3 words.... Titan Hot 7 (from Tennessee).... good ol' dixie/hot jazz... they friggin' rule |
| |
Josh Collozzo and his Feetwarmers. I've heard of some other bands, too, although I've never heard them. What about Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five? Anyone heard them? |
| |
they were pretty good at Camp Hollywood when I saw them. Had a nice Django sound to them. I think Jonathan Stout sometimes plays with the Feetwarmers as well. |
| |
Shawna and I made the trek for the campus 5 last week...they were good, a lot of standards as well as fun other stuff. Very danceable for all levels. |
| |
Those are definitely the kind of bands I'd like to see. I like the groovy jazz and blues bands, but they get boring after a while. Which makes sense considering they do not cater to lindy hoppers. I'd like to see a band every once in a while that caters specifically to lindy hoppers. I'd also like to hear some music that kicks my butt, instead of stuff that makes me want to sit back in my chair and sip some scotch, or maybe just go to sleep. p.s. I think it's rad that Mel and Chance are doing so much for our scene, and would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for doing so. It's completely awesome that they have worked so hard to bring teachers and bands to our city. And the fact that they ask for feedback shows that they really care about our dance scene and that they want to bring dancers what they want. |
| |
I totally think that the Feetwarmers are an awesome band. I don't think a lot of people in San Diego appreciate them as much as they should. I got a lot of negative feedback from dancers from the exchange about how the Feetwarmers were too fast. My response to all that made that comment, "Are you f-ing kidding me? Shut up and dance!" |
| |
and if it is too fast for a song, shut up, sit back and enjoy some great jazz! |
| |
Dancers would rather dance to a mediocre band than half dance/half listen to a good band. Its just the way it is. |
| |
The Feetwarmers are amazing. But it's interesting to me, (but not surprising, for reasons I won't delve into now), that they played their stuff more moderately and not quite as fast at the LA exchange than the SD exchange. I love it personally when the band is great, and the mix is varied so all levels can dance most the time. |
| |
Well it's obvious most dancers aren't in this cause they care about good jazz. Hehehehehe....oh, this is too easy, today. |
| |
Yeah, the Feetwarmers did tone it down for the SD Exchange, I noticed. And people were still complaining that it was too fast? That's insane. I distinctly remember most of their songs being in the 150-180 range, and there were a ton of ballads too. Events need to be recorded so you can show people the tape and say "you are on crack!" |
| |
I think maybe people just hear good swing, and assume it's fast. They equate good music with fast and therefor claim not to be able to dance to it. Give them groovy crap and they think they've died and gone to heaven. I can't explain it Julius, it's an enigma to a lot of us... |
| |
If I read Jeff's post correctly, he thought the Feetwarmers toned it down in LA not SD. I believe it to be the opposite. Julius' post was on target. The complaints I overheard at the SD exchange were about Dean Mora and I still can't figure that one out. I enjoyed both bands. |
| |
To clarify a bit...the fast stuff at LA was really fast, true. There were some great dancers there that knew what to do with it. But I feel there were alot more moderate tempos than were played in SD, to accommodate dancers from SF and other parts of the country that don't generally dance "as fast as frequently" as those in LA. I've heard Dean Mora when I've really liked them. I didn't like their performance in San Diego etiher. I think they had an off night. To me they seemed as though they'd rather be anywhere else, and in my opinion, sorta played like it. I can dance really fast now. And I love it when I have a follow who can as well. We're workin' on it. |
| |
"To me they seemed as though they'd rather be anywhere else, and in my opinion, sorta played like it." Well, if the band overheard remarks like the one I did: "Let's go hear a real band play," then perhaps Mora would have preferred being elsewhere. This comment was made loudly and quite publicly in the lobby at Champion's. |
| |
Well, that sucks for sure. I think every band needs to be encouraged while they're playing. |
| |
Hey Look! Darlene and Susan posted! Hi Ladys! I like to think of "Fast Lindy" not in a SPEED sense, but as "small, abbreviated, close & tight"! and that fast-last night of the exchange made me very happy! ![]() |
| |
Ye gods, Nancy! You dug up that long-buried photo of Darlene and me coming out of a 3D movie -where'd you find it? |
| |
What a cutie you are Susan... I didn't know you get crescent-moon eyes when you smile. hee-hee ![]() |
| |
Speaking of Mora's, I turned Jesse Miner onto them (I think) at the Chicago exchange a couple years ago when I played "A Viper's Moan" (142 BPM) from Call of the Freaks and he asked about it. I talked to him this weekend in Austin and he mentioned he plays it and gets good response. I also turned him onto Cool Blue, an entirely different band. I think that if both bands played at the same time there would be a huge matter/anti-matter like explosion obliterating everything within miles. Or maybe not. |
| |
The 2nd photo is much better...! And its pretty rude to rag on bands at their show... They aren't my favorite to dance to, but they play good tight jazz. |
