who's Krista? |

you never fail to surprise me with your maturity. if there's a good dj in SD, I though it'd be nice to know who. |

Last night was awesome...one of my best nights dancing in San Diego ever! Thanks for all of the great dances guys! |
| |
Brian, of "Brian and Julie". They moved here recently from...eh, I forgot. Anyway, they are excellent dancers socially, who look amazing together. They'd easily grace the cover of any fashion magazine. Beautiful people in every way. Brian played lots of great stuff last night. He fit right into to the Firehouse "groove". What was that one song he played that blended 3 different artists in one song. Very cool. I agree with you, Laurel. I'd love to have him spin at LBtB as well. |
| |
Carli you're so fun! I love dancing with you. |
| |
They moved here from Santa Cruz |
| |
right on. |
| |
Awww thanks Jeff. I'm going to miss all of our awesome leads when i leave. Only 3 more weeks of san diego dancing for me =( |
| |
Don't forget Firehouse starts at 9pm now. People are coming earlier, so you should to, or you'll miss out. Occasionally we used to go late, but that's less likely now that it starts earlier. So if you used to be fashionably late at 10:30pm, now you should come at 10pm. If you want to get every minute you can, come at 9pm. |

I'm djing again tonight at the Firehouse and I have this great new tune to play: "All About My Girl" by Jimmy McGriff. Its an instrumental, its about 165 BPM, and its got a cool repeating pattern with hits on 1 and 2 1/2 and some great breaks. Its also got the mother of all false endings! McGriff plays organ, and I don't like a lot of organ jazz, but this is a fun song with lots of energy, so it makes my cut. I heard it played by Mandy who was djing at Lindygroove a few weeks back, so I asked her what it was and the next day I found the CD on Amazon.com and I bought it. I was dancing with Debbie Gitt when I first heard it, so that may have biased me as to how good the song is, but I'll play it tonight and you guys can tell me if you like it too. I also have other great new tunes by Carmen McRae, Holly Cole, Lionel Hampton and others. See ya! |
| |
Good night last night! I got the most questions on songs I've ever gotten DJing. Apparently, I now play more groovy tunes than Meeshi--I'm "too groovy for Meeshi!" he says... |
| |
Thumbs up on the new tune, Ron! Thumbs down on the "Potato Chip" song - please retire it! (I'm just a posting critic these days, aren't I.) |
| |
Crunch crunch, I don't want no lunch.. |
| |
All I want is potato chips... |
| |
Noooo, now you're making me...beat...my head... against...the...wall!! (Come on, isn't anyone else tired of that song?) |
| |
potato chips...how my mouth does drip... |
| |
Hey, Ron, what I say to you at the Firehouse need not be posted for everyone on the Forum! No, I don't think your music is "too groovy," I just think that a lot of your DJing lately has too much of the same laidback, bluesy aesthetic. Don't get me wrong, I like it bluesy, but I also like some variety in orchestration, tempo, singing styles and musical genres. |
| |
Fair enough! I just think its interesting how my DJing has evolved over time, the bluesy/groovy side of my tastes kinda snuck up on me! Don't worry, I'll still be playing plenty of modern popswing and 50's R&B, vocal jazz and even big band. |

A little big band, a little balboa, please! -Hop "eine kleine nachtmusik" Michael |
| |
I am in agreement with Michael... the tide isa changin' |
| |
Hop "Amadeus" Michael, What about your Bop fix? Sean |
| |
Bop is good! But not necessarily for dancing. -Hop "Monk" Michael |
| |
mmmm.... Bop. ...and not the Hanson variety. Funny that you mention it. Diz spent much of his big-band career trying to encourage dancing to bop. There's plenty of be-bop that you can dance to. It's a shame that in the dance community be-bop is uniquely associated with Bird and Diz screaming at 300 bpm. |
| |
Ok, Ok, yes, you can dance to Be-bop, even some Hard Bop. But I think most beginners would find it much harder than straight swing. The odd rhythm changes makes it candy for the ears but hard on the feet. But if you and your partner can listen and stretch your mind and feet, oh, 'tis Heaven! -Hop "That Bird is making me Dizzy" Michael |

What style is T. Monk's "Straight No Chaser" considered to be? |
