Monk=be-bop However, he does draw quite heavily from his roots in stride piano. Stride piano has a um-pa bass in the left hand every alternate beat that mimics the Tuba (original bass) in New Orleans-style jazz (aka 'jass'). He's also more economical in his soloing than his contemporaries. |

Birthday Dance For ME!!!!! Okay, I'm going for my B-Day dance tomorrow night at Firehouse!! Please come out and help dance me into the floor!! |
| |
The calendar says I'm DJing this Thursday, but I wasn't planning on it, we shifted my every other week schedule a couple weeks back. I'll be there next week and I have some great new stuff to play. |
| |
Actually, cancel that. I will be DJing tonight after all. I will be featuring Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and Artie Shaw. Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye have some early stuff that's pretty swinging and danceable, and Artie Shaw is always great. I have some new (to me) hi-fi Artie Shaw to play. I don't know how many people actually make decisions to go/not go to the Firehouse based on who's Djing, but here's the info, just in case. Meeshi and I discussed the next couple months of DJing at the Firehouse, working around the holidays, and it works out to this: Nov 7 - Ron Nov 14 - Ron (Meeshi's birthday!) Nov 21 - Meeshi/others Nov 28 - Closed for Thanksgiving Dec 5 - Other Dec 12 - Ron Dec 19 - Meeshi/others Dec 26 - Closed for Christmas/Boxing Day Jan 2 - Ron And then back to the normal schedule of where I dj one week, and Meeshi/Jeremy/others dj on the next week and so on. -Ron |

| |
Don't expect it to be all that different. Besides I won't be there... so no one will kick you. |
| |
Yeah, it's not really that different. |
| |

| |

| |
How was it last nite? Chance, was it hard pleasing the crowds? Crowds, was it hard keeping Chance in line? |

I thought it was awesome! I finally got to see what DJs go through; props to them. ; ) It was a little hectic trying to figure out which songs to play in which order, but it was fun! This is my playlist and I think this is pretty close to having them in the order they were played, from what I remember. Campus Five - Down the Road a Piece Campus Five - Swingin' on Nothin' Ernestine Anderson - I Love Being Here with You Ernestine Anderson - Don't Get Around Much Anymore Jennie Lobel - He Ain't Got Rhythm Jennie Lobel - Moten Swing Louis Armstrong - On the Sunny Side of the Street Lavay Smith - Devil and the Deep Blue Sea B.B. King - Knock Me a Kiss Lucky Millinder - Shorty's Got to Go Lucky Millinder - Savoy Jimmy Witherspoon - Bad Bad Whiskey Jimmy Witherspoon - One Scotch One Burban One Beer King Cole Trio - Straighten Up and Fly Right Count Basie & Duke Ellington - Blues in Hoss' Flat Glenn Miller - Pennsylvania 6-5000 Duke Ellington - Take the "A" Train Louis Prima - Closer to the Bone Sam Butera & The Witnesses - French Poodle Count Basie - Smack Dab in the Middle Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra - Bli Blip Louis Armstrong - Mack the Knife some girl and some guy...Maybe Ruth Brown? - Fine Brown Frame Barbara Morrison - Stormy Monday It's short because I only DJed for an hour and a half. |
| |
good set! (its like a set I would play!) Sorry I missed it. The Fine Brown Frame version with two people singing was probably the Lou Rawls version. |
| |
Oy! I wanna DJ too. that'd be fun! |
| |
What do you mean "Oy!"? I forgot one song around 'Mac the Knife': Ella Fitzgerald & Chick Webb - Tain't What You Do |

As Meeshi noted in another thread, (and I hope I'm not misconstruing his position), he has determined that his experiment with the new music format the Firehouse has been a mistake. I will be back DJing every other week for the next couple months at least. I'm not sure how long I will be doing this. I've been getting a little burned out on it, and I have other distractions in my life now. I do enjoy djing. Sometimes I get really excited and can't wait to play all the fun new tunes I've found. Its a blast when a room full of people are dancing to the tunes you spin. On the flip side, I spend far too much time and money listening to music and picking out songs, and I don't enjoy it when I periodically get attacked for the djing choices I make. I don't like the barriers it sometimes raises between me and other dancers. But its been gratifying having people (and not just my close friends) come up to me over these past weeks and say how much they enjoy my djing and wish I'd come back to the Firehouse. Thanks! I was pretty skeptical about Meeshi's experiment with more classic swing at the Firehouse, but it is his club and his choice. One of Meeshi's many strengths is his creativity--he's always coming up with new ideas for special events, new clubs and creative routines, and the San Diego swing scene is the better for it. He puts enormous energy into all this, and he does it day after day, week after week. But I'm happy this experiment is over, or at least, modified. Thank you for your support, and I hope to see you this Thursday! My near-term schedule: Thursday, April 17th at the Firehouse, Thursday, April 24th at Lindygroove in Pasadena Thursday, May 1st at the Firehouse. |

Incidentally, going forward, I don't plan on making any major changes to my style, but as always, I try to adjust to the crowd. I don't like seeing people sit down, so I always try play at least some tunes to get people dancing. As a Lindyhop DJ, I think I already play a pretty diverse mix of danceable swing songs. I can and will try to play a few more classic swing songs and/or faster songs, but frankly, that isn't my interest or my strength as a DJ. I'm not a classic swing DJ. But I've also never been a total "groove" DJ, as contrasted with many DJs from other cities, because I've always thought song after song of piano jazz etc. is kinda boring. But I've definitely moved towards more groovy music over the past couple of years as I've found more artists and songs I've liked, and as my tastes have changed. In general, my dj style is to play songs in all genres, but dominated by jazz and blues vocals. What can I say, I like songs with lyrics! I also play piano jazz, and 50's and modern jazz. I also play some big band songs, but not many lower-fidelity 30's and 40's songs. I also play a lot of 50's R&B/jump blues and what I call modern pop swing songs. Musically, they aren't deep, but they are just plain fun. I play more slower songs than some other San Diego Djs, my sets average about 145 BPM. I like songs with breaks or patterns you can play with. I usually play songs with a swinging rhythm, so you won't find me playing 70's disco or heavy metal as a "dj challenge". But maybe an occasional hip-hop or funky song. I think beginners are the key to growing our scene, and I try to play songs that are beginner-friendly. I think songs with lyrics, slower songs, standards, jump blues and other pop swing songs fall into this category. Also songs that the rest of us used to love but are now sick of, because these are the same songs that beginners would still love to hear. So that's a summary of my dj style, for what its worth! |
| |
WOW! That's great news! I've missed Ron's DJing lately and am very happy that he will be back. Thanks, Meeshi, for your effort in introducing new music and styles to our scene. Keep on experimenting! I think it has made me a better dancer. BTW when are you going to have another jazz movement class? |

In my opinion, excessive repetition leads to stagnation, because most people get bored when they do the same thing over and over again (or listen to the same music over and over again). I believe that for a long time in San Diego faster music and late-20's and 30's jazz was not played enough in San Diego. I think that has changed. San Diego dancers seem more diverse now. At first glance, it might seem like Meeshi's experiment was a failure. But in the long run, I think it will benefit the scene. Some people may have decided not to support that new format. But those that did benefited themselves by becoming adequate if not proficient at dancing to a different kind of music. From now on, San Diego DJ's won't have to fear playing those fast songs, because they'll know that there's a least a small audience of people who like and/or tolerate it. Interestingly, the poll at Cafe Savoy.com shows that a sizeable group of people like the old stuff. Are all the "groovesters" not voting there or something? |
