slogan when I checked out the site. I instantly felt that this was a place I wasn't going to be welcome at because I don't think one's manhood has anything to do with sober dancing. I just thought that was unfortunate, since the venue options are so limited to begin with. That is why I asked in the first place. But I'm thrilled that one question spawned all this talk. Kept me entertained today fo sho.

Peace
Krista

Frankly, I'm shocked that anyone would get so offended over a tongue-in-cheek statement like that slogan. The idea was not to send some sort of message to the dancing populace, but to catch the attention of first-timers who are checking the place out. We apologize if we offended any of you.

I know people who go to SDSU, and they are not all drunken party animals. There are students there who are interested in things other than getting drunk. Those are the people we are looking for.

And I think it's pretty significant that we didn't say, "Cafe Savoy, where real men don't drink and dance." I could see how that would make you feel the way you do. But, "Cafe Savoy, where real men don't dance drunk?" I just don't get how that's offensive.

I could care less whether or not anyone drinks or doesn't when they dance. I don't even think about it, unless they're throwing up on the dance floor or something. After all, there's a major difference between drinking and getting drunk.

Krista, you are always welcome at Cafe Savoy. Sorry if we gave you the impression that we think drinking and dancing shouldn't mix. I actually like to have a drink or two before I dance. It helps me to get rid of my inhibitions.

Jeremy: I was offended by the anti alcohol statement. I felt specifically targeted by the remark and I didn't get the impression that it was tongue in cheek at all. Do you think there will be enough room to dance what with the M.A.D.D. meeting going on and all? ;)

Amy: I don't LET people play their CDs during breaks, I ENCOURAGE IT.

Krista: There are no cans of worms at my shows; however, in some rare circumstances there are bottles with one worm in them. Speaking of which, I haven't seen you there in a while... Have I offended you in some way? The show is a lot different these days. Since my wife moved out I don't feel the need to drink so much. Now I focus on promoting unsafe sexual maneuvers.

Dave!!!! Ole Buddy,

Thanks for attributing the quote to the correct individual. My over tasked brain couldn't come up with it last night but I knew you would jump in here with it. As for the rest of your post....My friend you have your finger squarely on the pulse of American society!! Oh and you owe me a beer, I don't know why, but if I can convince you of it then I get a free beer :-)

Keep the faith brother,

Gin? Well, I guess I'd drink it ;) I do dig martinis though so it'll make up for it. Damn all this talk about drinking makes me want to get my license SOON so I can celebrate w/ drinks!!! Also, I miss cocktailing :(

Last night was cool, not AS loungy as I was expecting cause too many good leads showed that I wanted to dance with. *whine, whine, whine*

"Swing Pit" has such a cool website! http://www.swingpit.com
It gets me excited about swing! I think that should be the goal of
any site. It appears that the Cafe Savoy "motto" is accomplishing
something else. It's at best very distracting. It takes my mind off
dancing and on to alcohol, and more specifically, my particular
use of it. Even though I personally don't drink I feel the motto is
exclusionary.

Well, Jeremy, if you've scared away Krista from coming to Cafe Savoy, you will have accomplished one good thing with your motto! ;)

David-
I really like the Homer Simpson song.

Krista,

Would you have come if the slogan didn't "exclude" you or are you just starting dialogue?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff (Jeff) on Wednesday, September 04, 2002 - 01:52 pm: Edit

Ron, Krista's a great dancer. Her absence has NOT been a good
thing, even though she was spawned by Satan. (I know you're kidding,
but others may not).

Personally, I think the "motto" may encourage some to show up drunk
in protest.

David, that was good. Intellect being used intelligently. Very cool.

Krista, I hope you come to see Reuben DJ....even if you HAVE been
drinking. And besides, it appears to to be okay if real WOMEN dance
drunk. Or wait a minute! Are women allowed at all? Does the motto
mean the place is only for sober men? I'M SO CONFUSED!!! (8^?)

Actually, it will be good to see you again, Lisa. With so many beginners
at "Lindy by the Bay" and elsewhere these days, I find myself continually
going over the history of our scene here in SD and how it began. Your
name, of course, is always at the top of the "family tree", so to speak. In
fact, I think it would be appropriate, and long over due, to have a "Founder
of Lindy Hop in San Diego" dance for you at Cafe Savoy on the 7th. I don't
know if Julia will be there as well, but wasn't she with you from the beginning
as well?

Julia was there almost from the beginning, but my original partner hasn't danced in years. It's a long story. Some day I'll write my biography.
