Maybe you'll just have to let the audience be the "Judge".... Oh, I crack myself up. |
| |
oh geez! |
| |
lol! |

I am new in town, from LA where I used to dance at the Derby. What are the happening places for the weekends? And are they really clic-ish? Samantha |
| |
Just head over to Claytons on Friday night or the special event this Saturday at Champion. They are great! |
| |
Hiya Samantha, You could always swing on by Pal Joey's located at 5147 Waring Rd. San Diego on either Friday or Saturday night. We'll be jumpin the place up both nights starting at 9:00pm. and there ain't no cover. If you do come by step up to the bandstand and say hi. Big Mickey www.jumpjones.com |

Welcome, Samantha. You'll see all the "usual suspects" in the San Diego Lindy Hop scene at "Cafe Savoy" at Clayton's on Friday. Once a month, Meeshi has a special event at Champion Ballroom, which features a live band. It's always a blast. It's happening this Saturday. "The Firehouse" at the San Diego Center for the Moving Arts" is every Thursday and always bring out the best dancers. "The Rocket" at Portuguese Hall in Point Loma on Tuesdays is our nicest regular venue in terms of the building and size of the dance floor. We also have a North County event each Monday at Neiman's in Carlsbad. It's a beautiful restaurant with a good sized dance floor. Neiman's features live bands each Monday. All these venues have great teachers that run them if you're interested in lessons. (There are a few other "lesson oriented" venues that meet on Mondays at the Flame, and Sundays at Tio Leo's, but the open dance times only go to 9:30 or 10pm. ALL these venues and locations are here on the Swingorama site. Just go to the "Calendar" and you'll see them all. As far as the "clic-ish" things goes, in San Diego I believe it's "ancient history". The "LA style" and "Savoy style" dancers are pretty much "meeting in the middle" and we all have a great time dancing WITH each other and learning FROM each other. The DJ's are all playing a good mix of "vintage swing" and "groovy swing" now. I think it's turned out to be a really nicely balanced dance community. |

hey all my lovely SD dancers. I have a slight problem. Here I sit in front on my computer at 10:15 p.m. after returning from an empty Rocket. Imagine my frustration having just had ass handed to me on a silver platter by UCSF finals only to have my hopes and dreams shattered by having no dancing on a Tuesday night. So my question is this; is the firehouse open this thursday? Someone please say yes because I am in desperate need to dance after not having a chance to go out for the past three weeks. Tony |
| |
Yo! Tony, my Man!! Yes!!!! There is light at the end of the Lindy tunnel!!!! Meeshi has both events cookin' this Thursday at the Firehouse, and Friday at Cafe Savoy, aka "Clayton's". And so, your thirst for the "HOP" will be quenched this Thursday and Friday!!! See ya there!!! |
| |
OK. Now I'm really sad. Not only am I here in Alabama, but I am also missing out on Tony being in San Diego. * sigh * Monday night, I made an attempt to check out the only thing here resembling lindy hop; but the people putting the dancing on never showed up. |
| |
Jeff, you are my savior. I will definitely have to thank Meeshi also. The man always comes through. I can not wait to see ya all tommorrow night. And val don't worry I will be back in SD soon, and will reserve you plenty of dances if you are at the mini exchange Tony |
| |
Tony, I should be back Dec. 28th for the mini exchange (as long as weather, car karma, and parental pressure don't interfere). So, I'm definitely looking forward to dancing with you when I get back! |
| |
Well, Valorie if you miss the 28th, come dance with me and Tony at LBtB from 2 to 5 on the 29th!! (Sorry for using you to make a shameless plug!) |
| |
Val, I hope you are surviving the parental units out there. Have they tried to keep you yet? You must come back. Just remember to breathe... and be careful coming home. Shawna |
| |
I seem to be surviving ok so far. Today I got a bit of pressure to move from San Diego. Ugh! So far, my plan to begin driving back on the 26th still holds. ;) |
| |
I heard that FireMark is Djing at The Rocket Tuesday. Is that true? If so I'll definitely be there. |
| |
thats what he told me. |
| |
oops my mistake its Feb 19th. Sorry |

Yet more out-of-towners here this week: Linda and Steve, from Santa Cruz, are in town for their daughters graduation. They are a nice couple, I met up with them last night at Neimans. I've traded music with Linda. I got the songs "Big Game Hunter" and "D'eat yet, Joe?" from her, among others... Also I met Titus (I think) from the Seattle area who is in town for the week. He serves on the USS Ohio (boomer submarine) and when he's not on tour, makes a long drive to Seattle to dance. Yes, he knows Lorraine! Its looking like we need an out-of-town visitors welcome dance Thursday... |
| |
So I tell someone my name at the Rocket last night, and get the response- "oh, you're the submarine guy..." So, thanks for the advertising, Ron. The venues the past couple nights have seemed rather sparsely attended, but I've enjoyed the dances. I'm very much looking forward to the Firehouse... -Titus |
| |
"oh, you're the submarine guy..." - that would have been me. And well worth the advertisement. Thanks for the dances and welcome to San Diego. Hope to see you out at the other venues. A whole slew of out of towners should be at the Firehouse on Thursday. Nat |
| |
Yeah, and it happened again last night at TiaJuana's. (I suppose it helps to have your name on your shirt sometimes)... I had some nice dances with several people there, but I think they were almost all from SD, the rest of the crowd was more of a struggle. Hopefully my headache goes away by this evening, and I can make it out dancing still. If so, I'll see you then. -Titus |
| |
You suffering from the bends again, Titus? |
| |
Thank you Titus for wearing your name on your shirt - I might never have asked you to dance, so yes it helps to publize yourself. Again, it was wonderful dancing with you last night. Definitely great to have a "Seattle fix" post the LA Binge. Are you coming out to Clayton's on Friday??? If not, please have a safe trip back to Seattle. (I didn't make it to the Firehouse tonight due to feeling under the weather.) |
| |
Thanks everyone for the dances and general friendliness this past week! The Firehouse especially was a great time. That was probably the best jam dance I've had... Amy, I missed you at the Firehouse, and I'm certain I'd have asked you to dance soon enough, regardless of my self publicization. Dennis, I'm thinking its probably just the dancing to sleep ratio catching up to me. Now I'm going to plug the Seattle Lindy Exchange tentatively scheduled for August 15-18 (dates will probably be finalized tomorrow). There are just a ton of really fun dancers (and great people) in our scene up here, so it will be well worth coming to. Plus, I'll probably be back in San Diego sometime in May or June when my boat decides to pull in or drop me off for a few days. Thanks again! -Titus |
