Thanks everyone for coming out last night. Here's the results of the contest. Thanks especially to our judges Andrew, Jim, and Susan, for making the hard decision for us, and to the audience for creating lots of energy and acting as the 4th judge.

The contestants were:

Couple 1 -- Brian and Amy
Couple 2 -- Steve and Jenn
Couple 3 -- Matt and Deidra
Couple 4 -- Mike and Liz

And the winners were . . .

Couple #1
Brian and Amy!

They won tickets to next week's show with Chicago Six, as well as 2 cool swing CDs. We'll be having more contests in the future. Entry will be free, and we'll be giving away cool prizes for each one. Stay tuned and don't miss out on the next one!

I especially loved the "Quick Stop", uh, I mean "Flop" at the end!
You guys even made "falling to the floor" look good and timed to
the music.

The Freemonts website makes them look like a cool blues band, but is there a place (in San Diego) to actually get some swing music?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Tearshedding (Tearshedding) on Monday, June 23, 2003 - 11:15 am: Edit

HAHAHAHAHA... Chance, you're really starting to amuse me. You "almost" sound like some of the rest of us. Where's the swing music... are you trying to incite a riot?

I just wanted to say that the Aubergine is an increadable venue. As an out of towner, from SF, I have never seen a nice, club looking venue, with a nicely finished floor, and with a band stocked full of talented musicians, all for $8! That's a phenominal deal right there. Just hope you all appreciate what you have, and give Mishi (spelling?) credit for putting together such a great venue.
I had fun dancing with you all, thanks for showing me a great time,
Henry

Yea, the website is nice - they look like cool guys. I wonder if they can play something other than the blues.

I must say that I had a blast last night! Great band (okay, some of the songs could have been shorter - I nearly died on a couple of the fast ones) and oh-so-many leads! I was a happy sweaty mess by the end of the evening. A couple of good leads have come out of the woodwork lately. You guys gotta come out more! Please! And I hope you visit us again, Henry, Paul and good old Tim, of course. I love our local leads but we just don't seem to have enough of them lately.
P.S. I love the blues - pffffth! We don't have to have a swing band every single week in my opinion! Jeremy did a nice job of balancing things out with his dj-ing last night.

Yeah, I guess I just missed Hal's Angels cause I was in Harlem. HJDF kinda put me in the mood for straight swing and it's been all blues since I got back.

Meeshi: What's the week after The Freemonts?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 02:52 pm: Edit

Hey Chance, where was this enthusiasm when we were trying to infuse more "straight swing" at the Firehouse a few months ago, huh?! :)

You know, it's not that easy to find a "straight swing" band to play at the Aubergine every week. We already had two this month (10th Ave. Jazz Band and Hal's Angels). It's too bad you missed Hal's Angels, 'cause they would have satisfied your recent craving for swing music, but like Laurel said, "we don't need to have a swing band every single week." Jeremy does balance out the music quite well.

As for the Fremonts, I know it's not classic swing, but they are a great band that plays great juke joint jump blues music (Voted Best in San Diego by the Reader), and you've got to appreciate their unique musical offerings for what they are.

get chicago six again :)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff (Jeff) on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 07:15 pm: Edit

The Fremonts are fun. Many a defector, (including myself), has bailed
on Cafe Savoy on a Friday night to hear them play live at the Whistle Stop.

I think the different flavored bands Meeshi's bringing in, while of necessity,
due to the lack of actual swing bands in SD, may be a stroke of genius as well.
These bands are bringing in their following, and are getting a taste of our
Sunday night venue. They're seeing us dance, and hearing swing at the breaks.
They're being exposed to our scene, and otherwise may not have.

Also, all the non-swing bands may help us loosen up, and get us out of our
swing snobbery a bit as well; ya know, like when you go into a bar and are happy
to dance to anything that remotely swings, and have a blast. We're just not as critical
of bands that obviously aren't playing swing music, but we give the ones that try hell.

What got me Lindy Hoppin'? I saw ONE couple, and it was over. I was hooked.
I had to learn it and began the next day.

Now now Laurel, I think we do need swing bands every week. ;)

But more to the point, who is this person pretending to be Chance?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff (Jeff) on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 09:12 am: Edit

And in my opinion, we've heard NO blues lately at the
Aubergine from any of the bands.

But we will this Sunday!!!! Can't wait!!! I love blues.
Fast and slow. When it's reeeeeeeaally good, that is.

How was the blues band? I was planning on attending, but...

Who's going to David P this Sunday at the Aubergine?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Yedancer (Yedancer) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 02:28 pm: Edit

For a blues band, they were awesome. I had a lot of fun just sitting and watching them.

UPDATE TO BAND SCHEDULE: For everyone who's been clammering for REAL swing music at the Aubergine, you had better be in town on July 13th. By a cosmic coincidence, Hal Smith is available, and will be getting some musicians together to play for us. It will not be Hal's Angels, but will include Carl Sonny Leyland and other awesome local musicians. MARK YOUR CALENDARS. Get ready to bust out to live swing music!!!
